PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week 12 Jan28 th With everywhere drying out and benefiting a little from a weekend that a rowing boat wasn’t needed to visit the backyard khazi, a full competitive fixture list for the league was again in place. The league leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club had the SunDial Walmersly Rd visiting and with a good win last week Barney’s SunDial were hoping to give Phil Dodd’s men a close game but it wasn’t to be as the Cricketers took a strong hold in the match and ran out 49-30 winners. Ian Openshaw’s Rose and Crown Bury Team had Paul Gardener’s Stopes Tavern team calling on them. In a close match where both teams played well, the home side managed to gain a lead and hold out for a 48-43 point win. In the encounter at Heap bridge Social Club where the Swan and Railway B’s were on tour, the game was a predictably close encounter, both teams are not out of the hunt for league honours this season but the phoenix lad’s have not touched home base for a month and were keen to take the initiative and hold out for a 47-41 win. Match of the week and team of the week occurred at the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom with the PackHorse Affetside tying up at the rail, in a match that Peter Taylor’s home side showed a welcome return to some form they met a Packhorse side that have a never say die attitude and it proved true. The Rose Rammy had gained a five point lead going into the final round but the Packhorse came up on the rails to pull the lead back. and to please Sue Pinder and leave Peter’s team kicking themselves with a result of 44-44. Team of the week PackHorse Affetside. Final game of the week was the visit to Swan and Railway A of the Rose and Crown Starling. In a match that remained close for the first two rounds the home side of John Heenan, Blue Julie Keenan, Louise Hardman, and Captain John Harris capitulated in the third round, however if the overheard discussions had turned up the other choices of answer, it would have remained very close. The visitors side of Kieran Goldsbrough, Terry Brierley, Lee Sawbridge and Bob Selby led 11-21 at the halfway mark. First question of the second half saw a boundary change for the Yorkshire Dales Mountains when they moved to the Lake District courtesy of mentioning no names (John Heenan’s definite answer). The two or four point round could have saw the home side pull back some of the lead if they had a bit more courage and the home side won the second individual round but does anyone know what a “Zucchettos” definitely is? The final round went to the visitors for a final score on a very enjoyable evening at the Swan once again of 52-31. Week 13 Monday Feb 4th Match of the week is the season defining game of the leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club against second placed reigning champions the Rose Starling. In the clash of the titans the Rose have to win to be in with any chance of retaining the title and if the Cricketers win the race is almost won. The home side will have to be on top form but with recent form in mind, the one point loss of the first half of the season could be avenged but it will be very close either way. Second top clash is the Swan B’s at home to the Rose Bury, a close loss last week for the Swan’s will not want to be repeated and the Rose have to win to stay in touch for possible honours, this one will also be very close and a draw is feasible but maybe the Swan’s could be JUST disappointed. The battling PackHorse side have the Swan A’s gliding in to the popular watering hostelry, on form the Pack Horse team should get the result but if the Swan’s get the rub of the green they could spring a surprise to no one but themselves a good contest is predicted but a home win is on the cards. The SunDial have the Phoenix Knights on tour again after last weeks touch with home base and they may prove a tough nut to crack for Barney’s SunDial team, though if the home side play up to possible form this will also be close. An away win is likely though. Final game and another close contest on the cards is the visit of Peter Taylor’s Rose Rammy to Stopes Tavern with both teams not playing to their potential at the moment this would be close with whatever form is displayed. Another draw is a possible result and a close win to either side is a more likely scenario though. All league sides have been invited to take part in a Quiz in aid of The Samaritans on Saturday 9th February all team captains have the details and at least one team has expressed an interest in entering a team, tentative interest has come from other local leagues also. £5 and a supper. A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side. Contact details are on this website
