PHIL'S COMMENTS

The deep freeze was still in effect countrywide, as a full fixture list was scheduled for this week, the last week of the first half of the season, one match had to be postponed due to the loss of the questions at the SunDial Walmersly Rd venue due to a landlady change, they were tidied away, never to be found again even after a frantic search, so the match will be played at a later date against the gallant Phoenix Knights.
Match of the week this week was the Derby match that took place at the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village who had the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom making the short but perilous journey up the hill to visit, the match was closely fought through out but the hosts just missed out in the last round and the Tiger’s slipped home by a score of 47-50.
St. Mary’s Radcliffe held this week’s Radcliffe Derby match as the B’s hosted the A’s, in a one sided match on the night, the B’s overwhelmed the A’s scoring heavily in the second half to win 58-32.
A tough match took place at the PackHorse Affetside where the visitors were the Elves of Stopes Tavern the match was close until the final two rounds then the hosts had a disastrous run and dropped out of contention to lose with a 32-51 score.
Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook was the venue for the second Ramsbottom derby match this week with the Ramsbottom Cricket Club the visitors. Yosemite Sam Reports:-
On a frozen Monday night when it was easier to drive a tram over a viaduct than it was to cross the Hare and Hounds Car park. Ramsbottom Cricket Club trudged there way to Holcombe Brook. The Cricket Crew elected to go first and in a well balanced first round ( score-wise at least ) both teams dropped two questions but also picked up a bonus point each and the round finished level at five points each. In the individuals the Cricketers struggled at times despite Deirdre’s helpful hint. Jack (birdman and cellarman ) Duckworth picked up a bonus for the Hairy Hounds, with Fred Elliott completing the double on the Chicken dishes which helped round two go 8-4 to the Hairy Hounds. Round three was a struggle for both teams and the Hairy Hounds just managed to climb out of the rubble 3-2, round four had both teams calling for the emergency services at four all giving a halftime score of Hare and Hounds 20 Ramsbottom Cricket Club 15.
In a bonus less round five the Ramsbottom Cricket club bounced back to close the scores when they edged the round 4-6. In the twp part round both teams scored maximums on their toys but the Hairy Hounds picked up a bonus to take the round 11-8 and increase the lead again. In the second individual round Seven young Kevin Webster didn’t have any luck on unused surnames, Giant Haystacks regretted his decision not to go for the wrestling questions but gained a bonus point on Georgy Girl after having ceded a point with Beryl Reid. Both geographical experts picked up points to give a high score of three points each on the round. In the final round the questions were more up the Hairy Hounds Coronation Street and they rescued the round to get back on the tram track with a 9-4 score for a final result of Hare and Hounds 47 Ramsbottom Cricket Club 36. The beer leg was taken leg before by the Cricketers.
A top match was on the cards when the current champions and second place Radcliffe Cricket Club hosted the unbeaten league leaders Rose and Crown Starling, the visitors approached the venue with some trepidation as they wondered if they could get in the carpark, however that turned out to be the least of there worries on the night. The Rose elected to go first on the night which was there first mistake, round one went with both teams until the final question for the Rose when the county of Robert Kett’s rebellion in 1549 gave both sides Norfolk of a chance and the round went 8-6 to the Cricketers. Round two saw the visitors pick up a full house and a bonus Kalahari for Lee for them to gain hope for a win, which would later turn out to be the only round win and bonus point they achieved on the night, with a score of 6-9 and a lead of one point 15-14. Round Three had the Rose miss the Mary Crosby Dallas characters surname which wasn’t picked up and they also dropped the Spanish Captain Casillas which was snatched up for a bonus by the Cricket Club after they had dropped the Eastender Character who shot Phil Mitchell, with result that the Cricketers retook the lead in the match 21-19. Round Four had the Rose come to a halt at four when the Wigan Warrior 2010 man of Steel stumped them, however the Cricketers pressed home there advantage by scoring a full house to give half time totals of Radcliffe Cricket Club 29 Rose and Crown 23.
The second half and round five saw the Rose drop the Apple co-founder which wasn’t picked up and all other questions were answered for a 6-8 score. Round six saw both teams score two maximum four points with the only points dropped completely being the Aquitaine region by the Rose which wasn’t picked up for a bonus. Round score 12-10 to increase the Cricket club lead to 39-49. Round seven individuals saw the Rose drop the first two questions but only lose one bonus when the Cricketers scored with Lynn Redgrave the Cricketers only missed the unused Surname in the round to give round scores of 4-7, for totals of 43-56. The final round Eight had a disenchanted Rose side drop the final two questions on the S.B.S and the oystercatcher which only the bird was picked up for a bonus but an in-form Cricket Club also scored a full house on the round to give a final score of Radcliffe Cricket Club 65 Rose and Crown Starling 47. Team of the week Radcliffe Cricket Club. Note only four bonus points were scored on the night, three to the Cricketers and one for the Rose, the Cricketers having dropped just three questions on the night. The beer leg went to the Rose subs bench who missed just two answers with the Rose team coming second and the tie break pennies went to the Cricketer Ken who was closest.
The outstanding fixture on the list was at the SunDial Walmersly Rd, this was caused by the accidental loss of questions due to a change of landlady at the venue when the fixture was due to be played, the match took place last Monday the 3rd January when the Knights of Heap Bridge made there shortest journey of the season and in a close fought and enjoyable contest that had some extremely confusing questions on deep space according to Helen, the Knights overcame the Harem in the final round to win with a score of 30-33. Match of the week and team of the week obviously.
All teams are reminded that with the xmas quiz get together at Rose and Crown Rammy hosted by the PackHorse looming large, ideas for Raffle prizes / main Raffle prize are welcome.

Week 13 13-12-2010
Final competitive week of the year before the Christmas Season and the Christmas quiz at the Rose Rammy, has a full fixture list, hopefully all venues will be accessible in the current freezing weather we are warming too.
Rose and Crown Starling have the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village visiting and they will want to return to winning ways as they took a mauling at the Radcliffe Cricketers, the visitors will not be an easy opponent however and there form has tended to improve weekly recently now that they are used to the format, a win for the home team but it will be closer than may be expected.
Potential match of the week takes place at the Ramsbottom Cricket Club when they host the Radcliffe Cricket Club and the Phil Dodd’s visitors are playing on top of there form at the moment but the hosts may run them very close if they bat sensibly and with confidence, this could be a surprise for the visitors and a close home win is the prediction…… maybe.
A battle royal may also be fought at the Heap Bridge Social Club who have the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook visiting with the Leaders taking a fall last week the title race is again in the balance and the Hairy Hounds are strong contenders, the Knights however are a formidable opposition and could upset the applecart here a home win would not be a surprise but the visitors may just have the edge.
St. Mary’s A have the SunDial Walmersly Rd visiting in another potential match of the week. The SunDial and Helens Harem have been showing a return to form and may expect a victory on paper but the A’s will be looking to kick start there season at last and they may just achieve that victory here but it will be only just…..
Stopes Tavern host the Radcliffe Derby this week when the St. Mary’s B’s visit, with both sides tasting victory last week the tealeaves predict a very close affair with the game going down to the wire, a seasonal victory for the elves may be on the cards or it may be a draw…..
Final match this week is the PackHorse’s visit to the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom the visitors are the hosts at the venue for the Christmas get together on the 20th but they will not want to lose this match, however the Taylor’s tiger have hit a run of form and may not be in a charitable mood either. A close game is on the menu but the hosts may just have the result but only by a point and a draw won’t be a surprise here either.
