PHIL'S COMMENTS

The quiz league proper recommenced after the Christmas festivities with a full fixture list two matches took place last week to clear up some of the backlog.
Stopes Tavern hosted the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook and took the match 46-43 a report has been posted and will be added to the week seven comments.
The SunDial hosted the Rammy Cricketers who won a low scoring affair 33-39, from week 10.
First match to report in was the Radcliffe Derby match at Radcliffe Cricket Club, with the league leaders hosting the enigma that is St. Mary’s Social Club B’s the match was close throughout but the enigma played on top form and spoiled the New Year’s start for the hosts by taking the match in the final round by a score of 52-56 and grab the team of the week award. The league honours are in the melting pot again perhaps!
Second Match had the SunDial Walmersley Rd hosting the Stopes Tavern Elves with Helen cursing the luck of the 50/50 questions for the host Harem, Paul Gardner was praising his resurgent Elves at hitting traditional good form as they took the match with a score of 37-48.
Third match was at the home of Shoulder of Mutton in Holcombe Village, Heap Bridge Social Club were the visitors, the Shoulder of Mutton called it the basement Derby, as both teams are wandering around the bottom of the list this season, however a good match followed, un-surprisingly, in this real six pointer to quote football parlance.
In a game that was much closer than the score suggests as the Shoulder staged a comeback from behind after a disaster , the Knights had taken the first round but it only served to inflame the Shoulder Wolves, reports Steve Greenhalgh. As the wolves went on to take every subsequent round, if only by small margins. Crucial to the result was the host’s knowledge of American Super Heroes and Welsh Stations; this meant the Shoulder took the match with a final score of 57-48.
The Shoulder also took the beer leg, despite their inability to get the name of Supercars driver.
The fourth match this week saw the Ramsbottom Cricket Club host the visiting PackHorse Affetside an in a really good game according to reports the hosts just managed to succumb to the visitors in a close 38-42 result.
Final match was the war of the Roses part two, held at the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom with the Rose Starling electing to go first the match started very evenly and only the first Congresswomen from 1916 eluded both teams, and Starling took the early lead with an 6-8 advantage. The Taylor’s Tigers then slipped further behind in the first individual round when two of the categories of Farewells, Welsh Stations, Proverbs of John Ray and Fictional Pirates passed them by, however the visitors of Anne, Terry, Lee and Kieran grabbed a full house and a bonus Welsh Fire Station for a score of 4-9 in the round and overall a total of 10-17. Round three saw the host Tiger’s pounce back with their own full house and take the only bonus offered by the visitors, as Everton’s Youngest player Wayne Rooney was usurped and a correct Joe Royle was snapped up. Round score 9-6, for totals of 19-23. Round four stink or twist round on a theme of Foxes, both teams negotiated the first questions and the Starlings managed to flutter by the second but were stumped by the Author “Sassoon’s” Memoirs of a Foxhunting Man. However Taylor’s tigers had a memory slip when Fox- Talbot’s profession of Photography had them cunningly foxed on the second point stage, round score 1-2 for halfway totals of Rose and Crown Ramsbottom 20 Rose and Crown Starling 25. (And for Peter Taylor, it was even worse as it was one nil to City)
Round Five started badly for the Tigers as the London –Mexico World Cup Rally of 1970 slipped them by, however it also passed the Starling team by and this was the only dropped question of the round as Starling took a full house for a round score of 6-8 and totals of 26-33. Round six saw the two part questions and Taylor’s Tigers growled loud again to score heavily and come back to a point behind in the match, the Tigers team of Peter Taylor, Margaret Chamberlain, Sue Booth and George Hogg took a maximum four points on the first question and should have taken a further maximum in the round but went safe for two on their own further questions however the Starlings were kicking themselves when bonus points were lost when Kieran went green and got his Hornet and Lanterns mixed up and also missed Nancy Sinatra’s Bond theme. With round scores going 12-6 it gave totals of 38-39, and squeaky bum time had arrived for the visitors. Round Seven second individual round had categories of Flint Films, Australian Birds, Doctor Who and Little people. Both teams were successful with the first three categories but then both dropped a Leprechaun and a Goblin for no score and a drawn round at Six points with both teams now wriggling uncomfortably in the chairs the overall scores remained a point apart. The final round therefore was a very nervous affair with both teams dropping the first questions, however the Starlings took a bonus with Irradiation and the Tigers missed the Koh-i-nor diamond both teams then answered the second questions, with nerves jangling the Tigers missed their crucial third question and luckily the bonus went begging but the visitors then increased the lead to four points overall and seal the match when they grabbed their own third question, both teams then missed there own final questions as the Hope diamond was lost for the Tigers but then they did close the gap to three points at the final whistle by grabbing a final Kosher bonus. Round score 3-5 for final totals of Rose and Crown Ramsbottom 47 Rose and Crown Starling 50.
The beer leg was won by a single point by the Tigers and this was the match of the week winner… just.
The Hare and Hounds had a spare week and are planning the beer festivals for the coming year.

Week 16 23-1-12
Week Sixteen is another fully competitive week in prospect, with the league top teams now all looking at scores and prospects.
Match one is a Radcliffe Derby with the enigma St. Mary’s B hosting form team Stopes Tavern, Paul Gardner’s Elves are in full seasonal form and will be difficult to overcome if this holds, however the Enigma are back in the race at the top of the table and will want to consolidate that position. Close game and a draw may be in prospect but a home win ……perhaps by a point.
Second match has the Hare and Hounds hosting the visit of the PackHorse and with both teams knowing each other so well this one will be hard to predict but the Hairy Hounds want to keep pressure on the leaders, close but the Hounds perhaps by just a point.
Third match has the Ramsbottom Cricket Club hosting visiting the SunDial, with Helens Harem hoping the 50/50 questions go there way this week this may be close but the Rammy Cricketers are quietly making progress up the league and a home win but it won't be easy, again is the prediction.
Fourth match has the Radcliffe Cricket Club hosting the Shoulder of Mutton, the Shoulder are a team that will exploit any chinks in the leaders armour and can really blow the league wide open if they win which is not beyond them by any stretch of the imagination, it will be a close contest but the Cricket Club may just have enough steam to win but not by many and a draw may be not far off also.
Final match has the Heap Bridge Social Club hosting the Rose and Crown Rammy with all matches this week looking close this is no exception and the hosts are a team that the form book has been very Cruel to this season a home win is not far off but this one I suspect may be a draw.
The Rose Starling are having a week off and hoping results go their way...
