PHIL'S COMMENTS

Just a few hours of torrential rain and snow showers to contend with for the travellers this week and the venues were again welcoming although team captains all report that the quiz was absolutely terrible for either one side or the other in each half.
First game again this week has the report from the Hare and Hounds, Holcombe Brook and our intrepid match report posted by Yosemite Sam.
Sun Dial Walmersley Rd journeyed through the wilds (Bass Lane) on route to the Hare & Hounds, to arrive mob handed (they'd managed to create a Gang of Four, apparently a rare event for them). Miriam was makin' a special appearance as Question Master while Jill was off doing her Winter Olympic bid. Hairy Hounds were hoping to break this season's Andy Ainsworth hoodoo of having lost every game in which he's not played. This was the first appearance this season of their second J.C. (John Connell), who also arrived via Bass Lane (ah, the wonders of Sat Nav). Sun Dial elected to go first. Hairy Hounds took first two rounds 7-4 & & 7-2, Sun Dial came back with a 5-1 in Round Three. Stink or Twist round lived up to its name with both teams blanking on 1st question. So The Hounds lead 15-11 at half time. Second half of quiz went the Hairy Hounds way to keep their hopes of mid-table mediocrity alive. Final score Hare and Hounds 46 Sun Dial 23.
Packhorse Affetside had the Swan and Railway A climbing the hill in the first half of a double header with the return match next week. With Sue learning lines at home and Simon away the Packhorse were there for the taking but the Swans just never got going without Mavis’s tonic and after a match to forget for them, the Packhorse ran away with a 43 -18 Point win, will the added zest of Mavis’s tonic make difference, time will tell.
Match of the week this week was the Swan and Railway B versus the Phoenix Knights of Heap Bridge Social Club with just a few points in it throughout the match the Swans just managed to clinch the game with a 42-37 win.
Stopes Tavern Elves cramponed up to the Rose Rammy this week, and with one eye on the runners up spot they are gathering momentum to take the honour, the Rose Rammy fought hard but the Elves are working very hard each week for a win and took the game with a 43-34 score, then enquired about the final match score at the Rose v Rammy Cricketers before the whistle had blown (was that TIM GREEN in charge of the score text this week?).
Final game was the first visit of Rammy Cricketers to the Rose and Crown Starling, the Rose was attempting to avenge the defeat of a couple of weeks ago. The Cricketers elected to go first and battle commenced. First couple of questions went without problems and then the Cricketers faltered on the Corrie Character and Rose couldn’t recall ITV Footballing Postman Adam Crozier’s name but they could describe him in detail. The Cricketers scored with St Kilda and the Rose failed to get Gavin Ring of Bright Water Maxwells surname. 5-7 for the round. Round 2 Individual saw the Cricketers get a full house and a bonus on the Cricket Question whilst the Rose failed with the obscure super group of C&W singers, as well as the Cricket team name. Falling further behind, with the scoreline of 9-16 was the Rose yet again. Round Three had the home team scoring on the first question only and answering most of the Cricketers Questions thereafter but none of there own as the questions appeared to be visciously biased with the degree of difficulty. The Cricketers dropped only the perfume question to pull further ahead and lead by eleven at 11-22. The aptly named by the hairy hound above, stink or twist round had the Cricketers stumped on the 1 point dog watch and the Rose managed to get dogface, then blew out the Great Dane for an incorrect Rottwieller. All zero’s on the round score remains 11-22. Freshair stick required urgently. Round five saw a complete turn around in fortune when the Rose scored a full house and a bonus Fourth estate whist the Cricketers scored first and last and forgot lethe (must be the beer).score 20-26. Round six, is the four or two pointers, Rose scored two then picked up a bonus Verwoerd. Scored with Al Martino and picked up the National Theatre but missed Sadat which the assassin and the Cricketers didn’t but they picked up the last two for two and the Rose after deliberating long enough to be warned by questionmaster Bob Selby, final getting Westminster Cathedral. Score 28-31. Round seven individual saw the Rose score a full house and pick bonuses of Dickens and Blunt. Whilst the Cricketers team of Chris Everett, Ben Dark, Ian Bell and Chris Woolfall blanked completely, for a scoreline of 38-31. Final round saw the first two for both side passed over with 2 bonus’s for the Cricketers and one for the Rose, final two answers went with the teams and the Rose team of Ann, Terry, Kieran and someone else, had avenged there defeat by 44-37.
Radcliffe Cricketers were biting Phil Dodd’s bullets this week in preperation to clinch the title.

Week 19 Monday 22nd Feb 2010 4 With last week’s games being as tough as they come, teams are hoping this week’s matches are a little more enjoyable and rewarding.
Swan and Railway B travel the short journey to Stopes Tavern for the Radcliffe Derby to be entertained by the Elves and in the potential match of the week they will have to be in top form to topple Paul Gardners Elves as recent form has put them in pole position for runners up spot, the Swans however have been quietly gaining strength over the last few games and could upset the applecart. A home win but only just!4 Heap Bridge Social club have the champions elect Radcliffe Cricket Club visiting and in a run of poor form, with last weeks rest to help, they may hope to steady the rocking boat and finally clinch the title but the phoenix knights are a team that could provide a problem for the Cricketers but they must be at full strength to have a chance. Away win as three in a row is unheard off but it could even come down to a draw!!!
In the Rammy Derby the Rammy Cricketers entertain the Rose and Crown and this one could also be match of the week, the Cricketers played well against Starling and lost out only finally in the last round and it may come down to that this week again but they maybe on the right side this time as taylor’s tigers may just run out of steam. Home win by just a point or so.
Swan and Railway A have the Packhorse sliding in, with a quick return fixture, if the Swan’s fly off to a quick start, an avenging win could be on the cards but if the Packhorse are at full strength then a double will be on the cards and maybe in the glass. Home win but could be closer than last week.
Final game is the visit of Barney and the Harem of the SunDial to Rose and Crown Starling with the Rose hitting a bit of form last week in the second half they will hope for the same all game but it depends on the rub of the green as they say. Barney and the girls could run them very close if the opposite happens. Home win but maybe very close.
Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook have the week off to train hard for the final few games on a diet of real ale.
