PHIL'S COMMENTS

Week17
Match of the week was, as predicted, the top of the table clash between Rose and Crown Bury who are chasing the runners-up spot and Radcliffe Cricket Club, challengers for the league title. The game on the night did not disappoint by all reports. The Cricketers opened up a three point gap at the halfway point but the Rose battled back and turned the score around for a four point lead by the end of round 6. Phil Dodd's Cricketers, who are always there or thereabouts at the top every season, dragged the game back again to lead by one point at the end of round seven. In an exciting and tense final round, Ian Openshaw's on-form Rose side turned it around again to score a knockdown win in a excellent match - 41-39. Apparently the Cricketers are rueing the Sacred Cow question which did not ring any bells, but instead gave them a pat on the head. Still all to fight for, for both teams this season. Watch this space! The Swan and Railway B, back from the free week, had the Pack Horse Affetside visiting and were top points scorers on the night. Enid's Swans paddling away for a 47-25 win. Heap Bridge Social Club had Swan and Railway A visiting and even Mavis's tonic could not upset Neville's water rats, who are a top of the table side at home. The Phoenix Nights lads winning 41-28. Final game of the week saw leaders Rose and Crown Starling hosting the Sun Dial, who had Roger Hamer, to quote "back from the dead" and his recent illness, making a welcome return alongside Dave O'Brien, Eunice Pooler and Helen Lee. The very good Sun Dial team have not had the rub of the green this season going down only narrowly in more than a few matches which belies their league position. But they could not peg back the league leaders on the night, who ran away with the match after Roger looked a proper Charlie on round four. Kieran Goldsbrough dug himself out of the "mushy dung" to lead the side, with Jayne Woodward playing well except for her "china girl" crisis. The score 41-24. Week 18 Game of the week this week, is the Sun Dial hosting Swan B. Can Barney's Dial side win a narrow one or will Alec's Swan Bs win it by a neck? It will be that close again, if the girls are on form for the home side. Close challengers for match of the week is the visit of the Heap Bridge Phoenix Nights lads to Peter Taylor's Rose Rammy. This one could be very close also - the Rose might, and it is just might, squeak a win. Leaders Rose Starling require just one point from their remaining two games to retain the title and do not relish a trip to a revitalised Stopes Tavern. However, if the legendary Wally is on top form after a week's rest and an appearance from the correspondent perhaps, the Rose may have a nervy win over Paul's Taverners. Final game this week see Swan A greet the visiting Cricketers. With Phil Dodd's team licking their wounds from last week's battle and requiring a good win, the Swan A will need a tanker full of Mavis's tonic to win. But you never know, the Loch Ness monster could appear in the Bury/Bolton canal!!! Pack Horse and Rose Bury are on a free week and have scheduled a friendly match. The draw will be made shortly for the cup games and the handicaps will be announced. |
