PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week 17 Mar 3rd March is upon us, and winter has bitten back with short snow showers and a deep freeze and the scores this week seem to have suffered in sympathy with a brain teasing week for most teams. The Rose and Crown Bury hosted leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club and the hosts have slipped up in the last couple of weeks, this week was no exception as they couldn’t haul back the league leaders once they got there nose in front. With just two more games remaining for the Cricketers they cannot afford any slip-ups and don’t look like doing so final score 34-44. Contender for match of the week was the clash at Heap Bridge Social club where they had the Swan and Railway Radcliffe A’s visiting, fresh from there first victory of the season the visitors played excellently again and almost notched another win when they ran the excellent Phoenix Nights Lads very close, to lose the11 match 39-34. The second placed Rose and Crown Starling hosted the SunDial Walmersley Rd, in a first half which started off very well with both teams drawing the first two rounds, with the visiting team of Helen Lee, Dave O’Brien, Eunice Pooler and Roger Amer taking the lead in the third by two points the home team looked a little nervous. A bad mistake in the stick or twist round saw the SunDial score no points straight away and the Rose managed to level at 16-16 in a low scoring half. Round five saw the home side and thanks to Jayne Woodward who played excellent on the night, take a four point lead. Jayne who can only play the home games due to family sporting commitments this season, has been missed but made up for it in this match by scoring all eight points in round 5 for the home side and notching up points heavily all match. The home team consolidated there lead by a further six points in the stick or twist round, no thanks to the “Humber” question. The visitors then collapsed in the final two rounds when they scored no points and the home team who had Lee Sawbridge, Terry Brierley, and Kieran Goldsbrough supporting Jayne, ran away with the match 49-24. Final game and match of the week was the Swan and Railway B’s at home to the Packhorse Affetside in a match that the visitors were leading for most of the match by five points the Swan’s managed to haul back the deficit and draw the match with a score of 35-35. Both teams are still in the hunt for third spot. 18 Monday March 10th Match of the week for this week, is the clash at Rose and Crown Ramsbottom where they host the Phoenix Nights lads, if Peter Taylor’s home side has regrouped after there weeks rest this will go close but the visitors have third place in their sights and may prove very tough to overcome on the night. An away win but only just maybe. The SunDial host Swan and Railway B’s, if the hosts can gather themselves together after last weeks mauling they can run the Swan’s close but with the Swans fighting for third place this could be a win for the visitors, it is going to be very close though. Stopes Tavern have the second place Rose Starling visiting, in a match that will also be very tough as the hosts have started there annual late season surge. The visitors will have to be at their best to come away with the points and a slip up will hand over the title however an away win is predicted but the Taverners will be hot on there tails. Final match this week is the Radcliffe Derby between Swan A’s and the leaders the Cricketers, normally it would be the visiting Cricketers to run away with the match, but the home side are at last having the rub of the green, so the leaders will have to be very wary, a not impossible slip at this stage may cost them dearly in the title chase. The Rose Bury and the Packhorse are on free weeks and keep up the rivalry with a friendly match and a 1rst Round cup rehearsal. Handicap Cup Draw. Preliminary round. April 7 th A.
