PHIL'S COMMENTS

Happy New Year to All. With the weather ravaged Christmas Festivities over and the deep freeze slowly thawing, the Bury Quiz League reconvened for the new year with the exception of two teams who played the outstanding fixture on the list during the break and some shock results were on this results sheet this week.
First week back and complaints were flooding in over the questions leading into favouring and biasing one side, depending on whether you went first or second and one implausible first question or rather the answer on the stick or twist round that would have been better showing brackets.
The outstanding fixture on the list was at the SunDial Walmersly Rd, this was caused by the accidental loss of questions due to a change of landlady at the venue when the fixture was due to be played, the match took place last Monday the 3rd January when the Knights of Heap Bridge made there shortest journey of the season and in a close fought and enjoyable contest that had some extremely confusing questions on deep space according to Helen, the Knights overcame the Harem in the final round to win with a score of 30-33. Match of the week and team of the week obviously.
First match up this week was the visit of St. Mary’s Radcliffe OscAr’s to the PackHorse Affetside. The visitors had notched up their first win of the season just before the break and continued in that vein after the break by overcoming the Packhorse with a score of 36-44 have the Christmas Radcliffe fairies moved from the Taverners to St. Mary’s? Or has Danny Boyle thrown an arm in? See Below.
The Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village hosted the Stopes Tavern Elves this week and in a close match the Elves who traditionally start the year hot off the blocks, had there night ruined when according to Paul Gardner the Taverners snatched defeat from the Jaws of Victory obviously in the last round when the Shoulder grabbed the win with a 48-44 score.
Both of these matches were in contention for weekly awards but they were pipped on the night by another match.
The match at St. Mary’s Radcliffe where the B’s were hosting the Phoenix knights of Heap Bridge Social Club and it proved to be a very close contest with both teams scoring freely throughout the game and this match almost got the match of the week award also but just missed out as did the hosts with a final score of 54-60. Team of the week award does go to the Knights though.
Close contender for team of the week was the Radcliffe Cricket Club who are also scoring heavily in recent matches and they carried on that rich vein of form when Rose and Crown Ramsbottom visited. Taylor’s Tigers were up against the odds from the start and couldn’t hold on to the Cricketer’s as they piled on the score and ended up 64-34 victors.
The SunDial hosted the visiting Ramsbottom Cricket Club and in a frustrating match for the hosts the Harem scored well but could not overcome the choice of questions and both teams agreed the match should have been closer. The Harem were bowled over and all out with a score of 40-49.
Match of the week this week went to the contest at the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook where the league leaders Rose and Crown Starling were the visitors. Yosemite Sam has the honour of reporting first:-
In the return of the quiz after a break that seemed “like forever”, there was a hotly disputed contest at the Hare and Hounds that saw the current league leaders Rose and Crown Starling being the visitors. In a night of many wrong choices and bottling the hairy Hounds threw away at least 11 points on India, Ibiza, Two-Face and Brainwashing. Rose Starling had three stabs on Stoneface and none was great but proved very costly. A total blank by the Hairy Hounds in round seven gave a score of 37 each going into the last round. The Mighty Cannon came up with a bonus of Bougainvillea named after the French navigator which made the one point vive le difference.
The announcement of the result of Hare and Hounds 44 Rose and Crown 43 was accompanied by Manfred Mann’s Earth Bands 1976 album (The Roaring Silence- ED).The visitors took the beer leg and Lee walked away with the tie break cash by knowing where to put his Mon where his Mouth was.
