PHIL'S COMMENTS

The dark and damp autumn atmosphere up north, in comparison to the almost drought conditions down south had teams hotting up to higher scoring matches this week.
The eleventh week of the season saw the end of the first half of matches for most sides , with this season’s competition being somewhat fierce behind the league leaders, this week proved no exception with two top drawn games standing out.
First match to report in was the match at SunDial Walmersley Rd, who had the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom visiting. With the match going the way of the predicted close game, Helen’s Harem tamed Taylor’s Tiger’s saying the curse of the dreaded 50/50 was not so bag this week. Final score 40-37.
Second Match saw Paul Gardner’s Stopes Tavern Elves host the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village, with the Elves on form, losing last week with a score that would have won most matches and with the Shoulder also on top form, a close battle was also predicted here and it didn’t disappoint.
The home side managed to grab all the points with a close 48-44 score but the visitors managed to enjoy the evening and wanted to complement the super chip’s provided and consumed post match.
Third match had the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook hosting the Heap Bridge Social Club, the Phoenix Knights had to be buoyant on there travels after registering the first win of the season last week, Yosemite Sam reports:-
Heap Bridge Social Club ventured to the wilds of Holcombe Brook to mark the midpoint of the league season and the socialite Knight’s elected to go first but then the Hairy Hounds scored well and managed a 7-4 lead by the end of Round one.
In the first individual round both teams got only one of their own questions correct, however the Hairy Hounds managed to pick up three bonus points, with maximum points for Andy Ainsworth’s fictional Abodes, so round two finished up 5-2 with totals of 12-6. Round three was an Honourable draw at four apiece. Stick round had the Phoenix Knight’s stick on two having eventually come up with “n” for the Chess knight. Hairy Hounds stunk on one for the second week in succession, for round scores of 1-2, giving half time totals of Hare and Hounds 17 Heap Bridge Social Club 12.
Round five was completed with a Hairy Hounds full house and the Bridger’s missing just one unanswered question giving a round score of 8-6. Round six saw the Knights score the only four pointer but drop the Celts and it cost them the round, as the bonus was snapped up by the Safety first Hounds who scored 9-8 for totals of 34-26.
Second individual round saw two questions apiece answered correctly but the Knights manage to achieve stardom by picking up a couple of bonuses on historic South American Titlers giving them a round win with a score of 4-6 and totals of 38-32.
Round eight saw both teams drop one question but the Hairy Hounds managed to sneak the only bonus for a round score of 7-6. Final result Hare and Hounds 45 Heap Bridge Social Club 38.
Everyone then tucked into a gorgeous Chilli and the Hounds then fired up a beer leg win. As result of the PackHorse’s respite, the Hounds have moved into second place giving them a nose bleed at the halfway stage.
Match four was the battle of the Cricket Clubs host by Rammy and it turned out to be a cracker, the visitors are on top form but the Rammy Cricketers matched them and caused the 100 percent visitors to forfeit the only point dropped in their first half as this “Great Game” was a draw at 49-49, team of the week Ramsbottom Cricket Club but match of the week…....maybe not see below.
The final match saw the enigma St. Mary’s Radcliffe B host the ailing Rose and Crown Starling. The visiting Rose opted for first questions and round one went question for question until Monica Ali had the Rose describing everything she wore spoke about and had for tea but her name escaped them and it was snapped up for a bonus by the B’s and with Yuri Gagarin landing safely the B’s opened up a 9-6 lead.
The first individual round had categories of Italian Desserts, Sitcom Theme Music, Medical Specialism and Fictional Houses. Both teams sorted things quickly and the round commenced with Bob scoffing the tiramisu for the Rose, however the B’s missed there own Pancetta and Bob missed the bonus. Both teams then scored the next two questions with final questions looming, someone else dropped his pride and prejudice when Pemberley came up and the B’s snapped up a bonus but then they missed Jayne Eyre however someone else was still in a wet shirt and missed the bonus also. Round score 5-6, for totals of 14-12.
Round three saw the first three questions answered but the hosts dropped Fresch and the Rose missed the bonus but then the Rose were tongue tied with Glossitis on there own and it affected the B’s too as the bonus went begging. The next two questions were answered but the B’s missed the home of the C.I.A. and the Rose were still tongue tied missing a bonus Quantico. Round score 4-6 to tie the scores at 18-18.
Round four stink round had a theme of “Knights” of the Round table, the Rose manage to get to two points with an uncertain “n” but the missed that perilous spare empty seat at the round table, sticking on the Two. The B’s easily raced to four but went no further and stuck, round score 4-2. Half time totals St. Mary’s B 22 Rose and Crown 20.
Round five saw the hosts side of Alan Clayton, John Hill, Edith Cathcart and Harry Wilkinson extend their lead significantly when they easily scored a full house and grabbed both bonus points on offer with the Rose missing the Great Dane paper cartoon dog and Whisky Sour which was discounted as the ingredients listed were missing the Crucial Angostura bitters that swilled the glass and were discarded in everyone’s own recipe not realising that the answer was wanting the American recipe only. Round score 10-4 for totals of 32-24. Round six two parters saw both sides play safe throughout to give a safe full house 8 apiece.
Round seven individuals had categories of Hits of the Eighties, South American History, Super Heroes and Hat’s, the Rose hit back this round with a well worked full house and a bonus when someone else survived his hits, but Lee, Kieran and Bob all pulled good answers from the derby hat only the Bowler was missed by both sides. Round score 4-9 for totals of 44-41.
Round eight saw the only question missed being the B’s first as the Banker’s let them down and Royal Bank of Scotland was snapped up by the Rose, who also pondered the answer and would have answered exactly the same if the question was the other way round there own banking question proved a quandary also but the Rose went the correct way for a round score of 6-9 and a final score of St. Mary’s B’s 50 Rose and Crown 50,
and the Match of the week award….. just shared with the other draw.
The B’s then stole the beer leg and the tie break cash by the odd point and decade.
The PackHorse Affetside had a week off, with Sue providing a diet of encyclopedia no dought.
