PHIL'S COMMENTS
The quick respite in the deep freeze has most people knowing someone or suffering from heavy colds and flu, with venues full of football fans this week due to the match at Old Trafford a lot more will probably suffer over the festivities too. The Second half of the season kicked off this week with good scoring and a long awaited win for one team.
First match this week saw the in form Radcliffe Cricket Club visit Cricket Club rivals Ramsbottom, Phil Dodd has rallied his Radcliffe troops of late and they are top scorers again this week as they routed the Rammy Cricketers with a 22-61 scoreline.
Match of the week and team of the week went to the Hosts of and the match at St. Mary’s Radcliffe where the A’s took on the SunDial Walmersley Rd. With the OscAr’s being firmly ensconced at the foot of the table with out a win in the first half of the season, half of the team went to the match at Old Trafford for inspiration but when the two John’s returned to the venue post match they found the sub’s bench had played a blinder and set up a last round win with a score of 37-39, John Heenan gently enquired is there a moral to this result.
Rose and Crown Starling hosted Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village, the visitors have played well in there debut season and tonight was no exception. The Shoulder elected to go first and faulted just the second question in the first round when Wimbledon Men’s Singles couldn’t be recognised, this was picked up by the home Rose side for a bonus but the home side then dropped the Hotmail and Tony Roche answers themselves which wasn’t picked up but it still meant an early lead for the visitors with a 5-6 score. Round 2 saw both teams score an individual maximum full house, round three saw the Rose drop the first question when “goosegrass” proved to sticky for them and also wasn’t picked off as a bonus by the Shoulder who then lemoned out with there own “Scurvy grass” which had the Rose stumped too, a six apiece scoreline for the round. Round 4 stink or twist saw the visitors stumped by the much repeated on TV, film of Iron Petticoat also not picked by anyone else and they stuck on four. The Rose were then foiled by Bismarck’s Blood and Iron speech to register two points only. The Halftime score Rose and Crown Starling 21 Shoulder of Mutton 24.
The second half started poorly for the Rose when they missed the “Gypsies” name origin which was snatched up for a bonus, but the Shoulder then missed out with “Amman” but no bonus was scored both teams failed on the final questions of the round when the giant “Fingal” could not be traced by either side also “mad carew” stumped both sides for a round score of 4-5 to increase the Shoulder’s advantage to 25-29. The home side of Lee, Anne, Bob and Kieran were becoming very nervous about the deficit in the scores. Round six, the two parters saw the Rose side score a safe two points on the first question, and the Shoulder could not recall there Bond Jinx actress Halle Berry which scored a bonus for the Rose. The Rose then scored a maximum four with the second question and the Shoulder picked up there only points of the round with “Easter Island”. Question three scored two and a bonus November for the Rose and four saw the Rose miss the Balfour answer but pick up a bonus Harold Wilson for a first winning round score for the home side of 11-2 and a turn around in the overall score to 36-31.
Round seven individuals saw the home side consolidate there lead with six points and a bonus “Rings of Saturn” missing just Whitehall 1212 of there own. The Shoulder missed the Tyburn tree and the black museum also but picking up the Whitehall bonus for a round score of 7-3. Round eight saw the home side drop just the “Fennec Fox” but pick up a bonus Indonesia, whilst the Shoulder also dropped Ovid’s peacock feather creator Hera for a final round score of 7-4 and a match score of Rose and Crown St. 50 Shoulder of Mutton 38, the visitors side of Richard Youngman, Stuart Burtwell, Jason Crausby and Mal Ashton played well but only lost the plot when John Ireland arrived at the venue after his meeting (and he left all his paperwork behind)! The beer leg was snatched by the home side but the visitors scored with the coastline tie break.
The Radcliffe Derby took place this week at Stopes Tavern where the visitors were St. Mary’s B’s a closely fought match on the night ended with the host Elves being the victors as per their seasonal good form with a score of 53-44.
