PHIL'S COMMENTS

The Tenth week of the season saw the dark and dank autumn atmosphere cooling down but the competition inside the venue’s were hotting up with some very close and fair contests that had all teams struggling for answers throughout.
First match to report in took place at the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom that had the PackHorse Affetside visiting in the hilltop derby, and the host Tigers struggled for points all night, the PackHorse took charge of the match to keep there season on track for possible honours with a 17-39 score.
Second Match saw Paul Gardner’s Stopes Tavern Elves visit the all conquering Phil Dodd’s Radcliffe Cricket Club, with the visitors on top form they ran the current champions close and had them worried, in the top scoring match on the night, but still ended up “Bridesmaids” again with a 39-47 final score.
Third match had the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village host the SunDial Walmersley Rd and Helen’s Harem, with both teams playing well on the night the score at the end of round six was 26-25 but the Harem had a complete blank in round seven and the Shoulder took advantage by racking up nine points, with the final round going 4-2 to the hosts also, it resulted in a 39-27 score at the end.
Week ten saw the Heap Bridge Social Club at home face the bowling of Ramsbottom Cricket Club and in a tough week of scoring, it appears the tough got going, as the Phoenix Knights opened their account for the season at long last, when they took a very close match with a score of 34-30, team of the week Heap Bridge Social Club.
Final match this week had the Rose and Crown Starling host Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook with two reports for this match Yosemite Sam first:-
Week ten and the Hairy Hounds arrived in Starling to do BATL* with the Rose and Crown. It was a close run affair with both teams gaining four bonuses, two rounds being tied and the scores being level after rounds One, Three, Four and Six. Individual Rounds Scored 7-2 and 2-7.Rounds three and Eight were the crucial ones. Hairy Hounds won round Three 0-5.
Round Eight went 5-2 to the Rose Starling but it was the crucial two points that the Hairy Hounds scored on the first question in that round that separated the teams. It was a night for super heroes and Captain Bloody Marvellous was a revolution and the only Hound to score in both individual rounds. Captain Cannon kept his cool and his refinement by answering Sphere’s not Balls. The Hairy Hounds Captain, Velodrome Chief and Tour de France Fanatic, captained America, when he should have gone down under, on his first individuals. However the Hairy Hounds despite this, managed to scrape a 33-35 win. Rose Starling (Bob, Lee, Terry and Anne), took the beer leg 17-15 and the Mighty Cannon took the tie break pennies.
Some else has also filed a report and it follows:
Hare and Hounds elected to go first, a surprise to the Question Master considering recent matches. Round one started with both teams gaining points on the first questions but the Hounds missed Italy’s largest region on question 2 and so did the bonus Rose, with the Rose then failing on W. Whitelaw’s successor in the Thatcher government, the Hounds missed there own bonus chance. Third Questions saw the Hounds score on there own and then snap up a bonus when the Rose failed to get the capital city containing Syntagma Square. The Hairy Hounds missed J. Major’s deputy P.M. from 95 to 97 and the Rose snapped up a bonus Heseltine. With the Rose scoring on the last question the Round was tied 5-5.
The Second round individuals had categories of Tour De France, Chemical Elements, British Inventors and Cockney Rhyming Slang. Both sides quickly decided on individual selection and the Hairy Hounds Captain Peter Maguire answered immediately the question was finished but slipped up with the nationality of Cadel Evans, the Rose’s own Tour De France expert and fanatical cyclist Lee snapped up the bonus along with his own question. Chemical elements saw the Hound’s slip up again when the element from the Latin word Stibium passed them by and it also passed the Roses Anne by also to miss a bonus, but Anne then snapped up her own element to increase home advantage in this round. Inventors saw the Hairy Hounds finally trouble the scorer, when Dave “Superstar” Wright answered after much thought and without definitive confidence correctly. The Rose’s Terry missed the inventor of the World Wide Web and it went begging as a bonus. Final questions saw the Hounds lose the chase for the full version of “Rabbit”, and the Rose couldn’t snare a bonus either but Bob managed to grab his own Crockery to score with “China plate”. Round score 7-2 for totals of 12-7.
