PHIL'S COMMENTS

On a cold and full moon night, the first sighting this year of that rare creature the mottled gritter wagon was spotted outside the Stopes Tavern venue. The eight quiz league sides playing this weeks league matches relaxed in cosy venues but readied them for a set of tense games, with all scores being very similar yet again.
Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village hosted a local derby against the Hare and Hounds from down by the brook as Yosemite Sam reports:-
On the penultimate Monday of November, the Hare and Hounds Looney Tunes made the short journey up the road to the Shoulder of Mutton, the league’s newcomers this season. Hairy Hounds elected to go first, Captain Yogi Bear had left his “coonskin” coat on the table which meant both teams failed on their own first questions however the Shoulder picked up the bonus and so led at the end of Round One 7-6.
In the individual round two, Yogi failed to recognise Daffy Duck sat next to him, so the Shoulder picked up a second bonus. Yogi was then a porky short of a full pig in an attempt to snatch a bonus back on the reciprocal question, however Boo-Boo collected all the spring flowers so the visiting Hair Bear bunch took the round 5-7. In the third round the Hairy Hounds missed out on the free lunch(no pic-a-nic baskets for them then), but the Shoulder faired much worse and the Hairy Hounds won the round 2-6. Stick round 4 saw both teams stick on four, so the half time score was Shoulder of Mutton 18 Hare and Hounds 23.
Round five saw the Hounds make a dash for the finish line by taking the round 2-9. The two part round six had the Mutton men going for broke and it paid off on the first two as they picked up two maximum fours, but then they crashed and burned on the third when attempting a further maximum however there endeavours earned them a round win 10-7, and totals of 30-39. In the second individual round seven Boo-Boo cleaned up on the Comical identities. Yosemite Sam, the luddite, missed out on the cookies which would have been readily snapped up by Boo-Boo or Yogi (well he is smarter than the average…) the final score in the round was a good seven each though. Final round saw the home team score well but not enough to claw back the match, as the Shoulder won the round 6-4 in a match where both teams had won three rounds and drawn two in a closely fought contest. Final score Shoulder of Mutton 43 Hare and Hounds 50. The Looney tunes took the beer leg and then wandered off back down the road having enjoyed a lovely supper. Maureen the Quiz mistress did an excellent job and the Hairy Hounds thoroughly enjoyed the evening against a new and friendly crew.
Match of the week this week took place at St. Mary’s Radcliffe B’s who had the SunDial Walmersley Rd visiting. With Helen back on form she had the Harem on top form as the match went down to the final round of questions St. Mary’s came out second best by just a point 45-46. Team of the week also went to the SunDial and Helen’s Harem.
The Rose and Crown Ramsbottom hosted this weeks Rammy Derby against the Cricket Club and Peter Taylor says the Cricket club played well in another tight contest but the Tiger’s came out second best and went down to a 43-48 defeat.
Final league match this week was the visit of League leaders Rose and Crown Starling to the home of the Elves at Stopes Tavern.
The visitors elected to go first and Someone else picked up Justin Fashanu, both the Elves and the Rose were stumped by those pesky Racoon coats and the actor Fess Parker’s coonhat was left on the stand also, all other questions went to each of the teams to give a first round total of six each. Round two the first individuals saw the cartoon characters Daffy Duck and Porky pig sneak past both sides and the Fraser river flowed by someone else but the Elves Bert picked up the bonus and scored with his own Commonwealth river, both sides scored on the other categories of Spring Flowers and Pop Divorces for a round score of 7-4 and the Elves take the lead with a total of 13-10. Round three saw the Rose take a full house and a bonus U.S. economist Freidman but the Elves also dropped Graeme Dott and the western Wagon train (which no-one got after 6 more guesses either). This gave a round score of a disastrous two for the Elves and nine for the visitors. Round four Stink or twist on a theme of Nationalities saw the Rose pick up Spanish Fly courtesy of Terry, The French Lieutenants Women and Swiss army Knife courtesy of Jayne but then blow out with a guessed final answer of an artist material of Prussian Blue instead of the correct, not to be sniffed at, China White courtesy of Kieran, Terry and Jayne but not this week by someone else who was back to his normal innocent self. The Elves scored confidently with the Maltese Falcon and Mexican Wave but they were burnt by the Greek Fire and stuck on two for a round score of 2-0 and for a halfway total of 17-19.
The second half saw the Elves of Paul Gardner, Tim Green, Bert Bullough and Ian Brealey half and drop the “pieces of eight” in the first round five question, which was quickly pocketed by the Rose for a bonus but also drop the “Almost Famous” Oscar question as well which wasn’t picked up, the visitors then picked up a full house to increase there lead to 21-28. Round six two part questions saw safe two pointers be the theme, until the final questions when the Elves miss their Hansom Cab, hailed for a bonus by the visitors and the Rose miss their own joy riding Phaeton which wasn’t picked by the Elves. Round score 7-6. Round Seven individuals with categories of Comical Identities, Fish and Chips, Computer Terms and U.S. amendments troubled neither side and a maximum full house was duly scored to give totals of 35-43 going into the last round. Both teams again scored a maximum full house to give a final total of 43-51 and another contest that was a lot closer than the scoreboard suggests. The beer leg was won by the visitors and would have been a full house also except for the incorrect answer on the sheet of Brigadier instead of the correct Lieutenant- Colonel for the rank between Major and Colonel in the Army. Bert cleaned up with the tie break question challenge for the Elves and a delicious Steaming Hot pot with all the trimmings (especially the mushy peas by Tim) provided by the Superb landlady and was heartily consumed by all. Thanks go to Anne Thompson who stepped in to read the questions and to Bob for the scores.
A competitive match free night was enjoyed by Heap Bridge Phoenix knights, PackHorse Affetside, Radcliffe Cricket Club and St. Mary’s A’s.
All teams are reminded that with the xmas quiz get together at Rose and Crown Rammy hosted by the PackHorse looming large, ideas for Raffle prizes / main Raffle prize are welcome.

Week 11 29-11-2010
Another week with just four games in the fixture list and all the games are again potentially match of the week.
First game has the Stopes Tavern Elves visiting Heap Bridge Social Club and the Phoenix Knights. If both teams play at the top of there form this will be a cracker, and high scoring. I can see nothing to suggest otherwise and a draw could be the outcome but I suspect as there seasonal form begins to kick in, the Elves may just load there sleigh this week by only a point.
Hairy Hounds host the Packhorse this week and the PackHorse have been showing a return to good form of late, with both teams knowing each other so well the match is set to be closely fought, however the Hounds may just have the sharper edge to their play and win in the final round by not many…
Ramsbottom Cricketers host St. Mary’s OscArs this week and with last weeks local derby win fresh in the mind it may look as though they could triumph again but the OscArs have played well in most matches but just run out of Steam at the final two rounds. If they can sum up the stamina to last, a win would not be a surprise but the home team may just take this.
Final league match this week could be another sparkler as the current champions Radcliffe Cricketers visit St. Mary’s B in this weeks Radcliffe Derby. The hosts were narrowly defeated last week and if they run to form, a win is on the cards for this week but the Champions have to win to have any chance of retaining or challenging for the title this season so the match will be tense and close. A draw is on the cards but maybe the hosts can run out very narrow winners, on perhaps the final question.
Four more teams have free weeks this week to practise, perhaps in friendlies. Rose Rammy will be decorating the Christmas venue, Shoulder of Mutton will be undertaking minted practise. SunDial will be dancing and Rose Starling will be nervous.
