PHIL'S COMMENTS

The quiz league had a new venue this week with the PackHorse Affetside being forced to move to The Royal Hotel, Tottington, after the sudden closure of the PackHorse.
The Royal is a venue which many have driven passed and haven’t realised or visited but it is a traditional venue with a good choice of refreshment and a very warm and welcoming atmosphere.
First match to report in was the match at Rose and Crown Ramsbottom who had the league leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club visiting and the leaders have had a slip up in form in recent weeks but they hit back with a bang this week, as the host Tiger’s could not hold a full onslaught by Phil Dodd’s men and went down to a 32-62 score.
Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village had the enigma Radcliffe’s St. Mary’s Social Club B’s visiting Stephen Greenhalgh reports:-
A blistering rnd five by the Killer B’s decided an otherwise tight game.
The Shoulder had led by three at the halfway point. However St. Mary’s went into overdrive taking round five by a score of 4-10 , and the cornered Wolves couldn’t fight there way back from there.Final Score 44-50.
The Beer leg was a twenty twenty tie with St. Mary’s B’s taking the tie break by less than ten years.
Third match to report in was the visit of Ramsbottom Cricket Club to Stopes Tavern with the hosts losing there traditional good form the visitors meanwhile have been quietly mounting an assault on the top of the table and if the leaders slip up and the Rammy Cricketers win there games in hand, the league will be very tight for top honours. The Hosts found the form of the Cricketers a little to warm this week as Paul Gardner reported “Bridesmaid again”, 41-48.
The fourth match this week SunDial Walmersley Rd had the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook visiting Yosemite Sam reports:-
Final Monday in January and the Hairy Hounds made there way in the dark to the SunDial but they had no idea of what time they arrived. Helen greeted us with her usual beaming friendly smile.
Minnie Mouse courageously coughed her way through the questions whilst being cacophonated by Derek and The Domino’s (and Layla would have struggled to hear). The Hairy Hounds opted to go first and flew into an early lead helped by airports that Yosemite had spent time in. Round one finished 4-9.
Round two saw a U.S. General bonus and a Game show max for the Dial, beat the Hounds Demi max and take the round 6-5.
Round three saw the Hairy Hounds sneak an extra bonus point whilst dropping a single question unanswered and take the round with a 6-7 win.
Stink round lived up to its name, with both teams scoring Not-A-Lot all, to give half time totals of SunDial 16 Hare and Hounds 21.
Round five flew by with both teams scoring well and it was a seven apiece tie.
Round six saw a full house on second parts from the Hairy Hounds, SunDial dropped two questions, which were snapped up for two bonus points by the Hounds for a round score of 4-10. Round seven was a little bit hard for the SunDial as Al Dente, was the only score in the round for the hosts, the Hairy Hounds snapped up the rest to take an unassailable lead with a round score of 2-11. The SunDial got the only unanswered question of round eight, which finished 6-8, giving a final result of SunDial 35 Hare and Hounds 57.
Beer leg went 17-21 to the Hounds and the tie break never got a mention, probably a cough to far! Final match took place at the new league venue of the Royal Hotel, Tottington who have kindly agreed to host the remaining home matches for the PackHorse team.
A warm welcome greeted the visiting Rose and Crown Starling to the Royal and the visitors decided to go first after both teams negotiated the first questions the Royal Horsemen then proceeded to drop the further answers of A Fine Romance, Ballabriggs and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. With only the final answer scoring bonus points to add to the visitors own full house, 2-9 was the round score. Round two individual round, had categories of U.S. Generals, TV Game Shows, European Landmarks and Dei Moore Films. US Generals Stilwell and Pershing saw no score. The Big Break headed the Royals way for a bonus, the landmarks saw both teams score and the Royals dropped Demi Moore which wasn’t Disclosed for a bonus point. Round Score 5-4, totals 7-13.
Round three saw just one question pass both of the teams by and that was the talk sport game Escalado is based on which actual sport. Round Score 6-8. Round four Stink or Twist on a theme of Sackcloth and Ashes, saw the visitors Rose soar to the heights of the second part only to crash and burn for a score of nil when the Haversack’s name origin wasn’t recognised. The Royal Horsemen galloped along the same path but the beauty of Helen of Troy was missed in favour of Dido, also for a score of nil. Halftime totals The Royal Horsemen 13 Rose and Crown 21.
Round five saw the Royals score their second round win of the evening missing just one question when Poirot out foxed them but picking up a bonus Gladiator Aircraft. With the Rose also dropped the Tobacco Peace Pipe however they did pick up the bonus detective for a round score of 7-5, for 20-26 totals. Round six two part round, saw the Royals drop three questions but score a bonus point with the only answer dropped by the visitors, the Gold Coast, Nitro-glycerine and Tex Ritter passed the Royals by and they scored with a bonus Montreal, the Rose picked up the explosive bonus for a round score of 3-7.
Round seven second individual round had categories of Place Names, Meteorology, Italian Phrases and Birds. The Royals won the round dropping only the Winds, which was snapped up for a bonus point by the Rose, however the Rose dropped two questions giving bonus points to the Royals with Stream and lightning. Round score 8-5 for totals of 31-38. Round eight final round saw the Royals drop the first and last when Wallachia’s host country and Beanie hat passed them by. With the Rose managing a full house the final score was Royal Horsemen 35 Rose and Crown Starling 46. Beer leg was taken by the Rose by just a point but the Tie break went to the Royals.

We the league have also been contacted by Sue Craft representing The Samaritans they are holding a much needed fund raising Supper and Quiz at Bury F.C. Social Club on Saturday 25th February , tickets are £8.00 per person and are available from Sue on 0161 7960235 after 6pm. The Bury Samaritans are mainly self funded and this function has helped them continue to operate this worthy charity.

Week 18 6-2-12
Week Eighteen may be subject to the weather conditions forecast if our aweful forecasters can get things right for once.
Match one see the Ramsbottom Cricket Club visit St. Mary’s B’s if the roads are passable this looks to be the weeks top match and could decide the league’s runners up spot. The match will go all the way if the B’s don’t implode and a draw won’t be far off. Home win.
Second match has the Hare and Hounds host Stopes Tavern a very good contest is on the cards with this match and the prediction is a home win but only just.
Third match has a Ramsbottom Derby, if they can reach the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village, with the predicted weather the Rose and Crown will be the visitors and this match could turn out to be electric both teams may not give any quarter and this could go all the way also, home win predicted.
Fourth match has Heap Bridge Social Club face the Royal Horsemen and if the Knights have recovered some form this will also be close but the Royals may just have the strength to overcome the hosts.
The Rose Starling are hosting the SunDial with the hosts perhaps having to field a weakened side with someone else having to play the SunDial may have the luck with them for the first time in a while, close but a home win.
Radcliffe Cricket Club are having a rest this week letting the rest of us try to catch up a little.
New Players are wanted to strengthen team squads, contact the league secretary.
A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side. Contact details along with the league tables are on the website at www.buryquizleague.co.uk
