PHIL'S COMMENTS
The quiz league post Christmas is in full swing even if Sub Aqua gear is required to reach venues with the continuous wet weather around.
Matches reported in very quick time this week and few comments were made on the questions this week as round four had a printing error, missing the entire first question in part 4b and rearranging the following parts to not correspond with the answers and a hotly disputed O.S. sign in the second individual questions for the capital P part which could have been a number of answer meanings according to the O.S. web site.
First match to report in was the Radcliffe Derby match at St. Mary’s Catholic Club where the B’s were hosting the Stopes Tavern Elves and the seasonal form seems to have deserted the Elves this week as the B’s took charge of the match to keep up the pressure in the chase for league honours 48-40 final score.
Second match was at the home of the league leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club, where the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village were this weeks supposed lambs to the slaughter, as the leaders bounced back from last weeks defeat. But it turned out that the Cricketers had a huge battle on their hands and just managed to keep the Shoulder at bey in the final round. Match of the week with a final score of 52-49 and team of the week Shoulder of Mutton.
Heap Bridge Social Club were the hosts when Rose and Crown Ramsbottom came calling. Taylors Tigers had a battle on their hands, as this seasons luckless side the Phoenix Knights had a sniff of a win and only succumbed finally in the last round to a 39-42 score.
The fourth match this week saw the Ramsbottom Cricket Club host the visiting SunDial Walmersley Rd with the report saying that the SunDial were up against the odds when they chose to the wrong set of questions by going second, the hosts ran away with the match to continue there quiet rise up the table and challenge for honours this season with a 52-36 win.
Final competitive match this week took place at the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook who hosted well known rivals PackHorse Affetside, Yosemite Sam reports on the match:-
Monday night saw a slightly ring rusty Hare and Hounds playing there first correctly fixtured game since the Twelfth of December(seemed like never), against the visitors the PackHorse.
The Horse decided to go first and galloped into a 4-9 lead , (nobody had phoned Russia). The Hairy Hounds bounced back in the first Individual round two scoring 4-8, with only bishop bashing curt mantle going unanswered, so the PackHorse’s rein was shortened to one point. Round three saw a tied round at five apiece.
Round four stink round saw the Pack crew stick on two, the Hounds Inquisitor, Jill, realised that something was amiss when other half Andy gave Cary Grant as the answer while trying to catch of thief (who it appears had stolen the first question!). So spotting that Cary Grant wasn’t a well known Shakespearian play, Jill paused the game and it was eventually decided between the teams that a spare should be read for the Hairy Hounds second question. The Hounds cycled their way through it, but got the tails caught in a “Mousetrap”, so also stuck on two. Halftime score Hare and Hounds 19 PackHorse 20.
Round five saw both team score a four all draw. Round six, two part questions, saw the PackHorse score a full house with one max and a single point bonus from the Hairy Hounds only dropped question and so increased their lead and took the round with a 6-11 score for totals of 29-35.
Round seven second individuals saw the PackHorse gain on Children’s Authors but then allow the Hairy Hounds to gain on Artist’s for another level round at five apiece. Round eight saw the Hairy Hounds served with the only unanswered question of the round, for a final round score of 6-8 and a final score of Hare and Hounds 42 PackHorse 50.
So a Pinderless Pack Pinched the Points to Promote a Positional change in the league table. Beer leg minus a spare, finished all square and the Hounds nicked it by the nearest of New Mexicos!
NB.-- Since the above match has been played there have been some sudden shock developments, and the PackHorse side have been forced, due to the closure of the venue, to relocate and will now play there home fixtures from The Royal Hotel, Bury Rd, Tottington.

We the league have also been contacted by Sue Craft representing The Samaritans they are holding a much needed fund raising Supper and Quiz at Bury F.C. Social Club on Saturday 25th February , tickets are £8.00 per person and are available from Sue on 0161 7960235 after 6pm. The Bury Samaritans are mainly self funded and this annual function has helped them continue to operate this worthy charity.

The Rose and Crown Starling had a spare week and were hoping results went in there favour. They did hold a friendly squad match with three a side featuring the legend Wally Warrington and the Italian Captains beat Wally’s survivors by a score of 45-39, the Captains also abandoned ship with the beer leg. Helen Goldsbrough was question master.

Week 17 30-1-12
Week Seventeen is another fully competitive week in prospect, if the weather is more favourable than looking at the forecasts.
Match one is an dead cert to fall if the weather turns rough, where the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom are scheduled to host the league leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club seem to be going through a tough patch of late. If Taylors Tigers hold form they may hold the Cricketers in check for many rounds but Phil Dodds men cannot afford to slip up again and will want to take this match easier than last week a draw is not good for the leaders either and this may be the result as the match could be that close.
Second match has the Shoulder of Mutton hosting St. Mary’s B’s and after last weeks posted results the enigmatic B’s had better beware, as the Shoulder wolves will be flying high and it will not be an easy tie. The prediction is for a very close game and the hosts may just scrape it controversially but a draw is also a result not too far away.
Third match has the Stopes Tavern hosting the Ramsbottom Cricket Club and the Cricket Club have been quietly progressing this season under the disguise of having matches in hand they have rarely appeared at the very top of the table, however if they win there re-arranged matches they will be almost within striking distance of the top. So the Elves will have to be on top form again after last weeks hiccup in traditional form to get anything out of this fixture and I predict a close contest again but the visitors may just have an answer to spare at the end.
Fourth match has the SunDial hosting Hare and Hounds. Helen’s Harem picked the wrong set of Questions last week and took a heavy loss, this week the Hairy Hounds will hope to bounce back into form to have any chance of a high table finish. Close match but an away win.
The Rose Starling are visiting the PackHorse in the final match and normally if the weather was bad, this would be an at risk fixture, however with the emergency relocation to the Royal due to circumstances beyond their control, Mike and Sue Pinder have quickly bypassed the problem and they are not even available to play this week. This will be another close match but the PackHorse / Royal hit form last week, will they crown there new home debut with a win? …. Perhaps but the visitors have rested well and may just sneak it over the Royal Horsemen.
Heap Bridge Social Club are having a rest this week and the knights will get well oiled ready for an assault on the remainder of the league fixtures.
New Players are wanted to strengthen team squads, contact the league secretary.
