PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week12Monday 5th Jan 09
The First game back after the yuletide celebrations was marked by a lovely cold snap and a warm hostelry is just what the doctors ordered to keep out the freezing weather.
Match of the week was the game held at Rose and Crown Ramsbottom where the Swan and Railway B’s were the opposition. With the Swan’s on improving form prior to the break a close match was in prospect but Peter Taylor’s Rose team seem to have feasted well and came out ahead on the night to stroll away with the points, the score 47-39.
Ian Openshaw’s team has relocated over the festive period and now represent the more relaxed surroundings of the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook. They were facing the improving SunDial Walmersly Road who are having difficulties rounding up players at the moment due to maternity duties and on that notable excuse, congratulations must go to Helen Lee who is the proud mother of a new baby girl, the Sun Dial will have to build a crèche is what the team say. On the night Ian’s Hare’s raced away to a twelve point lead with the SunDial managing only one point in the first two rounds, but with the hangover clearing they managed to win two of the next three rounds and draw the stick or twist to cut the lead to five points held by the home side. With the Sun Dial improving all the time there only slip up came in the four or two round which the Hare scored heavily and ended up being the saviour of the home side as the visitors won the last two rounds but still ended up on the wrong side of the winning post the score 46-33.
The League leading Radcliffe Cricketers hosted the Packhorse who were hoping to catch the cricketers cold after the break but Phil Dodd’s men were bang on form and top scored on the night to consolidate top spot after slipping up prior to xmas, with a score of 53-32.
Swan and Railway Radcliffe A was the host side for this weeks Radcliffe derby whist the in form, at last, Stopes Tavern were the visitors. In a close run game the home side must have overindulged in mavis’s tonic to succumb in the end to a 34-43 scoreline.
Final match on the night was the Rose and Crown Starling against Heap Bridge Social Club with half the phoenix nights having a tour of Totty on the scenic route, eh, or internal sat nav failure the night started a touch late. The home side was out for revenge on the first half of the season mauling the visitors gave them, the first round saw a one point gap open up and that was the story for each round with the visitors just falling behind by the odd point until it didn’t matter in the final round. A tough match wasn’t helped by the answer Hawaiian Islands on the captain cook question when Sandwich Islands would also have been correct. Corrected score 48-35 to the home side.
Jan12th week 13
This week the league could be decided or it could be blown open again as the top match is the visit of league leaders Cricket club to the second placed Rose starling. If the cricketers are victorious they have virtual all bar the shouting retained the title but if the Rose could stake a claim for the title if they win. Difficult to predict this one and a draw is possible maybe the visitors are too consistent at the moment and may just sneak it.
Swan b have the Huntsman of Holcombe visiting and may just succumb to a revived team but if the Swans pinch Mavis’s tonic this could turn out to be match of the week.
Pack Horse host Swan A’s and on recent form this will be another close battle with the visitors maybe even just favourites, if sue has organised the lads the home side will not be beaten however this is one may just be a surprise.
Sun Dial host the phoenix lads of Heap Bridge and after recent slip ups the visitors will want to get back to winning if they find the venue on the night. The Dial will give them strong opposition though and could spring another surprise if they can field a full team.
Final match this week is the visit of the Rose Rammy to Stopes Tavern with the Taverner’s bursting into life traditionally at this time of year this one is another potential match of the week with the home side maybe just edging it but I wouldn’t be surprised by a draw!
