PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week 1 28th Sept With the indian summer now over and the monsoon season commencing (is it not the same thing ) we turn to thoughts of winter and and the quiz season on Monday nights . With a very welcome extra team this season, the first week of the league appeared to be a tough starter for a few teams and a mystery tour for two teams also. First game on the agenda was the Rammy Derby between the established Rose and Crown and we welcome the cricket club at Rammy. Peter Taylor had stated at the pre- season meeting that the Cricketers at Rammy were going to prove difficult opposition to beat and these words must have been ringing in his ears as on the night the teachers were beaten by the pupils. One reason for the defeat was put down to the horse racing questions but as stated by Peter it was tough but fair, final score Rose Rammy 33 Rammy Cricketers 34. The Swan and Railway Radcliffe hosted there own derby match and in a hard fought game the B’s had the rub of the green and glided away to a win scores on the doors A’S 33 B’S 43. Hairy Hounds visited the Phoenix nights and with regrets for missing the hairy hounds home beer festival they fought hard to acheive there first season opening win for 5 years mainly due to not playing Rose Starling as previous seasons have dictated and not talking themselves out of the correct answers. The welcome half time Guinness did’nt come with a shamrock rather like the first individual round answer apparently. With the phoenix nights struggling a little, the visitors ended the night with the second highest score. Final Tally Heap Bridge 37- Hare and Hounds 48. Sundial Walmersley road played hosts to the reigning champions Rose and Crown Starling and it was a tough opener for the home side. The beautiful new landlady read the questions (aint I a creep)and the home side of Barney , Anne, Helen and holiday bound Eunice had a tough opening two rounds losing them both to the visitors, but they hit back in round three to gain a point back. The visitors took the stick or twist round for a half time score of 15 -21. The second half saw the visitors of Kieran (Mikado / Evita) Goldsborough, Lee Sawbridge, Wally The legend Warrington and someone else who’s name escapes me, pulled away and dropped only a couple of questions in the half for a final score of 29-56. Final match of the week is the somewhat mystery tour undertaken by Stopes Tavern at The Radcliffe Cricket Club. Below is the report fron Paul, spot the error We, at Stopes know Summer is officially over when the Quiz League starts, and tonight the Taverners made the short trip to the traditional opening venue of Radcliffe Cricket Club. After much re-arranging of furniture & once wedged very cosily into a remote corner of the Club, the game commenced, with Phil Dodd opting to act as question master. Rd1 eased the Taverners into the proceedings with a mixture of Golf, Film, Fashion & Quotes, with both teams still very rusty, Stopes managed to finish the Rd with a 1 point advantage 7-6. Rd2 saw us falter badly, as only Harry Duttons 45 year career as a History Teacher finally reaped a correct answer on the subject matter of English Battlefields. Well done H, Taverners knew you would come good eventually!!! Unfortunately 3 blanks from Paul, Roger & Ian saw RCC pull out a 3 point lead at 10-13. It didn’t help when Paul Gardener ran through every uppercase symbol on the QWERTY numbers, recalling all except that squiggly little Caret above No6, I’m sure Paul gave his opposite number Ken the correct answer & this would prove a crucial 2 points which would come back to haunt him!***?? Stopes managed to maintain our rich form from Rd2 into Rd3 as we drew a total blank this time!!! Whales, obscure BBC2 programmes & Scottish Dishes as well as Japanese Aerials all leaving us bemused & now 9 points behind at 10-19, oh Bugger!!! Thankfully Stopes know there Pearls & a full house of 8 points had us willing the Cricketers to gamble on their 3rd question & thankfully (for us Taverners) they goofed out with a blank. Only 1 point difference at the half way point 18-19 & game on again. Greek Myth & Welsh Dogs caused us problems in Rd5 & Stopes fell behind further as we they lost out 4-7 & the Cricketers usual consistency showing no signs of cracking. The stick or twist Rd has the taverners again kicking there heels as they shared the points at 7 apiece, but not having the courage of their convictions and going for 4 points on the last question when they had Aida on the 1st part, would prove decisive at the end of the game. The 2nd Individual Rd would see the taverners claw back 2 points & lie 4 points behind as the final Rd beckoned. A good final round gaining 3 points on the Cricketers, frustratingly put Stopes within 1 point to finish 43-44 & ruing a couple of bloopers which would have sealed the points in a game they could & should have won. Spotted the difference yet? Investigations are under way into why there quiz was different from everyone elses and it isn’t John Heenan’s fault! Team of the week – Rammy Cricketers Match of the week- Radcliffe Cricketers v Stopes Taverners. Week 2 Monday 5th OCT The Rammy Cricketers host Swan A and if the a’s are on form this may be a tough home debut but the opening nights result may mean a tough trip for the visitors. An Away win but only just perhaps. Swan B’s host the Radcliffe Cricketers in the derby of the week and with the correct questions this will be a hard fought match and I will be controversial here, but I am tipping a close home win. Stopes host the Sundial and this may also prove to be an upset as the visitors would have scored more points with a few split decisions going against them in there last match. A home win but only just.(is it new year yet!) Rose Starling host the Phoenix nights another tough match but the home side may just take the points but it will be very close. Hairy Hounds host the Pack Horse in there first match and this may be the telling point but if plenty of drinks breaks ensue they could overcome the in form home side but a home win predicted. Peter Taylors cats at the Rose Rammy are curled up this week. A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side.
