PHIL'S COMMENTS
|
This week we start with some sad news on the sudden death of Roger Amer whilst on holiday. Roger had been an enthusiastic and feisty member of both the SunDial and Rose and Crown Rammy teams. He had a good many friends and colleagues in the league and our condolences are passed to his family.
The matches this week were as close as predicted, with most games laying claims for match of the week, with one exception and after more than a year at the top of the quiz league the Radcliffe Cricket club have relinquished there grip on the top spot. We start with what has to be match of the week the Radcliffe Derby between Swan and Railway b’s hosting the Cricket Club in what was a nip and tuck match all the way the in form home side took on Phil Dodd’s leaders and with the lead changing hands throughout the night, forced a draw with a score of 40-40. Team of the week again Swan B’s. The second placed Rose and Crown Starling hosted the war of the roses this week with the visit of Rose and Crown Ramsbottom. The match started off badly for the visitors falling six point behind the hosts who scored a full house with two bonus’s but straight away Peter Taylor’s team of himself, Margaret Chamberlain, Ian Taylor and skipper on the night Martin Baggoley, hit back with a full house and bonus in the individuals this form carried through the third round to cut the lead to just one point going into the stick or twist fourth round with the home side missing out the lead swung the visitors way by a point at the halfway mark 22-23.The second half started well for the home side again, when the lead again changed hands with the difference being two points. The sixth round saw the home side score heavily thanks to the legend Wally Warrington but the visitors still only drop two points in a 14-12 round. The final individual round was almost a disaster for the home side with only the legend scoring full points and Lee Sawbridge a bonus, the gap closed to just one point going into the final round but with the home side gaining a two point advantage the Rose Starling won 50-47 in an excellent game by both teams to take over as league leaders (but for how long is the cry!). The odd exception to the close games occurred at the Packhorse Affetside who had the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook calling, despite a commando attack by the home side the visitors pressed home a form advantage helped by John Cannon’s knowledge of bottoms and Peter Maguires decision to go second and ended up winning by twelve points in a raucous night 36-48. The SunDial hosted the Swan a’s and in another close encounter managed to come off second best again as another swop the leader match took place final score 32-38. Final game of the week was another match of the week contender. Could a resurgent Stopes Tavern continue their seasonal charge against the Heap Bridge side who have enjoyed rich pickings in past seasons. Stopes were put into Bat 1st & made the most of the imbalance in the parity of questions to take an early lead & after 3 rounds held a 4 point advantage going into the final round of the half 17-13. Stopes exercised caution (or no Bottle!!) in taking 4 points when we lacked the courage of our convictions to go with Mexico on the final Graham Greene question. The Phoenix lads fell at the 1st hurdle, the inclusion of the word “comedian” proving a distraction in the search for the answer of Lenny Henry!!!!???? Half way Stopes 21-13 HBSC As is often the case, this proved to be another game of 2 halves & the pendulum quickly swung back to the HBSC lads & the 8 point deficit was quickly eroded too 2pts by the end of Rd5. Stopes drew a blank on the 1st question of Rd6 but 2 of the 4 pointers ensured Stopes took the honours - 10 points to 9 to lead 33 – 30 with 2 rounds to go. The Phoenix lads were now surely ruing the additional 4 points they let slip through their fingers in this round!!!! The low scoring continued in the 2nd Individual round in favour of HBSC 5 to 4. Stopes took a very slender lead into a nervous final round & even lower scoring saw Stopes edge home 39 - 37 to maintain their 100% record in 2009. Feb 2nd week 16 This weeks matches are again going to be tough for the league leaders first match on the list is the probable match of the week Radcliffe Cricketers host third place Rose Rammy, with the Cricketers drawing and losing the top spot they will not want to drop further points as the title is still wide open looking at the fixtures, but Rose Rammy played well at Starling last week and if their form holds will be gunning for a win this week to consolidate third place, close and on form, an away win, controversially, just!!!! Second match this week is the Swan A’s hosting the Hairy Hounds with both teams enjoying success last week this could go close, but the favourites are the hounds to win but not by much!!! Pack Horse have new leaders Rose Starling climbing up the hill for the derby match, with Mike Pinder aiming to shoot the Roses title aspirations down, this will be close but the form says the visitors and an enjoyable night for all. Final match is at the SunDial with the form side Stopes Tavern visiting with Paul Gardners side being unbeaten this year this may be a tough task for the Dial side but it will be closer than the form book says. The Swan B and Heap Bridge Phoenix lads are on a free week. |
