PHIL'S COMMENTS

With all Teams boyant after the big weekend thaw had cleared the pesky white stuff away so any slip ups were the teams own fault this week and there were keen contests on show.
First match was the visit of Barney and the Harem of the Sundial Walmersley Rd to the Runaway Leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club. The vistors gave a good account of themselves but Phil Dodd’s Cricketers are aiming for a clean sweep this season and took charge of the match running out 59-38 winners.
The Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook had a derby game against Ramsbottom Cricket Club; Yosemite Sam has posted an evening’s reveiw.
Rammy Crickets bowled in as opponents for the first time at The Hare and Hounds. The Buddy Holly Boys took a 2 point lead in the 1st round and never looked back. They increased their lead to 5 points by half-time, losing only the stick or twist round. Second half was similar, Rammy CC took 2 rounds and drew one, the Hairy Hounds managed to win the two parters by 1 point. Final result Hairy Hounds 43 Rammy CC 50. Rammy also took the beer leg by 1 point. Dave Wright distinguished himself by only being a year out on the date of Henry II's birth in the not required tiebreak question. A gorgeous warming chilli was then enjoyed by all.
Heap Bridge Social Club had Paul Gardners Stopes Tavern Elves visiting the Phoenix Nights and in a close game the elves look to be over there unusual post seasonal slump, the match would have been up for match of the week in any other round of matches but this week has overflowed with close games, I hope Neville is over his recent illness and back to form but the Elves are after the trophies this season and just squeezed the win 45-49.
The match at the PackHorse Affetside was a thriller as predicted, in the lowest scoring match on the night, points turned out to be tight but in a game that both teams were leading at some point, Sue and the Pack Lads Christmas training turned up trumps and just managed to overcome Peter Taylor’s fighting Tigers. Joint Match of the week with a final score of 37-35.
The final match this week had the Rose and Crown Starling visiting the Swan and Railway A and what was until this week a favourite fixture for the visitors because it is always an entertaining night and it was no exception on Monday night. The visiting team was predicted to win but the author had been watching form and knew John Harris’s team had shown much improved form of late and a slight suspicion of a surprise for the visitors was not unexpected. The visitors fielded a team of Kieran, Lee, The legendary Wally and Bob for the evening and decided in the time honoured tradition to go first in the first half, with Julie Keenan as questionmaster the evening’s entertainment began.Question 1 was missed by the home side and the Rose gained a gymnastic bonus but then tumbled with there own question in this category which wasn’t picked up, score at the end of round 6-7.Round two individual, now did I hear right, when the choices were announced, The Legend picks Boney M !!! Question 1 Boney M is passed over by the Legend and picked up by the Swan’s, but then there question is passed back, is redemption at hand, did the disco legend redeem his error, nope! the ghost of Rasputin strikes again, Question 2 has Bob befuddled and the Swans score a maximum three on Soap pubs.Question 3 was the difficult subject item on religion both teams dip out and question 4 saw the Rose and Lee score three on Animal Rights, round score 4-3 to the Swans, 10-10. Round three saw the Rose pet available United supporter FAIL with there new shirt sponsor, mentioning no names, eh “K,”with of course the inevitable result when your playing the Stretford end, the Swans pick up the bonus. The Swans fail with the Titanic clash and the Rose can’t level the score, so 7-6 to the Swans and 17-16. Round Four Stick or twist, the Rose go well but just don’t take the risk with the eight pointer, for a safe four. The Swans stall at two ruined by Joan Bull. Halftime score 19-20. Tight match with the Rose feeling the pressure.Round 5 saw the Swans miss the boat with High Seas and Van Damme but work, a little "enterprise" to there advantage to score five and the Rose lose there enterprise and a thousand bomber’s but pick up the van damme for five also. 24-25. Round Six four or two saw both teams play safe until the third question and then both scored four whilst relaxing with there ding a ling. Safe two, to test the metal on the last saw points even again at ten each.34-35.Round Seven, now a week ago this was the Swans downfall against the Hairy Hounds a week on and lesson learnt, the Swans dropped only one individual question to The Legend but picked up two bonus points for Ilkley moor (Boooob you live halfway there)and Kieran’s fish fingers, Captain Bird’s eye is dissapointed.Swan's score eight points on the round and with The Legend the only scorer with American states the Rose score three, the Swans turn the lead round and gain a crucial four point advantage.Last round saw both teams score there own points until the last question the Swans drop there tea and the Rose picked up the Assam bonus but it was too late, the last question on the bay series baseball was dropped by the Rose and not picked up and the round score was 6-7. The Swans had played excellently to take the match, the first time they had beaten the Rose on home Ground, they thoroughly deserve team of the week and a share in match of the week. The victorious team consisted of John Harris (winning Captain but not gloating), Charles Donnelly(slightly gloating), John Heenan (winning Vice Captain but not gloating either) and Nigel Saunders (The understudy who wasn’t gloating either) and of course Julie (who wasn’t gloating at all) and Mavis, who’s Tonic didn’t gloat at all and finally when it was all over the visitors were fed delicious hot potato’s .....and felt like a certain troop in Knowsley Safari Park. A good night was had by all as normal; oh did I not mention the score ......48-45.
Swan B were nowhere to be seen on Monday thank god!

Week 15Monday 25th Jan 2010
The fixtures this week all look close matches and any one of them could be match of the week.
Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook re-visit the Swanery at Radcliffe again for the second time in three weeks, to this time play Swan and Railway B’s. With the B’s having a sabattical last week they will be raring to go and the Hairy Hounds will want to get back on track after a defeat last week. A close win for the home side is predicted but a draw could be on the cards.
Ramsbottom Cricket club have the Rose and Crown Starling floating in, floods and weather permitting, and with last weeks defeat playing on there mind the Rose will want to grab the points at this 2 nd Place contest but the Cricketers had a good win themselves and are having a spell a good settled form helping them steadily climb the table again. A home win is predicted but it will be close.
Stopes Tavern Elves have the Swan and Railway A rolling in and with last weeks history making win still fresh in the memory they have a very good chance in this contest, the elves seem to have got over the post christmas blues and posted a good win last week themselves so this one could go to the wire...... Home win but only just.
PackHorse host the unbeaten Cricketers of Radcliffe this week and could run the Cricketers close if Sue has fed the lads the encyclopedia ration but the Cricketers have virtually sown the league up and will want to remain unbeaten. Away win.
Final Match is the Rose and Crown Rammy who have the Phoenix Knights of Heap Bridge Social Club visiting and Taylor’s tigers will be smarting after last weeks epic battle after which they just missed out by one answer, prediction is a draw but either side may just sneak it.
Barney and the Sundial Harem are resting for one week only.

New challenges and players are always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side. Contact details along with the league tables are on this website.
