PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week 16 Feb 25th With the dark days of February coming to a close with a final lashing of high winds and heavy rain the Quiz league warmed every teams brains by serving up some peppery fayre this week. Match of the week and team of the week this week has been an easy choice, with the sky turning blue/pink with a funny shaped border, things have gone right for once at Swan and Railway Radcliffe where the table propping John Harris’s A’s had the formidable opposition of a full strength third place chasing Rose and Crown Bury visiting. Rose captain Ian Openshaw said even with Andy Ainsworth back they caught the Swan’s A’s normal problem of talking themselves out of the right answer, and wrong choices said it took nothing away from the A’s who were excellent. The Rose Bury being in front at half time by 9 points only for the Swan to claw back & to be ahead by 7 points going into the last round thanks to The Swan’s culinary expert Julie Keenan who was spot on with her French vegetables also thanks to Allan Smith who stood in for Louise Hardman who was away Allan is the Steward at St Mary's Catholic Club next door to the Swan. However with the Rose pressing, Swan A’S held on to record their first win of the season 46 - 44 points! ps anorak of the week John Heenan who not only knew that Evening Star was the last steam train built for British Rail but also got the Dr Who question right for a bonus point! Well deserved Team of the week Swan and Railway A’s. The Rose Bury are off for a spot of r&r in China to get ready for next week. The visit of Rose and Crown Starling to the heights of the PackHorse Affetside was predicted to be a close affair but on the night the Pack Horse team of Simon Waddington, Sue Pinder, Joe Walk and Adrian Finbow were off colour and struggled to score in the first half. The Rose Starling took a two point lead in the first round then extended it to eight points in the second although Glastonbury didn’t sing for the secretary. Further gains in round three and a point in round four saw the visitors have a half time lead of 9-22. The second half started much better for the home side and they pulled back three points in round five although our north east native Kieran disputes what a “Singing Hinny” is. Is it a type of pancake with fruit or a fruit cake answers on a postcard please. The secretary was also talked out of the Crab Nebula by the legend Wally Warrington who was around when it formed! The visitors took the safe options in the four or two point round but still increased the lead as the home side took risks to try and close the gap. Rounds seven and eight had the Rose take full houses and the odd bonus point with Bob Selby playing well, to see a final score of 32-52. Excellent doorstop butties were served after the match also. The visit of Rose and Crown Ramsbottom to the Radcliffe Cricket club saw a much closer score, with Rose Rammy capable of beating all teams on their day but having a mixed season this year, the league leading Cricketers must have had a few scares on the night as Peter Taylor’s team picked up the form book again to post a good score but still succumb with a 56-46 result to Phil Dodd’s men. Final Match was at the SunDial Walmersley road where Stopes Taverner’s were on tour, with points hard to come by in the first half on the night for the both teams, the home team led 15-12 at the half but they were second best after the half way point.Paul Gardener’s Taverners like to make a late season surge and continue to do so as they came away with the points. Final Score 32-48 Week 17 Monday March 3rd Match of the week for this week, is the clash at Rose and Crown Bury where the leaders Radcliffe Cricket club are batting, if the Rose Bury recover form after last week they will run the leaders very close and the Cricketers will have to tread carefully to come away with points. A very narrow away win but won’t be surprised if the result is opposite. Swan and Railway B’s host the PackHorse Affetside with both of these sides challenging for third spot also this game has an extra bite to it as the losers are likely to finish the season fifth or sixth if both teams play on top form it is likely to be very close but the Swan’s are going to be fresh from a weeks rest and they may just have the edge after the PackHorse slipped badly last week. Heap Bridge Social Club are also a challenger for the third spot and have the Swan and Railway A’s visiting. If the Phoenix lads play to form they will be hard to beat but with the Swan A’s flying high could they upset the applecart again, won’t be surprised! Final game this week is the Rose and Crown Starling hosting the SunDial, if the visitors are back on form this will be close but with the home side just hanging on to the league leaders coat tails they cannot afford to drop points. A home win predicted but it could be close. Peter Taylors Rose Rammy side and Paul Gardeners Taverner’s have a free week to regroup. The end of season handicap cup draw will be made shortly, prize suggestions for the raffle on finals night are welcome also.
