PHIL'S COMMENTS

With questions again that caused a flood of complaints, the overall scores in two rounds this week in particular, reflect the problems caused. One Result has still to be received at the time of writing, and may delay publishing Heap Bridge Social Club against Shoulder of Mutton!
First report this week is the match at Stopes Tavern where Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook were the visitors, Host Captain Paul Gardner posted the result enthusiastically on the night. Yosemite Sam Reports:-
Last Monday of January saw the Hare and Hounds arrive at Stopes Tavern. Bernie’s Brother Roger the Bolt, volunteered himself as question master for the evening and the Hairy Hounds opted to go first, the Hairy Hounds dropped one question more than the Elves with both sides scoring a bonus and the round finished 7-5 to Stopes. Round two saw the Hairy Hounds gain some “Good Will Hunting” for a bonus to take the round 6-9. Round three was shared at seven apiece. Round Four saw the Hounds spring to a score of four, Andy Ainsworth thought Fame is the Spur was the final answer but couldn’t be absolutely certain so the Hounds stuck on four. The Elves crew guessed incorrectly on a tough second set of questions to finish the first half with a nil giving a half time score line of Stopes Tavern 20 Hare and Hounds 25.
Round five saw the Elves gain a bonus and the Hounds drop another question for the Elves to take the round 7-4 to reduce the deficit. Round six saw both teams play safe on some impossible first part questions, and both teams scored second part full houses for a round score of eight all... In a bonus less round seven, the birdman was the only Hairy Hound to get his question right, Stopes Tavern Elves had an eggplant and a Moliere to win the round 4-2 and level the scores at 39-39 going into the last round.
Round Eight, both teams scored on the first question, but then failed on their second; however the Elves picked up a bonus to give them the edge. Only one of the next four was answered correctly and the Elves had picked it thus taking the round 5-2and taking the match 44-41, the Hounds took the money on the beer leg. Match of the week.
Close contenders for match of the week was the visit of SunDial Walmersley Rd to Rose and Crown Ramsbottom. Helen’s Harem have shown a good run of form lately and this was no exception, however the home Taylor’s Tigers gave them a good fight but succumbed in the final round to a 42-44 scoreline.
St. Mary’s Radcliffe was host to the Radcliffe derby this week as the Cricket Club visited the OscAr’s. John Heenan reports that after two rounds the side were neck and neck but disastrous third round and an impossible fourth saw the Cricket club leap into a lead and show a clean pair of heels and couldn’t be caught, with the Cricketers running out winners 37-42 concluding the report from the St. Mary’s jury.
Ramsbottom Cricket Club hosted the PackHorse Affetside and the visitors have had a return to form whilst the hosts form has slipped, the visitors took the match with a 39-47 score.
Rose and Crown Starling hosted the St. Mary’s B’s, who elected to go first the first round saw both teams score full houses but the second individual saw the host pick all wrong to score just two with the visitors picking up two bonuses failing only on the Cats. Score 10-16. Round three had both teams score seven picking up bonus points on Moldova and Oasis respectively, 17-23. Round four stink or twist saw the visitors miss out with Scallion to zero the round and the hosts have the impossibly difficult one point question to stick on zero also, half time scores were therefore Rose 17 St. Mary’s B’s 23.
Round five had both teams score on the first and then the Rose picked up a bonus France on the second, the Rose dropped only the last political question of the round which wasn’t picked up to close the deficit slightly with a score of 7-6. Both teams played safe with impossible first part questions to score full houses on the second for eight all. Round Seven individuals saw the hosts again pick wrong to score just a two points with moliere, St. Mary’s B’s of Alec Fontaine, Enid Cathcart, Harry Wilkinson and Alan Clayton dropped that corresponding question only but picked up all the other points to win the round 2-9. The Final round saw the hosts hit back to win the round 8-4 with two bonus points but the match was won in the individual rounds by the excellent St. Mary’s B’s who are this weeks, team of the week and who also took the Beer money. With only Lee for the home side winning the tie break teaser. Final Score Rose and Crown Starling 42 St. Mary’s B’s 50.
Finally at the last moment I have received the final result this week from Heap Bridge Social club, it appears the Phoenix Knights may have suffered a Top Gear Mexican moment after a recent sortie to that part of the globe, (as it is the home teams captain that sends the score in win lose or draw). The Shoulder of Mutton were the opponents visiting the Phoenix nights and the home side were asleep under a blanket with a hole in the middle, it appears, as the Shoulder took charge and ran away with the match 24-49.
Quite a few Complaints from many different teams have been received again recently regarding the time taken to answer questions by quite a few of all the teams, no names no packdrill and due to this reason please can teams note that the question master can after sixty seconds maximum pass over the question, answer given or not and the passed over question can be disqualified after further fifeteen seconds if no answer is forthcoming. These rules are, as always are subject to the question masters discretion on the night taking into account background noise etc. Sorry for this announcement although the actual rules provide tighter timings, this is a reasonable time it is felt, to provide an answer and not spoil the night’s enjoyment. Please can home teams inform there question masters and announce the times at the start of the quiz night.
The teams that are yet to pay there subs for the year could they please provide payment to Margaret Chamberlain Rose Rammy at the earliest opportunity please.
A new league Secretary, web author and Bury Times reporter will be required next season could all interested parties put there name forward please.

Week 18 6-02-2011
A full fixture list this week ,with close competitive matches on the cards.
First match is the battle of the Roses at Rose and Crown Starling with Rose and Crown Ramsbottom visiting. The Rose Starling has not had the rub of the green with testing questions lately and Rose Rammy has also had faltering form so a close match is in prospect but the away team may just have the edge over the disheartened home side.
Heap Bridge Social Club host Ramsbottom Cricket club and both sides have had a poor time in terms of results this year, the hosts may just have the edge if they are at full strength but it will be close.
Stopes Tavern host St. Mary’s OscArs in the Radcliffe Derby and both teams have had an up and down time this year so far, the visitors have played well post Christmas whilst the Elves haven’t until last week, so a close match is in order. Potentially match of the week. Home win just or a tie even.
Radcliffe Cricket club has the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village visiting and if there is a potential upset it may come in this match as the visitors have hit a run of good confident form but any faltering and the champions will snap up the bonus points and run away with the match a home win just or a draw.
SunDial Walmersley Rd host Hare and Hounds, Helens Harem have hit a run of form whilst the Hairy Hounds have lost there form a close match here is in prospect and a draw will not be far away but a home win could be on the cards if form holds.
Final match is the visit of Packhorse Affetside to St. Mary’s B’s on last weeks scoring another close game is in prospect but the free scoring hosts have been climbing the table to be within striking distance of title honours and may just prove to strong for the visitors this time.
