PHIL'S COMMENTS

With all Teams sporting snow shoes and Crampons, this weeks fixtures survived the big freeze, and it seems the cold has jogged the brains into activity post festivities, as good scores were posted by most teams.
First match was the visit to the in form SunDial Walmersly Rd and Barney with the Harem, of the PackHorse Affetside and Sue and the Lads, who are returning from a long festive break with a fortunate free week last Monday. So with a troika built for transport and Sue must have been feeding the lads on encyclopedia for the entire break, as they destroyed the predicted loss to post top score on the night and earn team of the week accolade. Barney and the Harem have been showing some decent form of late but succumbed to a score of 34-61.
The predicted match and upset of the week had the unbeaten Radcliffe Cricket club visiting the tipped to win, Stopes Tavern, with the elves seemingly resting after the seasonal rush it was the Cricketers who set the pace, the elves awoke and started to chase but the winning form, and the pre-christmas hype had deserted them and they could not match the visitors on the night, Phil Dodd’s leaders took the match 48-59. Maybe Paul’s elves did get snowed in at the hound’s venue last week and are still suffering from the hangover.
The Game at the Swan and Railway Radcliffe had the A’s against the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook and in the Match of the week; Yosemite Sam has sent his report.
Two teams that were willing to venture through the snows met in Radcliffe on a braw bricht nicht. Swan A's Red Devils were at home to the Hairy Hounds. Mavis of the famous brew, was the question mistress for most of the occasion, she was substituted after round 6 (so she could finish making the supper), although her spectacles continued in her absence to read the questions. Peter Maguire, in a moment of madness (remembering days of Yore), opted for The Hairy Hounds to go SECOND! So after one question each Swan A took the lead 1-0 by answering a bonus. Hounds clawed it back to lead 7-5 at end of first round. Swan A took 2nd round 7-6 courtesy of John Harris's in-depth knowledge of Coronation Street.
Round 3 was drawn at 4 apiece. Swan A went for it with a guess on Stick or Twist on 4 points, but blanked as a result. Hound’s guess was better on 2 points, so they played safe and stuck on 4, the Hairy Hounds gaining a 5 point half-time advantage. Swan A won next 2 rounds 5-4 and 10-8. So the Swan’s had pulled most of the deficit back and stood only 2 points behind going into Round 7. However Waltzes, Literary Adjectives and New Universities were to scupper the Swan’s and the Hounds took the round 10-2. With the Final round full house, it was taken 8-6 by Swan A and with much relief, even though the Swan A won four rounds, drew one round; they had lost 41-49 to the Hounds mainly due to the disastrous 2nd individual round. As normal in the Swanery, a goodnight was enjoyed by all, although to compound Swan A's misery, City could be heard winning in the background.
Ramsbottom Cricket Club had dug themselves out of the snow and had the Phoenix Knights of Heap Bridge Social club visiting, Rammy’s match last week had been postponed due to adverse weather and the visitors had pushed Rose Starling to worrying point so the form said the visitors may have the edge but the home side’s enforced rest had envigorated them and a return to the form at the opening of the season saw them take a close match until the end, with a score of 55-47.
Final match this week was the visit of Swan and Railway B and the team of Alec Fontaine, Alan Clayton, John Hill, Harry Wilkinson to the Rose and Crown Starling and in a very noisy venue due to the attendance of the city fan, the match started well, with the Swan’s having third or fourth thoughts on going first or second but finally decided on sticking with tradition and going first.
The first round had the Swans swimming to a full house whilst the home side plumbed for the name of a car instead of the arrows pointing in the generals direction for openers and the swans picked up the custard for a 6-9 lead. Round two saw all individuals score except the monarchs although someone else picked his bonus up but failed his own question to look a proper charlie 13-15. Round three saw Herbie foil the home side and the visitors fail to pick the bonus but score a full house on the round to lead by four 19-23.Both teams then stuck at four in the stick or twist round to notch up a half time score of 23-27. Round Five saw the home side pick up a bonus on the High Chapparel to register a full house and nine points against the swans six points scored 32-33. Four or two points saw both teams play safe on the first question instead of going for the obvioius but the Rose took four on the Arthur C. Clarke date but missed a bonus point when the Swans froze on the disneyland date. Safety first followed for the home side but the Swans scored a four on kurds and weighed in with an eight point overall round score against the home sides ten 42-41. Round seven individuals was the turning point towards the Rose when only kafka scored for the Swans whilst the Rose scored a full house and land bonus universities and boozy races for another ten points 52-43. Final round saw a full house for both sides to post a high scoring game of 60-51 and a win for the Rose team of Kieran, Lee, Terry and someone else.
The Rose and Crown Rammy tigers were clearing the drive of snow this week.

Will the home team captains please let the secretary know the dates of the re-arranged games from last week as soon as they are decided please.

Week 14Monday 18th Jan 2010
This week fixtures have yet again some very interesting match ups based on last weeks results. Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook have Ramsbottom Cricket Club bowling in and with the Rammy Cricketers regaining some of there early season form this one looks as though it could be a contender for match of the week. An away win and a home win is a distinct possibility so the prediction is a sober draw.
Heap Bridge Phoenix Knights have the Stopes Tavern Elves visiting and the Elves seemed to have overworked during the Festive season as they have succumbed in both games so far this year. The Phoenix knights have also had a less than cheerful start to the year so this one seems bang on for match of the week, result... prediction is ....close win for the home team.
Radcliffe Cricket Club have Barney and the Harem visiting from the SunDial, odds are on a home win, however if the visitors keep there nerve then it could be closer than the Harem are thinking. Home win but not by many.
PackHorse have Rose and Crown Rammy arriving on the bobsleigh and in another potential match of the week Peter Taylors Tigers could benefit from the weeks rest, but Sue and the lads have there tails up after posting top score last week. Difficult to predict and a draw is a distinct possibility so I go for a home win ...... just.
Final game has the Rose and Crown Starling langlaufing to the Swan and Railway Radcliffe to play the A’s in a fixture that is always a favourite on the visitors calender the easy answer is to say an away win, but the A’s have shown some signs of good form again last week so it will be an away win prediction but the a’s may spring a surprise!!!!!
The Swan b’s are preening on a free week after last weeks defeat.

A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side. Contact details along with the league tables are on this website.
