PHIL'S COMMENTS

Just a week or so before everywhere is snow bound again, if rumours are true then all venues’ provided warm and competative matches, with probably the most agonising set of questions of the season.
First match report up is by our “rover” reporter from the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook, Yosemite Sam.
The Hare and Hounds took the scenic route to the Pack Horse Affetside. The Hairy Hounds elected to go first, but the gamble faltered and they failed to amble their way through the first round, which The Pack Horse typically won at a canter 7 - 3. Hairy Hounds pulled one point back in first individual round, courtesy of Andy Ainsworth's knowledge of Spanish Cities. The Hounds then pulled back another 3 points in round 3, resulting in the score of 14 points apiece. Round four remained draughty at 4 points all. The next 2 rounds the Packhorse galloped away and the rounds went 8-4 and 8-5 to the home team and the 7th round individuals, were also drawn 4 apiece. This left Dave Wright and the rest of The Hairy Hounds none too chuffed, with an ardent uphill struggle (much like the journey to Affetside) of needing to claw back 7 points. Alas the baying Hairy Hounds only managed to take the round with a 9-6 win in the final round resulting in victory for The Pack Horse 44 - 40, which was the birthday present Sue had requested at the beginning of the evening. Hairy Hounds managed to take the beer leg, while some team members vultured into the doorstop butties.
The second match, is this week’s match of the week, which went all the way to the wire. The Rose and Crown Rammy were the visitors to the Swan and Railway Radcliffe this week to play the much improved A’s, and in a tense match, which the home team had the added boost of mavis’s tonic, the A’s managed to overcome Taylor’s tigers by a single point 42-41, the home team then had to lie down in a darkened room to recover, namely the beer cellar.
The Sundial Walmersly rd had the Swan and Railway B visiting, Barney and the harem played well but the on form Swans took a hold of the match and could not be caught, and took the match with a score of 38-49.
In a fixture that is down in the list as being at the Cricket Club Radcliffe, however the fixture had been switched via a prior arrangement and forgotten by the secretary until the result came in, but that is all water under the Heap bridge as the Phoenix knights, with Neville on form apparently, played excellently on the night at home, to inflict only the second defeat of the season and second in a row on the champions elect Cricket Club of Radcliffe, where has the form gone! why has Phil Dodds men started batting on a sticky wicket! is this weather bowling them some googlies! all will be revealed in this weeks Sunday Papers we hope as they have a free week next week to recover composure, anyway the score Phoenix Knights 52- Radcliffe Cricket Club 50, and it goes without saying who the team of the week are this week, ...er....r ..o......s......Heap Bridge Social club and the game almost took match of the week also.
Final game was the visit of the Rose Starling to the home of the elves at Stopes Tavern always a tough match but this one was tougher than normal. The Rose Starling chose to go first and had a quick fling at the first question with Highland games for two points, and then that was it for the round, they were then cruelly put off by questionmaster TIM GREEN Stating the answer for the elves first go. A mortal blow had been struck, everything was pollacked up and Doris Day was a simple replacement, however with the Rose's concentration deliberately broken, this helped the home Elves side to score a full house and two bonus’s when the visitors couldn’t amble and made a right load of cobbler’s about there fishy fayre. St Paul’s was acting as a church too far for both sides.Round Two individual’s had the visitors Bob Selby failing on Stalin and Lee Sawbridge not knowing any litte whorehouse in texas let alone the best one, the visitors went down again 6-4 in the round with only Haig failing for the home elves side of Paul Gardner, Bert Bullough, Roger Bolt, Ian Brealy and of course TIM GREEN question master. Round three saw both sides falter a little with pronouciation being the problem when the visitors had problems with Swedish female golfers and cox initially but scoring the final two answers and the home side capturing the lizard and picking the bonus apples and shapely golfer but failing with the female jockey Greaves and compost corner on the last question,to give a round score 4 a piece. Both teams scored four only when they ran out of wind in the stick or twist round, to give a half time score of 24 -14. Round five after the visitors had calmed down with a stick of freshair saw the home side going first and missing only Falstaff to score six whilst the visitors missed dear Raiph V.W. and Metropolis by miles but luckily these weren’t picked up for a round score of 6-5. The Four or two pointers had the visitors having to take risks and the home side just taking things smoothly, the visitors missed the first two questions and the last to score a grand total of two on there own questions but did gain two bonus points, where the elves had raced ahead after the first two question to score ten points with a straight of 2, 1, 4 and 3 points but gave away bonus’s on the final two questions with kidney picked up by Dr Kieran and charles 1 for a round score of 10-4. Round seven saw the visitors finally win a round when they scored a full house and bonus on indiviuals, thanks go to Mr Paul Gardners generosity with nerves when Mr TIM GREEN wasn’t going to allow it,(” pollacks my arse”). Round score 9-6 to have an acculumative total of 32-46 it was at this point that the visitors saw the writing on the wall, and also thought the home team was going to win. With the home side picking up a bonus on pixar in the final round and dropping only obscure welsh folk tales (did anyone get this one right) to take the round 7-6 for a well deserved win for the Elves with total of 53-38.The visitors stormed the beer leg to at least have something to cheer about.A grand evening was had by all.
Rammy Cricketers were keeping the river at bay this week with a free.

Week 18 Monday 15th Feb 2010
Well last weeks games did throw up a few surprise results and this week champions elect Radcliffe Cricket Club must be happy to have a week off to reflect and collect themselves together.
Close matches are predicted across the board again this week as the race for second place hots up.
Rose and Crown Rammy have the Stopes Tavern Elves climbing the hill this week, and Taylor’s tigers have taken a couple of defeats on the trot and although confidence is low this game could see them bounce back. Paul Gardner’s elves played well last week and there challenge for the runners up spot brings pressure to win all games, in a potential match of the week this one could be a draw but the tigers may just tough this one out by a point.........or maybe I’m talking pollacks.
Swan and Railway B have the Phoenix Knights Tour bus rolling in, with all cylinders firing or have they gone on holiday? With last weeks winning game against the league leaders still fresh in the mind,(the fixture was switched around due to half the team being away when the return is held). If all the travellers are available then this is another potential draw but the home side with the A’s tonic available mean the B’s may just be a point or two ahead at the finish.
Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook have the Sundial with Barney and the Harem visiting and after last weeks defeat against close rivals Packhorse, the hairy hounds need to win to keep up the runner's up challenge and may give the Harem a rough ride this week as they chase for that runners up place. The game will be a home win but Barney and the Harem will run them very close!
Packhorse Affetside have the Swan and Railway A flying in on a high after last weeks single point win, and with the hosts also winning last week, this one may prove to be the cracker of the week, and its going to be close but the home side may just have the edge by a point.
Final match is Rammy Cricket club visiting the Rose and Crown Starling, the hosts form is up and down at the moment, but they will still be out to avenge the defeat Rammy Cricketers inflicted on them a couple of weeks ago. However with a weeks rest the visitors may be raring to go and put themselves in pole position for league runners up spot in there debut season. An away win by a point or two only.
