PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week 10 Jan14th In this final week of the first half of the league, the two top team’s runaway leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club and trailing Rose and Crown Starling had no match. The remaining sides had a chance to catch up and close the gap for league honours. Top match this week was at the Stopes Tavern where Swan and Railway B’s were the visitors in a close affair in all rounds the Swans just gained the advantage but it came down to the last question where a slip up would give Paul Gardner’s Stopes side a chance for a draw, Alec’s Swan’s are a determined side this season and they stood firm to answer correctly and complete a 39 – 42 point win. Rose and Crown Bury hosted Heap Bridge Social Club and the visiting Phoenix lads, the only side to take a point off the runaway league leaders, must have been hoping to continue the form of last week. However with both sides looking at the runner’s up spot it was always going to be a closely fought affair both teams went for wrong answers in close decisions throughout the match but long term employee Peter Maguire managed to answer correctly a question on his bank employers and John Connell came in useful with his knowledge of soaps, not Corrie or Eastenders or Emmerdale but Palmolive. All this resulted Ian Openshaw’s Rose team slipping in with a 43-35 point win. Rose and Crown Ramsbottom were visiting Swan and Railway Radcliffe A’s and in another excellent competitive match. Where John Heenan for the Swan’s excuses were “more dodgy decisions that Rob Styles gave in the premiership last Saturday and they were still hung over from the match” succumbed to Peter Taylor’s Rose side, are they starting to purr again? Time will tell. The score 35-43. The SunDial Walmersley road had the PackHorse Affetside visiting and with Mike Pinder back in harness again the Pack horse were too strong for the home side. Team of the week PackHorse Affetside the score 30-46. Week 11 Monday Jan 21 rst With the half way point reached the league is back to a full fixture list for the first of the return matches. In week one the SunDial caught Peter Taylor’s side cold and came away with a win but for the return visit a fully warmed Rose Rammy side may gain revenge but they will have to be fully cosy and purring to complete the win in a predicted close competitive game. Stopes Tavern host leaders Radcliffe Cricket club in the first of the Radcliffe derby’s, with the Cricketer’s dropping a point in there last match, Paul’s Taverners may be in for a bit of a backlash but a week off may have unsettled the Cricketer’s again could be close again but the form book say’s the Cricket Club. The second Radcliffe derby see the Swan B’s host the A’s, the first match saw a close contest but with the B’s in the hunt for honours this may prove a difficult game to repeat the contest. However if the B’s relax on home turf the A’s could surprise the form book. A home win is the likely result though. PackHorse Affetside have the Heap Bridge Phoenix Knight’s riding in and again the Packhorse secured a win in the first fixture but the Phoenix lads have been on tour for three weeks now and have had mixed fortunes, a draw and a loss in tough matches this one could complete the set for a revenge win but the PackHorse will make it very tough on last weeks results and this one may be very close in the end. Either way win? Game of the week is the visit of Rose Bury to Rose Starling in the first half, on the last question a draw ensued, in what is always a tough fixture for the hosts the Rose Starling will have to be on top form to gain a result anything less and the Rose Bury will jump all over them and not look back. Another draw would not be out of the question either.
