PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week 15 Feb 18th With global warming compressing the seasons the weather is feeling more like mad March, and the scores in the Quiz league this week was all over the place in sympathy. Match of the week this week has been a difficult choice with the unusual occurrence of two drawn matches. The match at Stopes Tavern where Paul Gardener’s team hosted the Heap Bridge Social Club was the pick, with such a relative high scoring game that went down to the last question again. The Phoenix nights lads who are gathered together from the far reaches of Rochdale in some cases to play are banishing there fabled away blues this season. The score which equals any top score on the night was a superb 49-49 draw. Team of the week Stopes Tavern who are starting a late surge are they?. Just pipped for match of the week was the game at the Pack Horse Affetside with the Rose and Crown Bury tying up at the rail. With a game that either side could have won and a last round comeback, this game also ended up as a draw at 41-41. The match at the Sundial Walmersley Road, where the Swan and Railway Radcliffe A’s were the visitors was a very competitive game also, with Swans John Heenan travelling far on the night (thanks John) unnessararily so as it turned out, it may have been the key to good form as the Swan A’s pushed the in form SunDial team all the way including a full house on the last round and ALMOST grabbed a surprise win succumbing by just 4 points in a 39-35 score line. The Radcilffe Derby between Swan B’s and the league leading Cricket Club did not turn out to be the close affair predicted, with the Swan’s freezing on the night in the glare of Phil Dodd’s teams highlights, the Cricketers ran away to a final score of 31-49. Final match this week was the war of the Roses at Rose and Crown Starling where Rose and Crown Ramsbottom were the visitors slight panic before the match as the questions were at the wrong venue hence Swan John’s travels but the visitors were on the ball and picked them up. With Peter Taylor resting this week it was his brother Ian skippering the side with Margaret Chamberlain, Sue Booth and Martin Baggolly providing the back up knowledge to try and get a double win over Rose Starling. The visitors didn’t get away to a good start when choosing to go an unusual second with the questions and immediately fell eight points behind after round one and with tea total Kieran failing along with the legend Saint Wally in the individuals things looked down for the home side but the Rose Rammy still lost another two points. Round three saw the visitors score heavily with a full house and bonuses and the home team have a Jurrasic ‘mare with only Peter Scudamore riding a winner for them but an eight pointer in the stick or twist against a two saw the home side to a half time score of 25-17. Round five had the Rose Stlg pull a further four points away but two points were recovered by Rammy in round six. The individual round seven had the home side reeling as only the Legend climbed the mountain state Montana and a full house and bonuses for Ian and Sue saw the gap narrow to just two points going into the last round. The home side eased to a full house in the last round though and the visitors scored only with the sound of silence ironically in the “wake” of the night. Final score with Lee Sawbridge and Bob Selby also playing for the home team along with Kieran Goldsbrough and the Legend Wally Warrington was 49-41 to the Rose Starling. Week 16 Monday Feb 25th Match of the week for this week, is the local derby at the PackHorse Affetside where Rose and Crown Starling are the visitors with both sides being in form this will be very close but the visiting Rose are in a must win situation to keep pressure on the leading Cricketers so it may be a nervy affair, however an away win but only just. Cricketers host Rose Rammy, on there day the visiting Rammy side could overturn the leading Cricketers but with a recent run of indifferent form, Phil Dodd’s Cricketers may prove to be just too strong but any slip could prove costly for them. Swan A’s have Rose Bury calling and after last weeks round trip the Swan’s may want to cruise the canal for an hour before the match if it brings them luck as well as Mavis’s tonic but the visitors are a team challenging for third spot and will be difficult to overcome if on form. Final match this week is Sun Dial at home to Stopes Tavern with both teams now playing at last, with a bit of consistent form this was a contender for match of the week. So with that in mind this will be a very close game and it may go down to the last round again. Another drawn match is not out of the question. The Swan B’S are licking there wounds on a free week and the Phoenix lads have parked there tour bus also for a free week. A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their knowledge against a regular league side that are having free weeks from now till seasons end.
