PHIL'S COMMENTS
|
All teams have been in action this week, and the league title race has been thrown wide open again with the result of the match of the week. Rose and Crown Starling league leaders had second place Radcliffe Cricket Club visiting. The Cricketers led by Phil Dodd, with Tony Kaye, Barry Maden, Mark Dobson ably supporting, set up a 3 point advantage by the end of round 2. But the leaders came back and with Wally Warrington on form, turned it round to a three point advantage at the halfway point. Round 5 proved to be the pivotal point in this match and other matches played, the Cricketers gained a three point advantage again, which couldn't be pulled back by the league leaders. 'Gutted we didn't get 60' said a spokesperson for the cricketers. It means the Cricketers and The Rose Starling are on level match points, with game points now being crucial for both teams as well as the results.
The game at the Swan and Railway between fourth placed B's and third placed Rose and Crown Bury followed exactly the same pattern of scoring as the week's top match, the Rose Bury keep up their close challenge for league honours by putting an end to the slim league title ambitions of Alec's B's with a score of 36-46. The Stopes Tavern hosted the Rose and Crown Rammy, with Paul Gardiner's side showing some form recently and Peter Taylor's Rammy team determined to overcome the predictions. Rose Rammy came away winners with the score being 37-47. The Sun Dial had to field a depleted team against the visiting Heap Bridge Social Club, with Eunice talent spotting in Thailand and illness. The Phoenix lads, back to away team strength after last week's holidays and substitute cry-offs, were able to overshadow the Sun Dial team 30-42. All the league players would like to wish Roger a full and speedy recovery from his illness which hopefully wasn't brought on by the recent close results we hope. Final result of the week and the only win for the home team in all matches, was the improving Pack Horse cantering in against a probably well watered Swan A team, 43-18. Week 14 All games are important in terms of league honours for the leading teams, but with all teams capable of beating them, none will find it an easy ride. Top match this week is Heap Bridge against Rose Starling. With Neville playing, the Phoenix Lads can be a very potent force indeed and the Rose have to win to keep up title retention hopes after this week's loss. Rose Rammy play hosts to the Swan B's, with Rammy returning to champion beating form, Enid and the Swan B's may well have to paddle hard for any result. A hard fought home win is the prediction but will Peter Taylor make me eat my words again? Radcliffe Cricket club have the Pack Horse visiting the Racecourse. With Phil Dodd's men batting on top form, Sue Pinder and the Pack Horse lads will find the going heavy but they could go the distance if they run on last year's showing. Rose Bury are at home to the Sun Dial, and if the Sun Dial team is still a bit overcast they will find this very tough. Ian Openshaw's Rose team's league honours fate is very much in their own hands but they have to win all remaining games. Final match of the week is the Swan A hosting the Stopes Taverners. With Mavis's tonic losing its fizz recently, the Taverners may well steal the fare if they play to form in this up and down season. |
