PHIL'S COMMENTS

The thirteenth week of the season turned out to be snowy, sleety, and windy but the competition in the league was fierce again, and it proved unlucky for the leaders, with the only unbeaten side in the league, current champions Radcliffe Cricket Club losing that record.
First match to report in was the match at Heap Bridge Social Club who were hosting St. Mary’s Catholic Club Radcliffe B’s and the hosts can’t seem to get going with a winning run at the moment, the enigmatic B’s took charge of the match and ran out winners with a score of 37-46.
Second Match had the SunDial Walmersley Rd climb the hill to visit the PackHorse Affetside. A worried Helen’s car broke down whist travelling to pick up the Harem and this year’s husband dutifully turned out to the rescue, (wait until year ten, it will be “didn’t you take your wellies!”) of the damsel in distress. However the phone call to the PackHorse over the impending possible late arrival never got through, the Harem though didn’t get ruffled it seems as they battled the high flying PackHorse side round for round and upset the host’s honour aspirations, by taking the tie with a close 41-45 score.
Third match was the Ramsbottom Derby hosted by the Rose and Crown with the Cricket Club donning the crampons to climb the hill. The match was a round by round thriller, with no quarter taken and none given, as scores were matched throughout. Not surprisingly then the match was a tie at 45-45, and even the beer leg couldn’t separate the teams on the night as that also ended with a tie. Match of the week.
Fourth match had the Holcombe derby with Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village hosting the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook, with John Ireland of the host’s stating rounds two and three did for them and they couldn’t make up the distance even though they had a good second half. Yosemite Sam reports on the match:-
Hairy Hounds took the short journey up the road to the place where the brook gets lost. Shoulder of Mutton men were waiting and pointed the Hounds in an upstairs direction, (pints in hand). The birdman was missing for the Hound’s but the Mighty Cannon made a last minute appearance as super sub.
Peter Maguire elected that the Hounds go first and when round one was completed honours were even at five all.
Second round saw the Hairy Hounds drop just one question and the Shoulder snatched a Virginia Bonus, but their only other score was, when they boldly went somewhere with Scotty beaming, eventually, giving a round score of 3-6 for totals of 8-11. Round three went to the Hounds with another devastating score for the Shoulder of 3-7 and totals of 11-18.
Round four stink round, saw the Hairy Hounds zero out on the second question as Tess of the strictly come dancers played Hardy. The Muttoner’s stuck on two to give a round win to the Hosts and a half time score of Shoulder of Mutton 13 Hare and Hounds 18.
Round five saw the Hairy Hounds Receive the only completely un-answered question of the quiz but take two bonus points however, to take the round with a score of 4-8.
Round six two parters, saw the possible start of a home revival with the Shoulder of Mutton taking the round with a score of 12-10 for totals of 29-36.
Rounds seven and eight saw both teams score two sets of full houses, to give the final score of Shoulder of Mutton 45 Hare and Hounds 52. Shoulder then took the beer leg on a tie break.
Final match saw the unbeaten league leaders and Champions Radcliffe Cricket Club host last years runners up Rose and Crown Starling, with both teams experiencing a change of form in recent matches the prediction was for a close game. With teams banished to the claustrophobic naughty corner in the upstairs bar due to a non descript bladder ball game on the sky, the Rose via Captain Kieran elected to go first.
First round started well for the Rose with Bill Bryson and then picking up a bonus Borzoi when the host’s couldn’t catch the dog. Second questions were negotiated safely but the German Mastiff stumped the Rose for the second time this season on q3, and the Great Dane sneaked past the hosts by also. The Cricketers missed there own third question by thirty miles and the Rose snaffled a bonus Liverpool, Both the final questions were scored on although the Cricket club had a long discussion prior to climbing on Graham Hill, to give a round score of 4-8.
Round two individuals had categories of Religious Movements, U.S. T.V. series, Capital Cities and Misquotes. Both teams confidently grabbed the first two questions but Virginia stumped Bob for the Rose and it was caught safely with both hands by the Cricketers for a bonus, with the rest of the round answered normally the Cricketers had pulled most of the losses back with a round score of 9-6, for totals of 13-14.
