PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week11Monday 8th Dec
The First medium snowfall of winter occurring during the last week, luckily did not cause any disruption to this weeks fixtures as the council had woken up and sorted the roads out by today.
Match of the week, team of the week.
Would the ever faltering season of the Stopes Taverners continue against the seemingly un-stoppable Cricket Club?? In this closest of local Derby’s could Stopes yet again hit the “Self-destruct button” & start the second half of the season rooted firmly in bottom spot??
After a bright opening round, Stopes’ early 5 point lead was slowly eroded & at half time RCC held a 1 point advantage at 24-23.
Stopes fell further behind in Rd5 & with their last win now a distant memory, surely they were yet again staring down the Barrel of a Gun?? Caution was the name of the game in the 2 part question round & Stopes clawed 2 valuable points back. With solid scoring in the 2nd individual Rd, Stopes could see a chink in the so-far unblemished Armour of the Cricketers & with honours even at 41-41 the last round would prove to be a nail-biter.
The Stopes team of Harry Dutton, Roger Bolt, Tim Green & Paul Gardner held their nerve after drawing a blank on the 1st question & with the help of Dr Roger Bolt’s Cardio-vascular medical knowledge (he watches CSI) Stopes ran out 48-45 winners for a famous victory against this seasons run-away leaders. Thanks Paul and Well done to the Taverners.
SunDial Walmersley Road had the Rose and Crown Rammy visiting and after last weeks maiden win it was back to just managing to lose as the Rose Rammy slalomed to a win 29-38.
A game that was hard fought saw the Packhorse Affetside host the Heap Bridge Social Club lads, the Phoenix knights have been flying for most of the season so far but have just started to falter, while Sue Pinder’s Packhorse team are trying to get back on track after a few faltering games, with neither side running away with the match, the home side managed to grab the points with a 43-37 scoreline.
The Swan and Railway Radcliffe Derby saw Mavis’s tonic favour the B’s this time, as they took revenge for the first game loss to the A’s by running away with the match 51-31.
Final Game this week was the Rose and Crown derby at Starling who were playing Bury in a match that was much closer until the last few rounds than the scoreline suggests! Ian’s Rose Bury team of Peter Maguire, Andy Ainsworth, Dave (Shy Boy ) Wright and Ian Openshaw swapped rounds with the hosts in the first half and ended up with a to point lead at the half and increased that to seven points with a full house in round 5. But then with the home team looking nervous the visitors faltered and blanked the crucial four or two round and with question master Anne Thompson helping the visitors by not giving bonus points, the home side still managed to pull back the deficit and take a three point lead. Stirling work from the home sides Lee Sawbridge, Kieran Goldsbrough and even the legend Wally Warrington emerging from hibernation saw the home side give just one more bonus chance in the match whilst the visitors stumbled and scored just 6 points in the last two rounds to give a final score in an enjoyable match 50-36.
Week Monday 15th Dec
With the league now taking a festive break until the fifth of Jan, the teams will be gathering with crampons, ice axes and salopettes at the Rose and Crown Rammy for the Christmas get together and draw with our sponsors Bury Reprographics Ltd kindly donating our top prize, provisionally, a Sat Nav system.
Jan5th week 12
With the league recommencing following the break the league could be decided tonight in effect. The top match is the visit to Rose Starling of the Phoenix Knights, with the knights taking the honours in the first half and faltering before the break the “in form” Rose may be the favourites on paper but ... the break will have helped the visitors to regather. Close but a home win ...just!
Rose Rammy host Swan B another close match here and a draw could be on again but if the Swans fed well over the festivities they just may have the edge.
Leaders Radcliffe Cricketers host the Packhorse with close games all round this week this could be another but the visitors will have to be on top form to stop a home win.
Rose Bury Host the SunDial this will be an entertaining game and the home side, wherever they be, will be too strong for the visitors.
Swan A host the Radcliffe derby against the Taverners with tradition stating that this is the season start for the taverners they may be to strong for a perhaps hung-over home side.
