PHIL'S COMMENTS

Back to sunshine, warmth and long lazy days...., right, now I have woken up, time for the results and reports. With two games being played on the Tuesday night due to the football, this is the reason the report/ results have been posted late. The three matches that were held on Monday provided excitement and two close contests, with this half of the article written Tuesday pm.
Match of the week is already decided unless the two outstanding tuesday matches both draw with a high score, and the match is the Swan and Railway B Radcliffe who had the Packhorse Affetside visiting the Swanery, all night it was a close game, and the Swan B just managed to pip the form improving PackHorse side, by just two points and a high overall score by both teams. Ah yes the scoreline was 52-50. And a text that reported Swan A had won confused the writer for an hour or so, as I knew Swan A were being taught how football is played via the Sky live game.
Heap Bridge Social club hosted SunDial Affetside (barney and the harem visit the Phoenix Nights sounds like a good name for a film of some sort) and in another close contest throughout the visitors were just overcome by the Phoenix Knights (must have been neville back to form)when they posted a score of 42-37.
The other game to go ahead was the war of the Roses return, as Rose and Crown Starling had the Rose and Crown Rammy and Taylor’s tiger’s visiting. With form and the title slipping away for the Rose Starling this was tipped to be another loss but the home side proved someone else wrong.
Round One saw tradition being followed and Rose Rammy going first, first question scored for both teams but the second one had the tigers assasinate the answer with the Rose Starling picking up the bonus with arabic, the rest of the round was shared for a score of 9-6 . Round two individuals saw a disaster for the visitors when only the last question scored for Rammy and Starling picked up all other points for a score of 20-8. Round three saw the visitors drop just the second question on “rites of passage”author and Rose Starling score the bonus and a full house again for a score of nine six in the round and overall 29-14.Round four stick or twist had both teams play safe at the two point level for a half time score of 31-16, the Rose Starling not dropping a question or point until the stick or twist round.
Round Five saw Rammy drop the rugby union bloodgate question but pick up a bonus when the hosts dropped there first question, on the original name of the V&A museum in london. Taylor’s tigers, who on the night were Margaret Chamberlain, Martin Baggoley, Ian and Peter Taylor, taking the round win , 7-6 to give an overall score of 37-23. Round six is the four or two round and the hosts played safe for a row of two’s and picking up a bonus with Vicente Fox’s country but missed out on the terrible folk question on leadbelly who is a blues singer!!! Bonus, 9-4 the round. 46-27 the score. Round seven back to individuals the Rose Starling team of Kieran, Lee, Terry and someone else, got two and dropped two in that order, but picked up a bonus with the last and the Rose Rammy got one, dropped three in that order, but picked up a bonus with Paul Potts, so five to three the round. 51-30 the score. Final round saw the Rose Starling drop the first and last but picked a bonus on one and the Rose Rammy dropped one ond two but picked up bonuses on one and four to take the last round six points to four but lose to the hosts 56-36 who may yet take the team of the week award!!!
Well day two of this weeks quiz and the Rose Starling has been upended in there quest for team of the week, with a report from the Hairy Hounds by Yosemite Sam below.
On a night when both teams were still celebrating Bury's win over Rochdale, and hence the day's delay in the quiz fixture, Radcliffe Cricket Club were guests of the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook. It was rumoured that there could be an ill wind in view of the Cricket Club’s current total point score of 666, but undaunted they opted to go first. In the opening round both teams failed on a question, with the opposition picking up the bonus, resulting in a 7 all draw. In the first individual round the Cricketer’s were sick not knowing which medicine would make them throw up, which was picked up by Andy Ainsworth, whose own question was a piece of p**s. Woburn Abbey was another Safari bonus, so the Hairy Hounds had a 4 point lead at the end of Round Two. Round 3 went 7-6 to the Cricketer’s. Stick or Twist finished a safe 2 points all, giving Hairy Hounds a half-time lead of 23-20. Sixth round was 7-6 to Radcliffe. In two parters everyone played safe going for second part, except for the Cricketer’s who went for all four points on their final question with Woody Guthrie (also Hounds first answer on paper and probably everyone else’s also!) on the Leadbelly questions, which both teams blanked. giving the Hairy Hounds a further 2 point lead 37-33. Second individual round saw Famous British Generals correctly answered. Hairy Hounds took all points on licensing bodies, Cricketer’s snapped up the Britain's Got Talent points, with the Hounds again cleaning up on Drinks flavouring (another of their specialist subjects), giving the Hairy Hounds a 7 point lead going into the last round.Hairy Hounds full housed and Radciffe Cricketer’s dropped one, giving a final score of Hare + Hounds 53 Radcliffe Cricket Club 44. Hairy Hounds took the beer leg 22-21. Both teams enjoyed a sausage casserole with chips and shepherds pie chaser, not to mention some gorgeous beers, and a warm smokey fire, by which both teams basked while remembering Monday night's victory. The Hairy Hounds celebrated inflicting this year’s league leader’s first defeat of the season well into the night, or at least to 10:30pm, seeing as the original quiz was all done and dusted by 9:30pm.
And for this win the Hairy Hounds are this week’s team of the week.
Final game this week is the visit of the Stopes Tavern Elves to Ramsbottom Cricket club where the game swung on the first round scoring, as it turned out. Six of the Eight rounds were drawn and Stopes Tavern won the first round by 5 points with the Elves by-passing tradition and opting to go second. Very close to being match of the week with a final Score of 40-46.
footnote from quiz headquarters-
From the first line of the Wikipedia entry on Leadbelly:
Huddie William Ledbetter (January 1888 – December 6, 1949) was an iconic American folk and blues musician, notable for his strong vocals, his virtuosity on the 12-string guitar, and the songbook of folk standards he introduced ..... p.s. bulls**t
Week 17 Monday 8th Feb 2010
Matches this week could by the looks of it, throw up another set surprising results it appears, so some teams may be in for a shock.
The Swan and Railway A have Rose Ramsbottom and Taylors Tigers visiting, with last weeks heavy defeat still smarting, Peter and the tiger cubs would want to bounce straight back but the Swans may just win this by a point or two in what could be match of the week.
SunDial slipped up last week away to the knights but at home there form seems to pick up. The visiting Swan and Railway b may be in for a good fight again after there narrow win last week,...... away win but very close could be the result.
PackHorse have the Hairy Hounds visiting the wild and windy moorland location, in a traditional close derby match usually, I expect no difference this week. The hounds are chasing runners up spot though and on a high after last weeks win, so the motivation may just be there to close out a result but Sue and the Pack lads have shown good scoring with mixed results recently .....final score ...................mmmmmm..................home win by a point.!!
Rose Starling are visiting the elves at Stopes Tavern this week and with a good win posted against the Rose Rammy they may just have the edge on paper but the elves are another team fighting for the runner’s up shield and may just have the edge by a point.
Finally this years champions elect Radcliffe Cricketers host the Phoenix knight’s tour bus and may be in for a surprise, you can never know with the knights, after last weeks first defeat of the season Phil Dodd would have had them in training this week so a home win is predicted but...............
Ramsbottom Cricketers are bailing out this week with all the rain we have been having.

A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side. Contact details along with the league tables are on this website.
