PHIL'S COMMENTS
The matches this week proved to be very close across the board.
Top match, but only just, was the visit to Heap Bridge Social club by the Swan and Railway A’s. The Swan’s must have been fortified by Mavis’s tonic before arriving as they took an early lead and romped ahead in the first half but the phoenix lads rose and fought back in the second half to force a tie at 42-42. Both managers were “relieved of duty” after the match it was reported.
Close call for match of the week was the visit of Radcliffe Cricketers to Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook. With an enforced week off due to the weather, the Cricketers were itching to get back in action but they met a home side on top form as scoring was high on the night, the Hare and hounds had the better of a strongly contested first half and was leading at the half way mark by 5 points. The home side stretched the lead in round five to 7 points but lost the four or two round by seven, so the Cricketers had levelled the score. In round seven the home side had a disastrous individual round, to allow the mighty Cricketers a five point lead, again the home side fought back to win the last round but sadly for them they could only claw back a point of the lead and the visiting Cricketers had closed the match out by four, with a score of 52-56, and Phil Dodd’s title chasers had to breathe a sigh of relief on a very close call after winning just two rounds on the night. Team of the week the Hairy Hounds who had to take consolation in the post match steak pie.
Swan B’s hosted the Packhorse and in another tense and hard fought match the visitors had to succumb to the home side but only just by a score of 39-34, the Swan B’s seem to be off colour after there rest week.
Final match this week was the visit of the SunDial Walmersly Rd to Rose and Crown Starling with Barney O’Brien and his harem of Eunice Pooler, Ann Wylie, Anne Lee-Nicolson having a nightmare in the first half, talking themselves out of the correct answer a number of times, the home side had taken a firm grip of the match it seemed. However Barney and the Girls came storming back in the second half outscoring the league leaders and making it a tale of “if only”. And the quizmaster also played a blinder. Final score 48-30.
The Rose and Crown Ramsbottom and the Stopes Tavern had a free week.
Feb 16th week 17
The matches this week have a very competitive edge to them as league places are up for grabs.
Two matches of the week matches potentially on paper, firstly Rose Rammy hosting Heap Bridge Phoenix Lads who have a climb to overcome twice, the route to the rose and trying to overcome Peter’s team who are determined to finish third this year. If both teams are on form a very close affair with Rammy having a long rest recently this may prove their downfall but still Taylor’s tigers may have it by a point.
Second contender is Stopes Tavern who have league leaders Rose Starling visiting. The Rose has to win to keep at the top and Stopes prior to there free week are the form side of the league this year. A tough one to call as Starling will be nervous on the night but controversially it could be the visitors by a point again....maybe......just.
The Sun Dial has another side in form visiting them, in the shape of Swan B’s. This will be more competitive than the Swan’s expect but if the form holds they will prevail.
The Swan A’s host the Radcliffe Derby with the Cricketers, and the Cricketers will be gunning for a win to keep the pressure on the leaders. So the A’s will have to absorb a magic dose of Mavis’s tonic to have a chance at this point of the season.
The Hairy Hounds and Packhorse are on a free and probably, are playing each other as usual in a friendly.