Rose and Crown Ramsbottom had the PackHorse Affetside visiting and thankful for the thaw the match turned out to be close but tailors tigers have hit form again and overcame the Packhorse team in the second half with a score of 50-36.
The final match this week took place at Heap Bridge Social Club who had the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook visiting Yosemite Sam reports:-
Kicking off the second half of the season, the Hare and Hounds trundled down to the Heap Bridge Social Club in the return fixture and they opted to go first. The Hairy Hounds had team bus Chauffeuse Miriam, making her first appearance of the season standing in for the Birdman who was suffering from Flu or man flu. The Hairy hounds made a good start and gained a full house with a bonus in taking the first round 2-9. The Phoenix Knights came back in the second round however when they scored a full house to take the round 8-6 with neither side breaking down the walls of Caernarfon Castle to score points. The Hairy Hounds then took the third round 4-7, the grasses didn’t cut anything in this round for either side. In the stink or twist Iron round four the Hairy Hounds managed to hold there mettle and steal a further increase in there lead by scoring four to the Knights blanking on the stinkier questions. Midpoint score Heap Bridge 14 Hare and Hounds 26.
Second half saw had both teams score five in round 5, then both teams played safe in the two parters going for the second clue on all questions except neither side scored on there last questions but the Knights scored a bonus point to win the round 7-6. Round seven saw the Heap Bridge Knights pick up extra’s along the yellow brick road and in the Black museum but missing out with the Blue Plaque but closing the gap again winning the round 8-4. Final round saw both teams only score with one of there own questions but the Hair Bear bunch picked up three bonus points to take the round 2-5. Final score on the evening Heap Bridge Social Club 36 Hare and Hounds 46.
It would have been a much higher scoring game had the Knights gone for there alternatives and likewise for the Hounds had Andy Ainsworth not talked himself out of a quarter of his original answers to go for his second choice. The Knights took the beer leg by a point and Andy also got a beer leg courtesy of his pint of Guinness. Answer of the night was Giants Causeway from Miriam whilst Paddy Maguire was still translating the Gaelic.
Two teams are yet to pay there subs for the year could they please provide payment to Margaret Chamberlain Rose Rammy at the earliest opportunity please.
All teams are reminded that with the xmas quiz get together at Rose and Crown Rammy hosted by the PackHorse looming large, the start of the quiz is at 8-30 please be there ready prior to this time. All Raffle prizes are welcome.

Week 14 10-1-2011
First games after the festive season normally springs a few surprises after the excess have taken its toll.
First game see’s the form team Radcliffe Cricket Club host visitors Rose and Crown Ramsbottom, if Taylor’s Tigers are on form I wouldn’t be surprised to see a close match here and perhaps a draw but the form guide say’s a home win, as the pre Christmas scores suggest.
Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook have league leaders Rose and Crown Starling visiting in a top of the table clash, if the home side prevail then the league title chase is wide open but if the visitors prevail then the Hairy Hounds may be challenging only the runners up spot. A difficult one to predict as the Rose’s form has slipped, they will have to return to form but a draw could be the outcome here to open up the league again!
SunDial Walmersley Rd host the Ramsbottom Cricket Club and a close match is on the cards if the Ramsbottom Cricketers have survived the festivities well then an away win …just may be the outcome but a home win could be the final result again only just…
St. Mary’s B’s host Heap Bridge Social Club and again a close result is in the offing, both of the sides slipped up just before the break but will be trying for signs of form returning. Close but the visitors to win ….maybe.
PackHorse Affetside host St. Mary’s A another close game perhaps but the hosts should be free from seasonal distractions and maybe have the edge however the visitors have started this half with a win and could carry that form also. Home win or a draw.
Final game this week has the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village hosting the Elves from Stopes Tavern. Now Shoulder won’t know this but the Elves traditionally always hit top form post Christmas so if this carries over they will prevail, but the home side may scare the visitors as they did the league leaders pre-festivities. Away win but close.
