PHIL'S COMMENTS
With the big freeze gone and temperatures beginning to rise to relatively tropical, the Bury Reprographics Quiz league is starting to hot up, with matches this week being very competitive and the league is wide open again.
Match of the week, but only just was the top of the league clash between second place Rose and Crown Starling and league leaders Radcliff Cricket Club, if the match went one way season and league decided if it went the other season and league open again.
First round was a nervy and difficult round with the cricketers choosing to go first they didn’t have the rub of the questions and the home side managed in a low scoring round to open up a two point lead, which the Cricketers side of Phil Dodd, Mark Dobson, Ken Jones and Tony Kaye promptly turned around into a two point deficit at the end of round two. A full house for the home side meant the two point advantage was restored after round three, and with both teams playing safe and sticking on two after round four, the scores were a modest 18-16, in favour of the Rose.
Second half saw the Rose open a five point gap with a full house and a bonus in five. With the Rose playing steady in the first part of the two part questions and picking a bonus the lead was up to six. Then two colossal educated gambles for four points each by the Cricketers and the Rose not having the courage of their convictions, saw the Cricketers take the round 10-9, but it wasn’t quite enough to close the gap and attack the lead. With both teams having a mixed individual round and drawing the round at 5 a piece, the last round approached, with the home team having a four point advantage. But however tense it was on the night, the last round petered out and saw a full house for both sides, and the Rose took the victory with a score of 49-45 to level the league points, but the Cricketers must remain title favourites with a good “goal” advantage.
A close candidate for match of the week, the Rose & Crown Ramsbottom made the long journey to Radcliffe to do battle with the Taverners of Stopes.
With Peter Taylor electing to go 1st, his decision proved correct as the Stopes fell behind & trailed 9-5 after 2 rounds. A more fruitful 3rd round saw Paul Gardners Stopes showing just a point deficit going into the “stick or twist” round. Rd 4 saw the Taverners searching for their very thick “book of excuses” as the questions were badly mis-matched & surprisingly Stopes scored just a solitary point to the Roses 4 to trail 15-19 at half time.
With honours even in R5, it was now time to throw caution to the wind & gamble on the 2 part questions!!! And Stopes quickly fell on their own Sword, drawing a blank on the 1st question & eventually fell further behind to show a 7 point difference at 28 – 35 with just 2 rounds to go!!!
Staring down the Barrel of a Gun surely Stopes recent winning streak was coming to an end? With the sweet smell of victory in their nostrils, the Rose decided to show Stopes their charitable side & collapsed on the individual Rd to eventually collect only a further 4 points over the last 2 rounds, whilst the Taverners scored heavily & collected 16 to run out 44-39 winners. NB: A note to the League Secretary from Paul. For future seasons, can we start the league in January??
Swan and Railway Radcliffe B’s had the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook visiting in full regalia and in a enjoyable affair the home team romped away with the points with a 50 -36 Score line.
Another high scoring match was held at the Sun Dial Walmersly Rd who had the Phoenix Nights tour bus from Heap Bridge Social club pulling up, with the home team struggling again for players with Helen’s maternal duties they played with three on the night which is no match for the Phoenix lads who provided the question master also. The Phoenix lads were in top form though and they ran away with it to register a score of 20-60.
Final Match this week was at the Packhorse Affetside who hosted the Swan and Railway A’s in a close match early on the Packhorse gained the advantage and pulled away to win with a score of 44-26.
Jan19th week 14
This week their is some very close matches to be had and it will be a tough night for a couple of teams.
Radcliffe Cricketers host the Sundial and with the SunDial struggling for players this may be a romp for the league leaders after last weeks loss. Home win by lots if SunDial are short.
Hare and Hounds have the Stopes Taverners calling, and this one may be to tough for the homeside on current form, but if they bounce back to form at home then this could be very close indeed. Away win but close.
Swan A host Rose Starling and with everything to fight for in the league title race, this one will be the tough for the home side and the visitors will be wanting to score heavily but it will be a great evening whatever the score.
Next two matches are possible matches of the week. Heap Bridge host the Swan B’s with last week a scoring fest for both sides this week will be tougher I’m sure. Possible draw but the home side may just have a Neville advantage.
Final Match has the PackHorse hill hopping to Rose Rammy and another draw could be on the cards but with the home side smarting from last weeks defeat they may just and only just have the advantage against a Pack horse side that maybe showing some form again.
