PHIL'S COMMENTS

On a warm and balmy night in the picturesque north west the shorts and t-shirts were out in force. Dream on, the heavy winter jumpers and thermals is the dress code for the foreseeable future and snow was forecast but our quiz venues are welcoming and warm with the quirkiness of the fixture list meaning that only four competitive games were scheduled for this week, the penultimate week of the first half of the season.
Match of the week this week took place at the Heap Bridge Social club where the Phoenix knights had the Stopes Tavern Elves visiting and for once the predictions rang true as this match turned out to be a crackerjack of a match, both teams are running into top form and both could contend for league honours at the end of the season, the match was on a knife edge in the final round and ended up with honours even in a high scoring game of 51-51.
St. Mary’s Radcliffe held this week’s Derby match as the B’s hosted current champions Radcliffe Cricket Club, the champions have dropped points recently but returned, after a training free week, to Phil Dodd’s required top form as any more points dropped would mean the league defence is probably beyond reach. St. Mary’s B’s played well on the night but the Cricketers played with more purpose and pulled away in the second half to win with an excellent total of 46-59. Team of the week Radcliffe Cricket Club.
Ramsbottom Cricket Club hosted the St. Mary’s A’s this week and kept up their recent run of good form by overcoming the visitors who have had an unlucky first half of the season so far, by a score of 48-33.
Final competitive match this week was at the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook who had old rivals PackHorse Affetside sleighing down the hill to visit, Yosemite Sam Reports:-
On a cold and frosty night a warm welcome was extended to the PackHorse Affetside team at the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook. The PackHorse elected to go first in the quiz but got the trickier questions and went down 8-2 in a bonus-less first round. Hairy Hound then proceeded to pile on the pressure and points by taking rounds two and three by scores of 9-6 and 8-2 respectively for score totals of 25-10. The stink or twist round this week had a theme of Dogs and the Hairy Hounds were panting there good fortune, THE Pack lads going first got to four points and guessed “White Fang” on to fail for the “Call of the Wild” and score zero. The Hairy Hounds confidently went for King Charles Spaniel as the Lady in the “Lady and the Tramp” only for “Cocker” to be the answer, (also the way of a later friendly match), so both teams zeroed and the halftime house scores remained as Hare and Hounds 25 PackHorse 10.
Second half saw the Pack lads form seem to improve as round five resulted in honours even at 6 all. The Hairy Hounds moved up a gear in response and further tightened the screw on the visitors by overcoming the visitors in round six 11-6 and then running away with rounds seven and eight with scores of 9-4 and 7-6. This gave a final score of Hare and Hounds 58 PackHorse 32. Hairy Hounds then lapped up the beer leg and the Birdman swept up across the EU.
Rose Starling played a squad and guests friendly when the Goldsbrough four of, soon to be Granddad Kieran, Chris and partner Helen with Bump took on the three of Lee, Bob and someone else with a bigger bump and with Grandma to be Helen as quizmaster an entertaining night was had, the fun boy three ran out deserved winners by a few.
Rose Rammy played a squad friendly also, Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village, and SunDial Walmersly Rd also had free weeks to enjoy.
All teams are reminded that with the xmas quiz get together at Rose and Crown Rammy hosted by the PackHorse looming large, ideas for Raffle prizes / main Raffle prize are welcome.

Week 12 6-12-2010
Final week of the first half of the season has all teams returning to competitive action and all the games are again potentially match of the week with three local derbies cropping up to spice up the ties nicely.
Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village host the first local derby this week when the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom make the short journey to there venue probably the only venue they could get to if the snow continues to fall. The visiting Tiger’s will want to return to winning form to keep up the pressure at the top of the table but they will have to play well as the Shoulder are impressing all sides in there debut season and a surprise may be instore for the Tigers. Close game a draw may even be the result but the Tigers may just win in the last round.
Top match this round has to be the clash between Current Champions Radcliffe Cricket Club and the visiting League Leaders Rose and Crown Starling, last week saw the Cricketers sweep aside a side in the excellent form they showed all last season, whilst the Rose side had a free week will that tell on the leaders form? The Cricketers know that a loss will mean a successful defence of the title would be almost implausible and the visitors know a win would mean a nice cushion of points going into the second half of the season. The visitors know that all matches they have played have been very tight up to now and this will be no different, the home side may just prevail in this game but not by many!
Second derby match this week see the Ramsbottom Cricketers visit the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook, both sides are showing good form of late but the Hairy Hounds are hunting for honours in the league and may just have the edge over the Cricketers at this stage of proceedings however any slip up at all will be pounced on by the visitors and it will be close at the final tallies.
SunDial Walmersly Rd have the Heap Bridge Phoenix Knights tour bus visiting and a potential match of the week is on the cards. Helens Harem have shown a return to good form of late and so have the Knights after a couple of wrong results. Very competitive and a last round result is on the cards but a win for the home team but only by a point could be the outcome.
St. Mary’s Radcliffe holds its own derby match this week with the B’s hosting the OscAr’s form suggests the B’s to prevail but the A’s have had had an unlucky first half of the season, playing well but just not getting over the finishing line when it mattered so this will be close and it may open the A’s account but only by a very close point in there favour!
Final game of this week and the season’s first half is the visit of the Stopes Tavern Elves to the PackHorse Affetside…. perhaps snow conditions permitting. The Elves are showing improved performance weekly so this week Sue and the Pack lads will have to be on top form to beat the Elves a draw won’t be far away again but the Elves may just be present for a win.
