PHIL'S COMMENTS
The matches this week were affected by altitude snowness when Rose and Crown Rammy couldn’t travel off the hill to Radcliffe Cricket Club. Rose and Crown Starling and the home Packhorse Affetside team thought that the snow would continue longer and postponed for safety reasons.
The matches that did take place the Swan and Railway A’s played Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook with both sides fielding full strength sides, despite the weather and the transfer window passing both teams bye with no movement. The Swan’s hoped to be fortified by Mavis’s winter brew but lost the first round and were struggling throughout the match. The Hairy Hounds played well throughout and ended up winning 28-46. The home side has requested an extension to the transfer window.
The second match was the encounter at the SunDial where in-form Stopes Tavern were the visitors. With the temperature plummeting outside & the distinct possibility of an all night Snow bound lock-in, a warm welcome was awaiting for the visit of the Stopes Tavern to the Sun Dial.
Stopes elected to go second against Barney & the 3 pronged female attack he had assembled for tonight’s game. The early scoring favoured the visitors & after 3 rounds we led 21-9. The lack of knowledge on both sides of celebrity bodies, led to low scoring in the stick or twist round & added only a further 2 points to Stopes tally & non to the Diallers. At the half way stage Stopes had a healthy lead of 23-9.
The scoring swung back in the favour of the home side in Rd 5 as they reduced the deficit to 10 points. Barney & the Girls could sense a famous come-back & threw caution to the wind in the stick or twist Rd. Sadly their brave tactics back-fired on them & they fell further behind losing the Rd 11-2.
With any chance of a victory now behind them, the Diallers rallied & out-scored Stopes in the final 2 rounds for a final score of Stopes 46 – 30 Sun Dial. With the Stopes on a seemingly un-stoppable run of form, next weeks rest may prove to be an un-timely distraction!!!???
The Phoenix nights of Heap Bridge Social Club and Swan B had a free week.
Feb10th The re-arranged match of Packhorse against leaders Rose and Crown Starling took place.
With the weather forecast fair, it was a nervous Rose team that attended and after the first round with both teams level it seemed they had reason to be so. The second individual round saw both teams struggling for points and only the visitors knowledge of cars boosted them to a 4-0 round win. Sue Pinder and her team of Simon Waddington, Adrian Finbow and James Perkin continued to struggle throughout the first half and the visitors increased there lead to 9 points at the half even though both teams blanked the stick or twist round. Round 5 saw the Rose wake up and take hold of the match completely, much to Sue’s annoyance and fear of retribution from husband Mike, even Legend Wally had finally got his ears tuned and had contributed. (Note: will all teams who host the Rose have an emergency ear trumpet for Wally to hire please as he keeps forgetting to wear his electric ears) Rounds six and seven finally saw some points scoring from the home side but the Rose still increased the lead with Bob Selby and Siberia bound Kieran scoring well. With a final flourish from the visitors, the match ended, final score 21-52.
25 feb 2009
the snow delayed match took place at the Radcliffe Cricket club as the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom could toboggan of the hill and a close affair it was too. The Cricketers eventually overcome the visitors but not by many as the final score was 42-38.
Feb 9th week 16
The matches this week will look as tough as a couple of weeks ago.
Hairy hounds have the Radcliffe Cricketers visiting and with a decent win this week and the Cricketers needing to win to keep the title pressure on, it could be the ideal time for the hounds to take their scalp, it is a certain match of the week candidate and a very close game is on the cards, a narrow win for the visitors is in the tea leaves but a draw is also a possibility.
Heap Bridge come of the free week and host Swan A’s. The Swans had there wings clipped again last week after a run of form and I can’t see the phoenix night giving them nothing more than a few niblets of corn for energy. Home win though competitive.
Swan b’s host the Packhorse and with the home side in a run of form, the PackHorse may find bonus’s difficult, a closer game than expected but the home side may be a point or two ahead at the close.
Rose Starling have the Sundial and barney’s harem visiting the game could be close but the home side has to keep winning for the title so no quarter given. A home win by a few only!!
The Stopes take a rest this week but will be practising to keep there form and the Rose rammy also have a free to shift the snow probably.
