PHIL'S COMMENTS

The twelfth week of the season was the start of the return fixtures and with most teams playing on tip top form, the results as you will see, proved to be very close in three matches and the remaining two had good scoring also.
First match to report in was the match at St. Mary’s Catholic Club Radcliffe who had PackHorse Affetside visiting the B’s. With the PackHorse coming back to competition after there week off and flying high in the league and the enigmatic B’s on top form on the back of a high scoring tie last week, this was difficult to predict. The PackHorse were hoping to avenge the opening week defeat but the B’s were giving nothing away and both sides swapped rounds and it came down to the last round but the hosts hung on for a single point win with a 47-46 final score.
Second Match saw Paul Gardner’s Stopes Tavern Elves host the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom with the hosts playing on top of there game, the visitors were coming back to form after a dip and the match went all the way down to the last question with the advantage being in Rose Rammy’s favour, however the final question was passed for a bonus point and the Elves snapped up that point to force a draw at an excellent 49-49.
Third match had the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook hosting there and everyone else’s nemesis, unbeaten leader’s Radcliffe Cricket Club in the top of the table clash. Yosemite Sam reports:-
Start of the second half of the season saw Current champions and champions elect Radcliffe Cricket Club arrive at Holcombe Brook, with the Hare and Hounds buoyant from the breaking news that the superb Beer festivals were returning once again to the Hare and Hounds in 2012.
Doddy’s Cricket Crew elected to go first, however they got lost on the “motorway”, which allowed the Hairy Hounds to navigate a bonus point. All other questions were successfully answered and the Hounds took the round and set an early lead 9-6.
First individuals proved a problem for both sides with only two questions answered by there original selectors, however the Cricketer’s won the bonus battle 2-3, to take the round and peg back the home advantage by a point 4-5, overall 13-11. Rounds three and four, stink round, were tied at seven apiece and two apiece respectively to give a half time score of Hare and Hounds 22 Radcliffe Cricket Club 20.
Round five saw the Hairy Hounds call “thyme” instead of going for the old wise man answer with the sausage and the doddy crew sizzled in for the only bonus chance and took the lead with a 6-9 score and 28-29 overall.
Round six two parters saw the Cricketer’s go for the “old man” instead of the “giant’s cave” and the round finished 13-8 to the Hairy Hounds who once again took the lead 41-37. Round seven second individuals saw the Hounds increase the gap to seven points with a full house and a bonus, for a score of 9-6 and totals of 50-43 going into the final round, nosebleed time. Hairy Hounds served up the first unanswered question and Doddy’s men snapped up the Psycho shower scene for a bonus. The second questions went like for like correctly, then the Hounds dropped their third question and “donated” a bonus point to the Cricketers who had now closed the advantage for the Hounds to just two points. Hairy Hounds just had to answer their final question, which they expected to be a classic film scene question to take a victory over the unbeaten leaders. The atmosphere was tense but then came the jaw dropping moment, as the question was read to them, possibly the most unanswerable question in the history of the league appeared on their laps and with no answer from either side it gave the Champions a “get out of Jail free card”, and when the Radders took that chance by answering correctly, it meant the match finished up as an honourable draw at magnificent scoring of Hare and Hounds 52 Radcliffe Cricket Club 52, (with this being the second draw in a row for the Cricketers, could they give the rest of the league a chance by drawing their remaining 9 matches, I doubt it!). The Hairy Hounds took the beer leg. Radcliffe Cricket Club hold on to their unbeaten status while across the Pennines Huddersfield Town footballers were losing theirs. On the beer side, if the Hounds make it to the cup semi-final and are drawn at home, then there will be a hell of a choice of beers available to enjoy on the night, make a note in your diaries.
Fourth match to report in was the Rammy Derby at the Cricket Club with the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village visiting, this match being the first time these two sides had met this season due to work commitments in the first half and the match still has to be re-arranged. The Rammy Cricketers are in sparkling form at the moment and are playing with there tails up, they took the honours on the night, against a Shoulder team that are only a point or two off of good run themselves, with a score of 53-43 and to rub salt into any wounds, the Cricketers took the beer leg by just an odd point 19-18.
Final game saw the Rose and Crown Starling host the Heap Bridge Social Club Phoenix Knights both teams seem to be competing for the wooden spoon this season with Heap Bridge winning that battle at the moment and the Rose were hoping to improve on the first half score of a draw that has shown the way for that half of the season for them.
The Knights chose to go first and wished they hadn’t after the first question as the motorway proved too much for them but the Rose team missed the bonus. The other questions in the first round proved little trouble for both teams, with the bra question snapped up by expert Kieran who included size, shape and cup. Round score 8-6.
