PHIL'S COMMENTS
Web Week 14 12th Dec 2011
May I apologise for the late posting of this report but I have had some little illnesses to overcome.
The fourteenth week of the season turned out to be wet, and windy and the last competition in the league before the Christmas break proved unlucky for a couple of favoured teams on the night.
First match to report in was the match at Heap Bridge Social Club who were hosting Radcliffe Cricket Club, with the league leaders smarting after some negative results, the Phoenix Knights were hoping to catch them on the hop and turn there own fortunes around, the hope rapidly faded as the league leaders ended there year on a positive note with a 36-52 win.
Second Match had the SunDial Walmersley Rd visit the Christmas hosts and the enigma St. Mary’s Radcliffe B’s, the B’s are challenging for honours this season and consolidated this with a 50-37 victory.
Third match was at the home of the Elves with Stopes Tavern hosting the PackHorse Affetside and it turned out to be the match of the week with the hosts hitting top form as they overcome the visitors 51-46.
Fourth match was a Ramsbottom Derby with Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook hosting the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom, Yosemite Sam reports on the match:-
Rose Rammy wandered down the hill and up to the Brook. Rose opted to go second and the Hairy Hounds gained a 6-5 lead as the Rose copped the two unanswered questions of the round. Round two saw the Hairy Hounds increase their lead with Bony Hits whilst the Rose stemmed the flow with Historic tales from the Welsh riverbank. Round two score 5-4 for 11-9 totals. Round three saw the Hairy Hounds further increase there lead with a full house and a bonus to take the round 9-4. Round four stink round had a close theme when both teams scored sod all, making the halfway totals, Hare and Hounds 20 Rose and Crown 13.
Round Five saw the Hares racing for the finish when they took the round 10-4 for totals of 30-17. Round six and seven saw the Rose stop the losses but only managing to draw both of the rounds at 8 and 7 apiece respectively. And the Rose Rammy finally managed to win a round and regain some pride by taking the final round 3-7 but it was too little too late in terms of the match. Final score Hare and Hounds 48 Rose and Crown Ramsbottom 39.
The Hounds managed to sneak the beer leg by a single point too, best answer of the evening was from J.C. who guessed that one of his minions was nicknamed “The Vaulting Vicar”.
Final match was the Rose and Crown Starling who had the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village visiting. Due to booked Pub festivities the teams were confined to the old quiz site of the window alcove and with the hosts calling on Fay Heenan to read the questions. The Shoulder elected to go first and both teams negotiated the first questions successfully, second question saw the Rose miss Samuel Johnson’s marriage (needed Wally for this one as he probably went in 1735), luckily it wasn’t picked up. The second marriage of the round was also missed by both teams when Shelley’s marriage went unattended. With the Rose missing the Straits of Messina and the bonus also went begging the scores were 4-6. Round two individuals had categories of Cup Final Hits, Long Bones, Welsh History and Riverbank Cities. Cup final hits was a category too far for the hosts and the visitors notched up a bonus as well as there own. The hosts dropped further behind when the Riverbank cities turned out to be a right Bucharest, luckily it wasn’t picked up but the visitors had hit a full house and a bonus for a score of 4-9, and totals of 8-15. Round three saw the hosts grab a bonus on the first questions with Whiskey Rebellion and only miss Shania Twin’s real name which wasn’t picked up and the lead increased again as the round score was 6-7. Round four stink or twist round had an “Ordinal” theme. With both teams making magnificent efforts after negotiating the first questions only to score big fat zero’s (as per almost every other side on the night), the halftime score was Rose and Crown 14 Shoulder of Mutton 22.
Round five turned out to be a disaster for the hosts scoring only with the vaulting Vicar and only due to the team Captain missing other points, whereas the Shoulder side of Paul Rumbold, Steve Greenhalgh, Alan Rogers and Stuart Birtwell grabbed two bonus points along with a full house for a score of 2-10. Round six two part round saw the hosts wanting to score heavily but immediately they dropped the first to a bonus single point when Virginia Waters raced by. Both teams then played safe except the Shoulder dropped the third question surprisingly and the Rose grabbed a bonus Romeo for a point to tie the round at sevens, for totals of 23-39. Round seven individuals had categories of Manhattan Films, Sporting Knights, Pussy’s and Literary Sequel’s and the host’s at last hit form with a full house and a bonus after the Shoulder missed Bobby Charlton and then also missed Life at the top which went bonus less, round score 9-4 the first round won by the hosts all night. Round eight saw the hosts win their second round of the evening dropping just one question on the origin of Hick but picking up a bonus Max with an answer from the Hart to Hart, the Shoulder dropped a west wing with Josiah Bartlett but the Rose had hit form too late to save the match and the round score of 7-4 made little impression on the overall score in the match of 39-47 and a win for the Shoulder and Team of the week.
The Cricketers of Ramsbottom had a spare week and are hopefully looking at a Calendar to re-arrange matches.

Week 15 16-1-12
Week fifteen is the first full competitive week of the New Year and it will be interesting to see which teams have overindulged during the festive period and rusted slightly if any has.
Match one is the top match on paper and it sees the enigma St. Mary’s B visiting league leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club, Phil Dodd’s Cricketers will be wanting a winning start to the new year but the B’s will be gunning for a good start also, a win for the B’s will make the league more interesting and the prediction is for an away win ……just.
Second match is war of the Roses part two Rose and Crown Rammy host this one with the visiting Starlings slipping up before Christmas thanks to the Captain playing when he shouldn’t of, he may not be fit to play this one, thankfully, his team say. Taylor’s Tigers hope to return to winning ways. A draw won’t be far away but the prediction is for an away win …… just. (unless someone else has to play).
Third match has the Stopes Tavern Elves visiting the SunDial, with Helens Harem playing well this could be another close contest but the Elves are in season and an away win, just, again is the prediction.
Fourth match has PackHorse Affetside hosting the Ramsbottom Cricket Club and with the Cricketers hitting top form and are making a concerted effort for honours this season in a quietly done way, this is another candidate for top match and the away side may just have the edge but a draw won’t be far away.
Final match has the Shoulder of Mutton hosting the Heap Bridge Social Club and although the tables show both teams bottom of the list, the teams are both playing well but not having the luck of the draw and that could be the result. But the Shoulder may sneak it if they are still on a high after beating Starling.
The Hare and Hounds are having a week off and stocking up for this years real ale festivals..
Thanks too all who went to the Christmas do and to Margaret who had to step somewhat into the breach when the Secretary had to cry off.
New Players are wanted to strengthen team squads, contact the league secretary.
A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side. Contact details along with the league tables are on the website at www.buryquizleague.co.uk
