PHIL'S COMMENTS
|
The Transport to each venue might turn out to be paddle steamers shortly with all this wet and windy weather mind you with brussels the” in” vegatable this time of year the windy weather might help the inevitable odourful side effects disperse or blow it into Yorkshire at least. Mind you the Author maybe travelling to Scarborough at the weekend .... oh for calm weather. This weeks games are the last before the Christmas festivities and extremely competetive games they were to, first up was the predicted close game at Rose and Crown Ramsbottom where the Swan and Railway b could paddle all the way to the door it seemed and with both teams gearing up for top form this match was close all the way through to the last round, and the result a predicted single point win for the Swans with a score of 43-44 and a close contender for match of the week but not quite. Sun Dial had a very quick return fixture against the team they conquered last week Rammy Cricketers, perhaps it was playing in wet swimming costumes they wore to get to the venue however as in a close game Barney and the Harem were trailing the Cricketers early on, as the Cricketers bowled the maidens over to take there revenge and post a score of 40-48 good form shown by both teams. Stopes Tavern Christmas elves had the Packhorse Affetside visiting the workshop and the visitors have shown improved form of late but the elves have taken stock on there week off (where have they hidden it all!!) and have returned refreshed with Christmas spirit taking the match with a score of 47-40. Swan and Railway A’s had the Phoenix Knights of Heap Bridge visiting and after a close fought contest in which the Henry the eighth round had such an effect on the home side that the fall of an axe could haunt them forever too. The Phoenix Knights took hold of the match and ran out winners with a score of 44-48 after coming up from behind .....typical of those knights! Match of the week this week took place at the Rose and Crown Starling where the fading reigning champions hosted the unbeaten leaders Radcliffe Cricketers, whose players on the night were Phil Dodd, Tony Kaye, Colin Morgan and Ken Jones. Round one saw the home side take a full house and a four point lead when the visitors got spiked by the railway and missed a Flutey rugby question. Round two saw both teams struggle for points with only Jayne scoring for the home side with 3 points and the Cricketers took the round with 4 points. Round three had both teams take seven points apiece with the rose being passed a blazer and the cricketers being passed a duffy so to speak. Round four stick or twist round has so far this year been probably the toughest round all season for points scoring but the Cricketers scored an impressive eight points after an inspired guess after only an hour on the third Wilde answer, the home team of Kieran, Jayne , Lee and someone else stuck on four after an absolutely inspirational third answer, by I just can’t remember who...., of John WHITE the footballer ,sadly taken in his prime, whilst playing for a magnificent Spurs side who played REAL football instead of this namby pamby rubbish, Sorry went off at a tangent there. Anyway all this excitement meant the visitors had pulled back the score to lead by just a point 22-23 at the halfway stage. Round five saw the Rose score heavily to re-take the lead whilst the visitors had there first blank round of the season and losing out on a mickey mouse question too. Round Six is the four or two round with the Rose going first, this round sometimes proves crucial and today was no exception as the homeside played a safe two to defend the lead but this backfired when they knew the footballer was Bobby Moore on four but confirmed with the two points and the visitors took the gimme four with Peter Shilton. The Cricketers took a further four points with Barnardo’s and pulled back some off the deficit with twelve points to eight and a score of 39-35.Round seven individuals saw the home side drop a question, which was picked up as a bonus by the cricketers to win the round 9-6 and go into the final round just a single point behind 45-44. The home side then had a nightmare with the volkswagon wind questions (not enough christmas sprouts yet) but so did the Cricketers and the teams went to the last question a point apart still in the home teams favour but with a cricket question, yep, would you believe it the Cricketers snapped it up and took the match by one point 48-47. With the Cricket Club earning the team of the week accolade as remaining unbeaten and almost ..... yes almost ..... winning the title. Unless any teams out there know better!!!!!!! Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook should have put up the decorations as hosts of the Christmas get together next week, if they abstained from the delightful local brews long enough... No decorations for the quiz league then.!!!! Christmas do 14 th Dec notice As teams may have noticed the Hare and Hounds car park can get pretty full on a Monday. the suggestion is that for the Christmas Quiz that teams might want to park on the Co-op car park at the top end of Longsight Road (two minutes walk away) to ease congestion. Can Teams can bring prizes for the raffle on the night as usual, many thanks. Our magnificent league Sponsor Bury Reprographics Ltd have generously donated the top prize on the night via owner Roger Bolt (an elf of Stopes Tavern bringing presents who would have guessed it) of a DAB radio on behalf off the teams we thank Bury Reprographics Ltd.for there continued generosity and support. Week 12 Monday 4th Jan 2010 Happy New Year This return to action games after the festive break are all again potentially match of the week contenders on recent form. Top match could be the Hare and Hounds against the visting Stopes Tavern Elves, if one of the teams has shaken the post festive hangover completely they will take the game, it is that close and hard to predict ..... a draw is on the cards but maybe the elves, or the hairy hounds by a point. Radcliffe Cricket Club have Taylor’s Tigers from the Rose and Crown Rammy visiting and on form it’s a nailed down home win but Taylor’s tigers may have the form to upset the leaders, close but a home win. SunDial have the Swan and Railway A visiting and this could easily be match of the week, both teams have played better than the table shows and the SunDial hit form prior to the break, so the SunDial may just have the edge and only just..... Heap Bridge Phoenix nights host Rose and Crown Starling who will be out to avenge the earlier in the season defeat but the visitors will be very wary as the win was deserved and they know any slip up will be punished. A win for the visitors but it will be close again. Final match is Swan and Railway B’s who have the Rammy Cricket club visiting and this could easily be match of the week also, with festivities gone the visitors may just have recovered quicker but a draw will not be a surprise. The PackHorse are having a rest this week but knowing Sue she will have them in full training ready for the off next week. A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side. |
