PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week 13 Feb 5th A slight emergency happened this week, when on the night the Packhorse Affetside found after the questions were opened that their quiz started in the middle of round 3 as the first page was missing so they did the second half of the quiz first and the league secretary delivered the first page, second hand as was, from the Rose Starling. The opponents at the Packhorse were Swan and Railway Radcliffe A and after the second half first John Harris’s Swan A’s must have wished the quiz had ended as they were four points in front but with Sue Pinder leading the Packhorse team they overcome the deficit in the first half second as such to win the match 39-34. Joint match of the week was the top of the table clash at the second placed Rose and Crown Starling where unbeaten league leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club were visiting, with the team led by Phil Dodd and supported by Tony Kaye, Mark Dobson and Ken Jones they started well and had built a six point lead by the end of round two. The Rose team of Kieran Goldsbrough, Lee Sawbridge, Bob Selby and the legend Wally Warrington fell another point behind in round three but drew round 4 to go into a seemingly bleak half time score of 18-25. Round five saw the home team pull back six points of the Cricketers lead when they scored a full house and picked up two bonus points, the Rose then gained a lead of two points in round six and added a further two in round seven, when the final round was drawn it ended with a winning score of 54 -50 to the team of the week Rose and Crown Starling in an excellent match played by both teams. Another excellent match was held at the Swan and Railway where the B’s hosted the Rose and Crown Bury. The home side after an excellent first individual round had pulled out a five point advantage but Ian Openshaw’s Rose Bury side clawed the deficit back to tie at half time. The second half saw the Rose Bury take command and build a fourteen point lead over rounds five six and seven, and a drawn last round, the final score 38-52. The SunDial Walmersley Road, had the Heap Bridge Social Club tour bus visiting and in a very competitive game, the Phoenix lads who seemed to have sorted there away form at long last gained another win with a score of 41-48. The final game and joint match of the week was at Stopes Tavern where Peter Taylor’s Rose and Crown Rammy side journeyed to face Paul Gardener’s side in a match that went down to the wire with both sides sharing a lead finished with a result on the last question that had the win going to the Rose Rammy by the narrowest of margins 41-42. Week 14 Monday Feb 11th Match of the week is the visit of the PackHorse to the Cricket Club at Radcliffe with Phil Dodd’s side being defeated for the first time last week, they will have the heavy rollers out to ensure a smooth wicket The PackHorse could leave hoof marks on the square though, if they play to their best form and the team is sporting there Sunday brass. A home win is the likely result, BUT? Just pipped for top match is the visit of Rose Starling to the Phoenix nights at Heap Bridge, with last weeks win over the leaders still fresh and the league honours still open, the Rose side have to win to keep hopes alive and the Phoenix lads have hit a rich vein of form of late, so this one is going to be tough for both sides. On scoring form alone, an away win is on the cards but it will be very close. Rose Bury host the SunDial and depending on whether the Sun Dial are in fighting form will dictate the game, as anything less and the Rose will be runaway winners. If the SunDial are fighting fit then this could be a very close game and a win is not beyond the visitors. Rose Rammy have the Swan B’s visiting, with a heavy defeat last week the Swan’s hope to get back to winning ways but Peter Taylor’s Rose Rammy are also looking to continue a run. This will be a win but for who? Final game is at the Swan and Railway for the Radcliffe derby match of the A’s against Paul Gardner’s Stopes Taverners if Blue Julie along with Louise and the boys are on form, a home win could be on the score sheet but you can be certain an entertaining night is on the cards. A close game is probable however and the visitors could just steal the points after last weeks narrowest of losses it could go to the wire again though!. A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side that start free weeks shortly. Contact details along with the league tables are on this website.