Round three saw the host Rose side score a complete blank although having two correct answers on the pads, the Hairy Hounds couldn’t take full advantage but Ian scored on Georgie Fames band and the Hounds then snapped up Peter Kay and managed a bonus Macintyre for a round score of 0-5 to level the match. Round four Stink or Twist lived up to its name again, with a theme of Once in a blue “Moon” first question saw the Hounds snap up Keith Moon’s band but then having to stick as the Greek equivalent of the Roman goddess Luna passed them by (and everyone in the room to be fair). The Rose managed via Anne to grab the Eastenders appearance of David Essex for one but then come to a halt themselves, as the county inhabitants with a nickname of “Moonrakers” could not be smuggled by. Round score 1-1, for magnificent halfway totals of Rose and Crown 13 Hare and Hounds 13.
Round 5 Opened up with an incorrect answer from the Rose and the Hounds missed the bonus when Constantine of Greece went sailing away. The Hairy Hounds then missed there own, when the shortform novel “The Fireman” by Bradbury wasn’t recognised but the Rose flashed up the bonus point. In this round the Hogarth Painting’s weren’t recognised at all so questions 2 for the Rose and 4 for the Hounds made no Marriage or progress on the scoreboard. With all other questions successfully negotiated, the Round score was 5-4 and the Rose had a one point overall lead.
Round Six, the two part questions, saw the Rose go for a safe two with Gladstone and the Hounds Superstar managed to work out the nickname of Paraguay also for a nervous two. The Rose then failed to recognise the fourth largest state of America and Montana was snapped up for a bonus by the Superstar again, the Hounds then went safe with Barry Hines for two on there own. Third questions saw the Rose go safe for two with Uruguay, but the Politician nicknamed “Lord Cupid” missed both the Hounds and everyone’s heart. Both of the fourth questions went for four points with the Superstar playing a blinder again on U.S. States. With a round score of 8-9 the scores were level again at 26-26.
Round Seven Individual’s once again had Categories of Revolutions, Superhero’s, Places of Worship and Geometric Shapes with the Rose having a disaster this round with only Anne scoring on places of worship, the Hounds team of Peter “Capitan” Maguire, Ian “Yosemite Sam”, “the Superstar” , John “the mighty” Cannon, (and cub reporter/ supporter Minnie Mouse), missed out only on places of worship but picked up a bonus Louis XVI, for a round score of 2-7 and regained the lead with an advantage of five points going into the final round.
Round eight started with the Rose failing and the Hairy Hounds missing the bonus when the name of the first particle Accelerator flashed by both teams. The Hounds started there own questions confidently with the ingredient of spaghetti sauce but that proved to be the only points scored by the Hounds in the round. The Rose team of Bob, Lee, Anne and Terry scored on the next three questions to pull the lead back to just two points with three questions remaining and a possible four points on offer but the scorer wasn’t troubled again as the bonuses of Cloud Chamber and Ladybird Spider went begging, but crucially the composer Rip the corset off, went unmolested by the Rose.
Round score 5-2 for totals of Rose and Crown Starling 33 Hare and Hounds 35. Match of the week award.
With the beer leg proving as perplexing as the main quiz, the Rose managed to grab the spoils, then lose the tie break riches to a close forty years away.
The enigma St. Mary’s B’s Radcliffe had a week off.

Week 11 21-11-11
Week eleven has a full fixture list and has the end of the first half of the season for most teams, with another week of close matches expected.
Match one has Rose and Crown Starling visiting the home of the enigma that is St. Mary’s B’s with the visitors losing two in a row by narrow margins they will want to get back to winning again but the enigma are just that, almost impossible to say what will turn up, the high free scoring potential league winners or the complete opposite. However a home win has to be the prediction.
Match two has the Hare and Hounds hosting the Heap Bridge Social Club, with both teams winning last week this match has to be close but the hosts may just have enough but only by a point……
In the battle of the Cricket Clubs, All conquering, High scoring, top of the league and current champions Radcliffe visit Ramsbottom, if the questions turn out to be as tough as last week then the hosts may have a good chance of a win, but the visitors may just be too strong in the second half, close match but away win.
Stopes Tavern host the Shoulder of Mutton and both teams are showing good form recently and this could be match of the week with neither side giving an inch. Possible draw but either side could just take it by a point…..
Final match has the SunDial host Rose and Crown Ramsbottom and this match also has the potential to be match of the week, the Harem though are playing well and the Rose Rammy Tigers after last weeks score must bounce back, home win but a close match.
The PackHorse are having a week off, and Sue will have them on a diet of encyclopaedia.
The Christmas function is looming and ideas for Raffle first prizes are required from teams.
New Players are wanted to strengthen teams contact the league secretary.
