CHRISTMAS QUIZ NIGHT

PHIL'S COMMENTS
The League held their annual Christmas social evening, quiz and raffle at the Heap Bridge Social Club. This year the quizmasters were the Rose and Crown Bury courtesy of Ian Openshaw and Peter Maguire they announced at the start that it would be a sort of “Ken Dodd type ” of quiz night and the never ending rounds proved them right and even then two rounds were discarded.
The hosts the Phoenix nights boys took a lead at the end of round two and were never headed although sneaky tactics from Neville in identifying league team members helped.
Halfway through the evening the proceedings were paused for the Raffle and a delicious hotpot supper provided by the hosts.
Top prize in the raffle, a DAB Radio, was won by Gordon Hubbert of the Swan and Railway B and the other numerous prizes including a signed copy of local author and the Rose Rammy’s Martin Baggoley’s book on Murder and Crime in Lancashire.
The prizes were well spread amongst the teams. The quiz continued although the Rose Starling A’s were depleted when the league treasurer had to sneak off to accompany the family to see Santa in Lapland preparing for the big day to come. The final outcome of the quiz in the wee early hours was a win for the team from host’s Heap Bridge and second place went to the Stopes Tavern. A good night was had by all and thanks were expressed to the Heap Bridge Social Club Stewards and committee and our league sponsors Bury Reprographics Ltd along with the quizmasters Ian and Peter for providing such a varied quiz. Yes there are only 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon, not 4, as the answer given on the night. Stopes had 3 as the answer, so it made no difference to the outcome (luckily).

Week 9 Monday Jan 7th The league action starts again on the seventh with some intriguing fixtures if they can escape the forecasted winter snow arriving. The first quiz after the festivities is notorious for being tough in previous years and Peter Taylor’s Rose and Crown Rammy have the Rose Bury visiting. If Ian’s Rose Bury are not suffering from post Santa stress the form book say’s it should be an away win but the Rose Rammy may just sneak this.
Rose Starling has the Swan B’s visiting and this could be match of the week, if the Swan team’s quiet progress is to continue they will have to upset last years champions. However the Rose Starling has been starting to score heavily prior to the break and they don’t want to drop any more matches. Close home win perhaps.
Stopes Tavern have the Packhorse Affetside skiing in probably, if the Packhorse are on form, an away win may ensue but the home side may be the better bet here, but it may be down to the last round.
League Leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club have the Phoenix lads visiting and there is a chance they may be caught cold after the break but the Cricketers will be too strong if form holds but it may be closer than expected.
The SunDial and Swan A have an extra week to recover as they are on free nights.
