Week 11 Jan21
This is the first week of the return league fixtures and all teams were in action, league leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club travelled the short distance to local rivals Stopes Tavern who have been having a mixed season of late. The Cricketers dropped there first point of the season in their last match, and it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that another upset could have happened but it was not to be as Phil Dodd’s team took charge of the match and ended Paul Gardners Taverners hopes with a 41-57 score line.
Second Radcliffe Derby was at the Swan and Railway where the B’s were at home to the A’s. Alec Fontaine has the B’s making a steady improvement this season where as the A’s have been very competitive while not getting the rub of the Green but in this match the B’s fired there highest score of the season to run away with the match 61-36. The only good thing on the night for the Red A’S was Liverpool’s draw.
Match of the Day occurred at Rose and Crown Starling who had Rose and Crown Bury visiting. In what is always a very tough match where over the years results have gone either way and in the first half a draw resulted the rounds in the first half were shared one each and a draw but the stick or twist round resulted in a full house for Starling while the Rose Bury team of Peter Maguire, Ian Openshaw, Dave Wright and Andy Ainsworth faltered and stuck at four points halfway score was 26-22. In the second half Rose Bury pulled back half the difference in round Five but lost it again in the four or two point round when both teams erred on the side of caution but the home side took a four pointer.
The individual round saw the legend Wally Warrington falter for the second time in the match but a bonus point gained on religious apparitions levelled the round. The final roundsaw the home side increase there lead by another point to win 55-50. Kieran Goldsbrough’s knowledge of Tarzan came in handy but John Steinbeck’s miss earned a gripe of wrath from his wife Helen. Anne Thompson also made an invaluable contribution for the home side.
In another tight match at the PackHorse the visiting Heap Bridge Social Club had a titanic battle that was nip and tuck but finally succumbed in a close 55-50 win for the Pack horse.
Team of the week this week is the SunDial who came out on top against a stuttering Rose Rammy, in a tight contest the Sun Dial completed the double over Peter Taylor’s side who now must count the SunDial as there bogie side, the score a very close 53-49
Very good scoring and very competitive matches all round this week.
Week 12 Monday Jan 28th
The matches this week look to be very close in 3 games but there may be a deluge of points for the two leading teams in the other two matches. Match of the week is Heap Bridge Social club at home to Swan B’s, this is very hard to predict the Phoenix lads are at home for the first time in a month and the B’s are hitting form but maybe , just maybe this is a fixture that they may come unstuck on. Home win just or a draw possibly.
Rose Bury host Stopes Tavern with a mauling by the the top team last week, Stopes have another difficult fixture against a side who just lost against the second place team, on paper this looks Rose Bury but Paul will want his Taverner’s to bounce back,
so it may not be that straight forward for the home side. A close home win is just on the cards though.
Rose Rammy have the PackHorse galloping up the hill, if both sides are at full strength this is going down to the wire and just missed being top match. The Pack Horse team have hit form somewhat of late and the Rose have been hit or miss. If the Rose is blooming a home win but probably a Pack Horse win but only just.
The leaders Cricketers have the SunDial visiting to bat but the form book says Cricketers by a margin. The Sun Dial have excellent potential but somewhat miss the goal, on the night and on form they could give the home side a worrying time but the Cricketers are focused on the title.
The Swan A’s have Rose Starling visiting with the Rose now hitting form after there early season mishaps the Swan A’s will have to be full of Mavis’s strongest tonic to run them close but you never know, if Julie and Louise hit form and the John’s can agree then a surprise is never out of the question but away win likely.
Recently the Rose Starling played a friendly at Bridge Inn Dumers Lane an enjoyable evening was had by all parties which resulted in a win for the Rose Starling.
All league sides have been invited to take part in a Quiz in aid of The Samaritans on Saturday 9th February all team captains have the details and at least one team has expressed an interest in entering a team, tentative interest has come from other local leagues also. £5 and a supper.
A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side. Contact details along with the league tables are on the website at www.buryquizleague.co.uk