And now a word from the visitors, with the Rose and Crown only managing a full team just two hours before the start as other commitments and work getting in the way thanks must given to Jayne who attended a junior football league meeting and gave up a league managers meeting to play and to Lee who had to re-arrange his time at the last minute. Someone else decided on the night to go first after seriously thinking of going second and he ended up regretting that decision later. First round saw punts and Klingon proving no problem but Star trek Jordy’s roots character provided a choice of two for the Rose and they blindly went for the chicken option when top man Mr Kinte was the answer and was picked up for a bonus, the tennis players double faulted for both teams to give a first round score of 7-4. Round two individuals saw a full house from the Rose with only a Cornish Sardine being dropped by the Hairy Hounds which was netted as a bonus by the Rose for a level total of 13’s. Round Three saw the visitor’s drop two answers with Rabbit Fur Island and …..Yes you presumed right Livingstone proving difficult and neither scored a bonus. The Hairy Hounds dropped only the headless last question and the Rose Raliegh’d round to grab a bonus for a round score of 6-5. Now round four stink or twist proved a bit of a problem for many teams on the night but only for the teams going first as Buster Keatons stoneface was known by most but not the “great” part, a difficult one point question for this round. So the Rose blanked the round, however picked up all other answers on the “talk through”. The Hairy Hounds sailed through to the Batman question but was un-certain about opponent Two-face and stuck on four.
Halftime scoreline Hare and Hounds 23 Rose and Crown 18.
Round five proved to be a disaster for the Rose, (and other teams) all there own questions were dropped, (did anyone get frankies dad?) however none were tellingly picked up as bonus points by the Hairy Hounds who scored on their first three but dropped the last to score a bonus for the Rose a round score of 6-1. Round Six two part questions saw a maximum four for the Rose on the first question with all other questions going for two points for match totals of 37-29 to the Hounds. Round Seven individuals saw the Hairy Hounds blank all there questions with only one bonus “Munich” offered by the Rose that was missed also, the Rose scored heavily this round scoring eight points, to level up the scores going into the last round at 37’s. Round Eight saw the Hairies miss the first answer of Labellia with the Rose also missing the bonus by answering note Bougainvillea. The Rose picking up there first, the Hairies answered the second then the Rose talked themselves out of Bougainvillea and answered a telling Clematis incorrectly which the Hairies snapped up for a bonus point with the Round going question for question the atmosphere was tense and the visiting Roses especially someone else, didn’t realise the questions had ended and was wanting more when the final score was announced by Jill to stunned silence. Excellently contested match won well by the hosts.
The teams that are yet to pay there subs for the year could they please provide payment to Margaret Chamberlain Rose Rammy at the earliest opportunity please.

Week 15 17-1-2011
With the league now wide open again after the Rose and Crown Starlings defeat last week, matches now take on a significant meaning for the top of the table sides but all the teams this season are capable of beating any and each other, so leading positions may change considerably from week to week.
First game this week is a Ramsbottom Derby with the Cricket Club hosting the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village, this one the form guide says is a probable draw but if the Shoulder make any error’s the Cricket club will stump them and vica versa.
Top match, on last weeks scoring alone, should be the visit of Radcliffe Cricket Club to the Phoenix Knights venue at Heap Bridge Social Club, if the knights play as well this week this could be close and a home win would not be a surprise, but the form guide says the Cricket Club however it will be closer than recent scores posted by the visitors.
St. Mary’s OscArs Radcliffe host the Hairy Hounds fresh and Buoyant from last weeks victory over the current leaders, the visitors may look to be favourites but the home side have at last crossed the winning line twice in a row, after playing well all season, so this wont be easy for the visitors. An Away win but an upset for the Hounds is not out of the question.
Stopes Tavern Elves have the SunDial and Helens Harem visiting the Elves have been up and down in form recently and the Harem cannot cross the finishing line losing narrowly form wise another close contest in prospect and a draw is close by but the Elves by a point.
Rose and Crown Rammy have St. Mary’s B’s visiting and this looks a nailed on draw as both sides are up and down this season Taylor’s Tigers will be looking to recover from last week’s mauling and IF St. Mary’s do hold form they will just snatch the victory but only by the narrowest of margins.
Final Game this week see the league leaders Rose and Crown host the PackHorse Affetside in there local derby and the PackHorse have fallen away form wise so the cards say a home win but it will not be an easy match for the Hosts and they will have to be on form to win.