Round two individuals had categories of British Mining, Fast Cars, Lancs-Yorks T.V. and Gongs. First questions were negotiated successfully, then the fast cars proved a sticking point for the Knights and someone else snapped up a bonus Lotus with the Williams Renault grabbed eagerly also, the Rose had consolidated there lead. The third questions proved difficult for both sides with the Knights missing out on born and bred and the Rose’s Anne answering too full with “Home is where the heart is” rightfully ruled incorrect by Helen the question master, however the Knights maybe a little discombobulated, failed to snap up the shortened bonus much to the derision of team mates, this proved to be the only bonus point chance the Rose gave the Knights in this first half. With final questions negotiated safely again, the round score was 7-4 for totals of 15-10. Round three proved a disaster for the Knights who managed to grab just one of their own questions with the Crocodiles Tears and then gnash there teeth when Arnolfini brushed by, along with John Travolta and Gene Autry’s Angels, the latter being the only bonus point scored however, on top of a second full house round for the hosts. Round score 9-2 , totals 24-12.
Round four, stink or twist round, had a theme of Beards. The Knights scored quickly with the first two questions but came unstuck on the plant family that included Old Man’s Beard to stick on 2. The Rose quickly answered the first two and eventually took a calculated chance when Peter Ustinov was thought of quickly but disputed a little, to place some doubt in nationality. However the answer was given and four points reached with that same doubt ringing round Barbarrosa was missed and the Rose stuck on four. Halfway scores Rose and Crown 28 Heap Bridge Social Club 14.
The second half got underway with the first three questions answered successfully until the Acid production process stopped the Knights team of Neil Jones, Steve Henry, Derek Lord and Barrie Birch, on there second question, the Rose snapped up the bonus Sulphuric Acid but then dropped there own third question when Alcohol scales proved too strong on the reciprocal question and the Knights also missed the bonus. With all other questions negotiated successfully, the round score was 7-6 for totals of 35-20. Round six, two part questions had the Rose team of Anne, Terry and Kieran have the right answer on four but someone else wimped out with his answer and went for a safe two. The Knights took an incorrect stab on there first for two and the Rose who had worked out the stiff Staffa answer on four, snapped up the bonus point. Both the next questions scored excellent four pointers, then the bulbous Crocus forced a two point answer from the Rose, with the Flocks of wool and sheep also going for two by the knights by sides scored maximum fours on there final questions. This gave the round score of 13-10 and totals of 48-30.
Round seven second individuals, had categories of On location in Snowdonia, National Instruments, Nissans and Premier League Mascots. Question one proved a bit confusing for Anne and also for the Knights as a bonus but everyone in the room had the Knights Carry on location. The Rose then correctly negotiated the rest of there own individuals but the Knights dropped there Marimba and Murano, which wasn’t picked up for bonus points. The forth category of Mascots had both teams feigning difficulty in the answer in the question choice. Round score 6-4 and totals of 54-34.
With round eight meaning that the Knights were playing just for pride, they cemented that with an excellent full house, whilst the Rose dropped two questions, not recognising Air Force one and the almost impossible to answer “No one will be admitted to the theatre after the start of the performance” which even had a spelling mistake in the printed answer and if anyone got close, it stated on the sheet to give them the points, no bonus points were picked up so the round score was 4-8 to give the Knights a deserved round win. Final totals of Rose and Crown 58 Heap Bridge Social Club 42.
The beer leg was snaffled by the Rose by a single point and the tie break money went to someone else by a couple of years in ten only.
Team of the week award goes to Ramsbottom Cricket Club, and match of the week award goes to ……… BOTH DRAWS.
The SunDial had a week off, with Helen’s Harem revising.

Week 13 5-12-11
Week Thirteen has two derbies and matches that could prove to be as close as last week.
Match one is the Rammy Derby with Rose Rammy hosting the Cricket Club, both teams seemed to have found good form and a close match is expected but the visitors may …just have an edge however but it will be marginal.
Second match is the Holcombe Derby with the village hosting the brook, both sides on top form would mean the match would be close but the guide has it the Hairy Hounds will be the victors over the Shoulder, however they have to be careful…..
Third match has the Radcliffe Cricket Club hosting the Rose Starling with both teams on form this one could be very close with the Cricket Club dropping points recently with two draws, the Rose may just have the edge …….. maybe.
Fourth match has Heap Bridge Phoenix Knights hosting the enigma St. Mary’s B. With signs that form is returning to the hosts, this one maybe closer than the tables suggest and a draw is not out of the question, home win by a point controversially.
Final match has the PackHorse hosting the SunDial with the PackHorse going down narrowly last week they will want to hit back and hold there place in search of top honours but the Harem are playing well and will run them close. Perhaps a draw but the Harem may win by just a point ……..perhaps again controversially.
The Stopes Tavern Elves are having a week off from the quiz making Toys to deliver in a few weeks time..
The Christmas function at St. Mary’s Catholic Club on 19th Dec, is looming and ideas for Raffle first prizes are required from teams. If teams are not going to attend please let the Secretary know as food numbers are required please.
