PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week 14 Feb 11th With this time of year women’s thoughts turn to love, whilst men think of going fishing and watching six nations rugby at the pub. So with that in mind there was no love lost at this weeks quiz league games. Match of the week this week was at Rose and Crown Ramsbottom who had the Swan and Railway Radcliffe B’s steaming in, a tough match to predict on paper saw Peter Taylor’s home side leading going into the last round by seven points but Alex’s fighting Swans pulled it back to win by one point in a finish that went down to the wire 38-39. Close contender for match of the week was at the Rose and Crown Bury where the Sun Dial Walmersley Rd were the visitors. The visitors took got of to a flyer and built a ten point lead by round three , the gap was held until round six when the Ian’s Openshaws Rose team bloomed a little and although the home side won the final three rounds it was too little to late. The SunDial had Helen Lee’s mum playing for them and Roses are always a good gift to mum’s. The score 34-41 to this weeks team of the week SunDial. Another excellent match was the visit of Pack Horse Affetside to Radcliffe Cricket Club with the visitors in a run of good form, and the league leading home team hoping to bounce back after there first defeat of the season last week, it proved to be a very competitive match but Phil Dodd’s Cricketers managed to take the match points with a 50-44 win. Heap Bridge Social Club have had an excellent run of form recently and the team of Neville Chadwick, Steve Henry, Derek Lord and Barrie Birch were hoping to catch the Rose and Crown Starling off guard. The visitors took the first round to open a slight lead and consolidated it during the first individual round where the only failure was Kieran Goldsbrough, in a high scoring third round (3-2) the home side gained a point back, although the league secretary made a slight error for the visitors which may have cost them a couple of points perhaps, but with points shared for the fourth the scores at the half 15-21. The visitors increased the lead thanks to Anne Thompson and the legend Wally Warrington in rounds five and six, no thanks to another faux pas by the Secretary who didn’t give a Shastri at this point. The Phoenix lads took a full house in the individual round and Derek Lord took a bonus to make Kieran feel a right (Jack) Benny again, and put some pressure on the visitors but then couldn’t repeat it in the final round. Score on an entertaining night 39-49 to the Rose. Final match was at the Swan and Railway Radcliffe A’s hosting Stopes Tavern where John Harris’s home team talked themselves out of a few points but still had an enjoyable evening, however Paul Gardener’s Taverners ran away with the points with a final score of 21-42. Week 15 Monday Feb 18th Match of the week is a joint affair this week firstly the Radcliffe derby at the Swan and Railway where the B’s host Phil Dodd’s league leading Cricketer’s and the game at the Pack Horse Affetside where the Rose Bury are the visitors. The match at the Swan could go down to the wire again for the hosts if they play on top form and must give a little concern for the leaders as this match is a “could lose” game in there title quest but if the Cricketers get off to a good start they won’t look back and any win will do. The Rose Bury’s climb to the popular PackHorse will be sweeter if they get back to winning ways but with both teams playing well this season it will be nip and tuck all match and a definite winner is hard to see. The home side may just edge it on last weeks form. The Rose Starling have Rose Rammy visiting and will be hoping for a reverse of the loss in the first half of the season to keep title hopes alive. In recent weeks Peter Taylor’s visitors have not been in the best of form and suffered some surprising defeats but they will try and complete the double against the Rose. However the Rose Stlg have been consistent since the first match and they may prove just too strong this time, it may be close though. SunDial have Swan A’s visiting and although the A’s have been playing well they haven’t had any rub of the green all season but the Sun Dial have started to play very well recently and I can’t see them losing this. An entertaining night though. Stopes Tavern play host to the Phoenix night’s tour bus this week and Paul’s Taverners could be on the wrong end of the result but it is normally this time of year that the Taverners start to wake and put together a run, so the Phoenix lads have to be very wary. Close but the visitors to steal the points. If the organiser of the recent Bury Samaritan’s Quiz would like to contact the representative for the charity quiz winners Heap Bridge Social club they have a proposal that may be to there advantage. A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side that start having free weeks shortly.