Round three saw the Rose falter on two questions missing the Barbary Coast and Jeremiah, both of which were grabbed confidently for bonus points by the seemingly ominous Cricket Club for a round score of 10-4 and take the lead with totals of 23-18.
Round four stink or twist round had a theme of “on the side of the Angels” and they seemed to shine on the Rose as they scored a full house eight points thanks to Terry who played a blinder all night and Kieran’s daughter Rachel who made him a “Buffy” fan (so he say’s). The Cricketers flew to two but the Angel Choir of Lincoln Cathedral didn’t sing to them and they stuck on the two. The lead had changed hands again. Half time scores Radcliffe Cricket Club 25 Rose and Crown 26.
Round five saw only the Cowboys shoot both sides completely when alias’s or the real names of Butch Cassidy and Billy the Kid mask correct answers. Round score 6-6.
Round six two part questions saw the Cricketers miss on the first question when the Barbadian flag couldn’t be recognised , however the Rose grabbed a single bonus point without a flutter. Henry James scored a maximum four for the Rose, with both sides playing safe with two’s for the next five questions, Oscar Peterson scored another max four for the Rose via Lee, and it gave a round score of 6-13 and the Rose had consolidated their lead for totals of 37-45.
Round seven individuals had categories of Female pop singers, Overlooked Cities, British Commonwealth Governors and Magazines. Neither team had any difficulties until the final question of the round, when Punch knocked out Bob and it was picked up for a bonus point and the Cricketer’s had eaten into the visitors lead by three points with a round score of 9-6 for totals of 46-51. Round eight saw both sides score full house’s only the Oak Apple cause any slight hesitation for the Rose and the match ended with final scores of Radcliffe Cricket Club 54 Rose and Crown Starling 59. Team of the Week Rose and Crown Starling.
The Beer leg went by a point to the Cricketers team of Phil Dodd, Tony Kaye, Mark Dobson and Colin Morgan with Ken Jones as Question master.
The Stopes Tavern Elves had a week off to make toys and contemplate the Christmas form guide.

Week 14 12-12-11
Week fourteen is the final competitive week before the Christmas festivities intervene and again has some very intriguing matches to predict.
Match one has St. Mary’s B the enigma hosting the SunDial and Helen’s Harem with both sides playing well and posting similar scores last week the tea leaves predict a close match with perhaps another win for the Harem but a draw wont be far a way if form hold’s out.
Second match is a Rammy Derby with the Hairy Hounds hosting Rose and Crown Rammy with the Taylor’s Tigers purring along and improving quietly after a hiccup, this match will be close and the Hounds will want to keep pressure on the leaders if the slip at any stage and are also looking over there shoulder for the chasers, so on paper a home win but a draw will be close by……..
Third match has the Stopes Tavern Elves having the PackHorse call in and the Elves traditionally hit form about now, with a weeks rest behind them. The PackHorse slipped up last week and this match looks like it could go to the final question as a draw is the prediction or the hosts by a single point………perhaps.
Fourth match has Heap Bridge Phoenix Knights hosting the current leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club and with the leaders losing that unbeaten label last week they will be smarting and the hosts have had there confidence knocked a lot this season however if they grab a little confidence back they could run the leaders close and they may give them a scare or two.
Final match has Rose and Crown Starling hosting the Shoulder of Mutton with the Starling in sparkling form over the last couple of weeks the form guide says home win but the Shoulder have only had an odd hiccup during there matches so will run the match to the last round, a draw could be on the cards but a home win by a point.
The Rammy Cricketers are having a week off and catching Rabbit’s on the boundary.
The Christmas function at St. Mary’s Catholic Club on 19th Dec, is looming and ideas for Raffle first prizes are required from teams. If teams are not going to attend please let the Secretary know as food numbers are required please.
New Players are wanted to strengthen team squads, contact the league secretary.
