PHIL'S COMMENTS

Miserable Monday, the supposed worst Monday of the year turned out to be true for certain teams in the league this week.
First game report of the week was the match at Stopes Tavern where the SunDial Walmersly Rd were the visitors and it appears as though the Elves have really lost there seasonal mojo, as Helens Harem made it across the finishing line this week in a close finish with the Elves Paul Gardner saying they must try harder score 41-43.
Ramsbottom Cricket Club hosted the Rammy Derby this week when the Shoulder of Mutton made the short journey to the riverside venue and in another closely fought match the Shoulder have appeared to hit a run of form and carried on there new year winning run with a familiar score for them and a 44-48 victory. Yet again both of these first matches were in contention for match of the week awards but yet again they were pipped on the night by another match.
The Rose and Crown Ramsbottom had the St. Mary’s Radcliffe B’s visiting and it looks as though Taylor’s Tigers are in a post Christmas slump of form and the B’s have recovered their own early season free scoring form as the tigers succumbed heavily again with a 37-52 defeat or are they playing for the cup bandit average again! Team of the week St Mary’s B’s.
The narrow league leaders Rose and Crown Starling hosted their local derby against the PackHorse Affetside and it proved to be a tough close fought contest which had the hosts very worried up until the final questions.
The PackHorse team of Mike and Sue Pinder, Joe Walk and James Perkin elected to go first and both teams successfully negotiated the first two questions, the Pack then couldn’t recall Patty Hearst’s name and it was picked as a bonus, the hosts failed on there final operatic question on the Daughter of the Regiment’s composer Donizetti which also failed to net a bonus point for a round score of 7-6. The promising start for the hosts didn’t last long as disaster ensued in the first individual round two with both sides missing there own first questions on U.S. City nicknames although the Rose picked up a bonus New Orleans however neither side had heard of Los Angeles Big O nickname, both Sue for the visitors and Terry for the hosts picked up the Russian cuisine category points and Mike snapped up all the Card Game points for the PackHorse, the animated T.V. shows Points went to the PackHorse courtesy of James Perkin and the visitors had cleaned up on the round with a 3-8 score for totals of 10-14. Round three saw the hosts hit back to level the scores by only missing out with Charles Dickens Bleak House but picking up the bonus points on the PackHorses missed questions about peristalsis and Russell Crowe’s Rock groups to level the score at 18’s. Round Four Stink or twist had the Packhorse stumped only by the requirement of Peter Schaffer’s full name and not the surname alone to stick on four and the Rose were stumped by the impossibly named Royal households of Denmark and Norway to also stick on four points for halftime totals of 22-22.
Round Five saw the Rose score on the first three questions and the PackHorse scored on the first two but missed out on Armani’s Emporio which couldn’t be picked up by the fashion conscious Rose team for a bonus with the Rose also dropping their last by missing Kaiser Bill’s reginal number by one, the PackHorse snatched the bonus and scored on the last for a round win of 6-7. Round six two part round first question saw the Rose play safe for two instead of running with the Moog synth on four points, the Pack picked up the predatory Pike for two also, the second question had the hosts Rose tied in knots and missing out although the answer North Dakota was mentioned in discussions, the bonus wasn’t picked up though and the PackHorse missed out totally on there second by gambling for four and the Rose could not recall Courtney Walsh’s name for any bonus points even though they could describe his career, batting position and county played for. Both teams played safe until the final question when the PackHorse picked up four with a good North Carolina and increase there overall lead to three points with a 34-37 scoreline. Round seven individuals saw both teams score four points by missing out on the Straits, and Craftsmen categories so going into the final round the PackHorse lead by three points and another upset for the league leaders was a serious prospect. The final round proved to be a stinker for the PackHorse as they blanked totally, whilst the round gave the host Rose team a full house and a bonus point on the last question for a turn around in the scoreline and a 47-41 point win for the hosts. The Beer leg saw the hosts clean up when they only missed the Crossword first Paper answer and Terry managed to stop breaking pens, guessed the distance and won the tie break cash for the hosts also. Thanks to Anne and Helen for the questions and scoring in a noisy venue on the night.
The match at Heap Bridge saw the Phoenix Knights take on the current champions and heavy scoring form team Radcliffe Cricket Club, the hosts Knights were also hindered with the Mexican Holiday jaunt of at least one team member (found out by the author whilst trying to trace the nights score, yes the phone line was clear, and no he hadn’t heard the score !). With this in mind the host’s couldn’t get going on the night and the visiting Cricketers scored heavily again picking up bonus points throughout and even having a poor last round for a score of 28-58, Phil Dodd to the rescue with the score.
