PHIL'S COMMENTS
The return of Ski Sunday on the BBC, was matched by Skies heavily laden with Snow in Bury this Monday, and snow fell at most if not all venue’s. Players were almost snowed in but unluckily that didn’t quite happen, all matches this week were very competitive and relatively close in snuggly warm venues.
The match of the week in a tough week to chose was the game at Rose and Crown Ramsbottom who came from behind to just win by only one point against a resurgent Pack Horse Affetside team in the battle of the hill tops, with a score of 36-35.
Close game also at the Phoenix nights venue Heap Bridge Social Club who had the Swan and Railway B’s gliding in, with the Swan’s building up a rich vein of form traditionally this time of year for a cup campaign and the hosts the Phoenix lads posting top score last week both teams competed well and only at the end did the Swan’s secure victory with a match score of 35-41. Team of the week Swan B’s.
Stopes Taverners made the journey to the excellent new venue of the Hare & Hounds, hoping their current rich vein of form would continue?? In what is always a close & entertaining game, Stopes elected to go 1st & honours were even after 2 rounds at 11-11. With similar close scoring in Rd 3 the game would remain at 16-17 in favour of the H&H at half time after both teams drew a blank in Rd4. R5 saw H&H pull away & create a 6 point advantage scoring 7 points to Stopes’ meagre 2. With the points difference being a retrievable margin to overcome, a cautious approach was required, when the temptation may have been to gamble in R6. Stopes conservative tactics proved to be fruitful & a 10-4 scoreline put Stopes back on even terms at 28-28. A nervous R7 saw no change in the friendly tit for tat scoring again level at 5-5, leaving a nail biting last round to try & separate the teams. The pendulum swung in the favour of the visitors & despite Stopes ignorance of all things related to the Koran they managed to squeeze out 6 points too H&H’s 2 for a final score of Stopes 39 – Hare & Hounds 35.
The Sun Dial Walmersly Rd have been struggling recently, with new arrivals spoiling there lineup by taking team members away from their duties, so it was with some trepidation that we looked at this fixture and expected, on recent results, the league leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club to run away with the match, but it is obvious that the Sun Dial have a team of fighters in there midst and they truly made a game of it. Almost were awarded team of the week with there loss of 45-32.
Final match was held at Swan and Railway where the hosts, the A’s were up for upsetting the form book, and taking points off second placed Rose and Crown Starling. With Jayne Rowley preparing for a comeback to the team soon, by question mastering, the home side of John Harris, John Heenan, Julie Keenan and Alan Smith got off to a slow start and fell three points behind after round one, a level individual round of five apiece failed to pull the lead back but an excellent full house and bonus point to boot saw the home side draw level after round three. With round four being the stick or twist round, the visitors failed to score after a tough second question forced an error by “Siberian” Kieran Goldsbrough with the hosts scoring two, that became the lead at the half. Round five saw the Swans slip behind again dissapointingly from which they were never to recover as progressively mavis’s winter strength tonic took effect and points fell away. A disastrous final round for both teams saw the final score edge up to 33-42 but it played a lot closer. The supersub’s bench namely the legend Wally had an amazing beer round considering his consumption levels of mavis’s brew and almost scored a full house thrashing both teams on the night.
Jan26th week 15
This week all are predicted to be very close matches and it could be a tough night for a few of the pacesetters.
Rose Starling host Rose Rammy in what could be match of the week, with Rammy in third place in the table and Starling in second the war of the roses could be an apt title the hosts cannot afford a slip up but Peter’s cat’s are purring again a close score will be a certainty with the hosts just shading it .......possibly!
Swan and Railway B’s host the leaders in the Radcliffe Derby and the Cricketers may be in for a very tough match against last weeks team of the week, and an upset is a definite possibility. Prediction if the questions run as tricky as last week, a draw is on the cards or a close win either way this one!!!!!
Pack Horse have the Hairy Hounds meeting at home and with both teams knowing each other so well the friendly rivalry will be highly tense both teams are having a mixed season and both teams could win this but the Hounds may just be the bigger pack on the night.
Sun Dial host the Swan and Railway A’s with both teams playing well this could go either way with a full team the hosts may just have the edge but the Swans are running into a little form so the dial team may just falter.
Final match is the visit of Heap Bridge Phoenix Nights to the inform Stopes Tavern, if this was early season definite away win but with it now being post xmas this is a strong match of the week candidate. There will be few points in it if both play to form and a draw is strongly fancied also but if I had to choose, the home side may be a point or two on top.
