PHIL'S COMMENTS
With the cold and frosty nights of autumn upon us,it heralds the start of the Bury quiz league to warm the mind, and in this first week it certainly achieved that. Two teams waiting until the very last question to gain a result. With no new teams approaching the league secretary the fixture list is a repeat of last years fixtures so reigning champions Rose and Crown Starling did not relish a starting visit to 3rd place Rose and Crown Bury. Helen Goldsbrough responded to a last minute call up due to the Postal dispute in Liverpool rendering the league secretary ineligible, the champions would have started with a player short and Helen proved crucial on the evening. The home side led by Ian Openshaw took the lead in the second round and the Rose Starling struggled to level the scores at the halfway point. With the home side hitting form in the fifth round to take maximum points the omens looked bleak for the champions with a six point deficit to overcome but with the scoring being very close and the Rose Bury not going with there correct 4 pointers and opting for two, the visitors clawed it back to leave a correct answer on the last question forcing a draw at 36 – 36. The Swan and Railway Radcliffe derby proved to be equally close with not more than 5 points in it throughout the match and Mavis’s magic potions benefiting both sides it came down to the last question before the Swan B’s overcome the Swan A’s with a 25-26 win. League Runners up Radcliffe Cricket Club played host to the Stopes Tavern, with Paul Gardners men hoping for a better start this season and looking at the scores, they got, it but still succumbed, to the annual title contending Phil Dodd’s Cricketers 47-31. Another side wanting a better start this year was the Packhorse Affetside who were visiting the famed Phoenix nights Heap Bridge Social Club who are a tough team to beat normally at home but Sue Pinder must have had the Pack lads in training during the summer break as they came away with an excellent win of 24-34. Game of the week this week though is the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom hosting the SunDial Walmersley road. With a slight communication mix-up meaning the visiting side not knowing the league was starting until the very last minute and a side quickly assembled overcoming Peter Taylor’s home side 28-32 in a closely fought match. Dave O’Briens SunDiallers earns the Team of the week accolade. Monday 29th October Next weeks matches provide some exiting prospects with the SunDial hosting an in form Radcliffe Cricket club, if Eunice controls the home side excitement this match could go very close and the home side will hope some of last years close results go their way this season. Stopes Tavern have the Rose and Crown Bury visiting and going on this weeks scores another closely fought affair is in prospect, the away side may just and only just squeeze it. Rose Starling have the improving Swan A side visiting and may have a point to prove after this weeks drawn match but they will have to play well. Swan B have the Phoenix nights lads visiting and another close match is on the cards, could go either way this one if both are on form. Match of the week is predicted to be PackHorse v Rose Rammy with the homeside starting well, the Rose side will have to hit form after the first weeks defeat to avoid a second one but if both play to form it will be nip and tuck.