Final match was by far the match of the week and it took place at St. Mary’s Radcliffe where the OscAr’s were the hosts and were searching for their third win in a row and the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook were the visitors, John Heenan reported that despite being Ten points adrift at the halfway mark the hosts staged a comeback and only lost in the final round, on the final question. Yosemite Sam reports for the visitors:-
Week fifeteen of the quiz season and the Hairy Hounds were off to a new venue for them of St Mary’s Catholic Club in Radcliffe. When Yosemite Sam informed the Birdman that St. Mary’s A had won there last two games, the Birdman said “they must have got in a couple of ringers”, to which Yosemite Sam quipped “they must be the bells of St.Mary’s” (oops).
First round, which the Hairy Hounds had elected to go first, saw St. Mary’s A take an early lead by 7-6. Second round saw the Hairy Hounds hit back when St. Mary’s had a disastrous time and courtesy of Russian Cuisine and Animated T.V. shows the score went 1-6 to the Hairy Hounds. Round three saw the Hairy Hounds increase that lead by two points when the round went with a score of 4-6. The stick round had the Hounds score four but the St. Mary’s A fell at the first hurdle giving a round score of 0-4 and half time totals of St. Mary’s A 12 Hare and Hounds 22.
Round five saw the Hairy Hounds increase their lead by one with a 6-7 score. Round six had a massive reversal in fortunes, with St. Mary’s A taking the round with an excellent total of 12-4 mainly due to the Hairy Hounds sitting in the wrong states. A high scoring second individual round seven saw both teams score three points each giving overall totals of 33-36. Round eight, a bonus less round, saw St. Mary’s answer there first two questions correctly whilst the Hounds miss both of theirs, so St. Mary’s A had taken a one point lead with two questions to go. Both teams then failed with the third and in a nail biting finish St. Mary’s failed on the last and it went to the final question, for which the Hairy Hounds managed to summon up Last of The Summer Wine to give a round score of 4-2 but a final score of St. Mary’s A 37 Hare and Hounds 38. The Hairy Hounds also managed to take the beer leg, phew on the night.
Quite a few Complaints from many different teams have been received again recently regarding the time taken to answer questions by quite a few of all the teams, no names no packdrill and due to this reason please can teams note that the question master can after sixty seconds maximum pass over the question, answer given or not and the passed over question can be disqualified after further fifeteen seconds if no answer is forthcoming. These rules are, as always are subject to the question masters discretion on the night taking into account background noise etc. Sorry for this announcement although the actual rules provide tighter timings, this is a reasonable time it is felt, to provide an answer and not spoil the night’s enjoyment. Please can home teams inform there question masters and announce the times at the start of the quiz night.
The teams that are yet to pay there subs for the year could they please provide payment to Margaret Chamberlain Rose Rammy at the earliest opportunity please.

Week 16 24-1-2011
Another action packed week in prospect and results are again hard to predict.
First match up is the Ramsbottom Derby at the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook where the visitors are the Rose and Crown, Taylor’s Tigers have took a pounding in the last two weeks and have dropped away from the Honours race slightly where as the Hairy Hounds are in the mix for top spot with two single point victories in hard fought matches, another is in prospect here and it could be that close again but the Hairy Hounds to win.
SunDial Walmersly Road host league leaders Rose and Crown Starling who have had a rough time since Christmas and the Harem will be tough to conquer also. A close match is in prospect for the Rose and an upset could be on the cards but an away win by a point.
St. Mary’s Radcliffe B’S host Ramsbottom Cricket Club and the hosts have scored heavily in the last two weeks comparatively, the Rammy Cricketers have played well but slipped up last week, this could be match of the week though and it will be very close and a draw is not far off but a home win by a point.
PackHorse Affetside have the Phoenix Knights tour bus from Heap Bridge Social Club climbing the hill, the hosts came very close to toppling the league leaders last week, whilst the visitors took a thrashing from the in form defending Champions. A close match is in prospect however especially if Barry is still in Mexico pounding the tequila. A home win could be on the cards but if the Pack slips up early on the Knights will run away with the match.
Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village host the St. Mary’s OscAr’s and another close match is in prospect here with both teams showing good form since the break, however the OscAr’s will have to be on top form to win this week and may just lose out by the odd point again.
Final match sees the on form Radcliffe Cricketers host the derby match against Stopes Tavern, the Tavern Elves have not had a good couple of weeks since the break, whilst the Cricketers have hit two teams for six, this looks an odds on home win on paper but the Elves could spring a surprise here and in anyway, run the Cricket club very close if they have the courage of there convictions.
