PHIL'S COMMENTS

Another wet winter week in the season and results this week have closed the league top places considerably.
First report this week is the Radcliffe Derby at Stopes Tavern where St. Mary’s OscAr’s were the visitors. A close contest followed reports John Heenan with St. Mary’s coming within five points of the Elves after the last individual, but the home Elves showed St. Mary’s a clean pair of heels in the final round scoring a full house and a bonus to win the match 47-39.
Heap Bridge Social Club hosted the Ramsbottom Cricket club and in a close contest the home sides poor run continued as the visiting Cricketers took a close match to improve there record by a score of 39-43.
Radcliffe Cricket Club had the Shoulder of Mutton visiting and in a close contest the league leaders and current champions had to draw on all there experience as the ever improving debutant Shoulder team gave scant regard to the hosts league history by losing out in the last round only to a score of 47-44. Match of the week.
St. Mary’s B’s had the PackHorse visiting and the visitors could not replicate last weeks winning form as the hosts increased the pressure on the top of the league by scoring well again in a 47-37 victory.
The Rose and Crown Starling was this weeks venue for the war of the Roses as Rose and Crown Ramsbottom visited and in a noisy night at the venue the hosts were made to go second in the first half by the Taylor’s Tigers team of Peter and Ian Taylor, Sue Booth and Margaret Chamberlain.
Round one saw only the Chilean miners digging in and foiling both teams for a score of six each. Round two individual saw both of the teams score on Greek Myths but the hosts dropped the Clint Eastwood films and the unbalanced Nobel Prizes neither of which was picked up by the Tigers. The final questions on Albums were both scored to give a full house for the Tigers, and to grab a four point lead at 10-14. Round three saw both teams score on the first two but the Rose St. missed the Cricketer which the Tiger’s pounced on for a bonus Amir. They then dropped the last and Nero couldn’t be fiddled for a host bonus for a round score of 6-7. Stink or twist round on a theme of Bishops, saw the Tigers trapped by Henry VIII to stick on four but the hosts got the dates wrong and become royalists by losing the English civil war to blank the round. Halftime scores Rose and Crown 16 Rose and Crown 23.
Round five saw the visitors pick up a bonus point with the writer Child and then lose a bonus point with there own writer Patterson (which the Rose St had answered for the first one also), the round score was seven each. Round six two parters saw the Tigers pick up a maximum first with John Le Mesurier whilst the hosts went for a safe two but then the hosts were shocked into action with the electric chair and Kenneth Williams to score maximums on the next two and only a borderline team dispute saw them miss Oosterhuis for another maximum when they went for a safe two. The Tigers went for safe two’s on all the rest to give a round score of 12-10 and overall scores of 35-40. Round seven second individual saw both teams tearing there hair out and given pins and needles and goose Bumps with wrong choices and only the medical questions were scored on by both teams. With the hosts five points adrift going into the last round, it didn’t help there cause when the first question was dropped and Jake Shears was picked up by the Tigers for a bonus with both teams scoring the next it was Ana Matronic who provided a bonus for the hosts who then also dropped the final Seattle question which wasn’t picked up, but the visiting Tigers only missed the one to take the round 5-7 and increase there winning lead for a final score of 42-49. The beer round was taken by hosts who only dropped two. A good victory for the Tiger’s and earns them team of the week.
The Final match this week saw the Hairy Hounds visit the SunDial Walmersly rd and Helens Harem. Yosemite Sam Reports:-
On a soggy Monday night the Hare and Hounds, full of anxiety, being on their worst losing streak of the season, arrived at the SunDial who coincidently were on there best ever winning streak. Eunice was doing her best Jeremy Paxman impression and got the game underway. The Hairy Hounds had elected to go first and despite the viagra, flopped in the first round, going down 5-4 to Helens Harem. Peter Maguire won the Nobel prize in round two helping the Hairy Hounds to a 3-8 round win. Round three also had the Hairy Hound picking up good points to increase the lead with a 4-7 round win. Round four , the stinking Bishop saw the hairy Hounds choke on Rat Pack Joey to give them a big fat zero, the Sun seeking Harem stuck on two to give a half time scoreline of SunDial 14 Hare and Hounds 19.
Round five saw both teams fail on there first questions only for the opposition to pick up bonuses, with each side scoring on the next three to give a round score of seven all. Round six the two parters saw the Harem miss two and max one, scoring six points whilst the Hairy Hounds axed two and picked up a bonus to score thirteen. Round seven saw “ Later in the Day “ making the difference with two stabs at beltway if only Tony had tried the same method with “ The Invisible Man” round score 2-4which gave the Hairy Hounds a lead of 29-43. Round eight saw the Hairy Hounds put together a full house and a bonus to take the round 4-9and give a final score of SunDial 33 Hare and Hounds 52.
SunDial had beaten two Rose and Crowns in the previous two weeks, the Hare and Hounds team were happy they had changed venue’s two years ago so they didn’t suffer the same fate (although apparently Helens Harem were missing Stuarts magic pen, which could have made all the difference). Hounds took the beer leg. Helen almost forgot to send the result on the night and said it was an “awful result” for the SunDial who had to employ a last minute stand in player as well as missing the lucky pen.
The two Ramsbottom Teams that are yet to pay there subs for the year could they please provide payment to Margaret Chamberlain Rose Rammy at the earliest opportunity please.
A new league Secretary, web author and Bury Times reporter will be required next season could all interested parties put there name forward please.

Week 19 14-02-2011
A full fixture list this week and perhaps the defining week of the league season with the ties on offer. Valentines day may not be sweet for a lot of teams.
First match has the Roses at Rose and Crown Starling visiting the Ramsbottom Cricket Club and it is a must win game for the visitors in respect of league honours, but recent form of both sides suggest a close contest and with questions being as they are the most important decision may be the choice of first or second. However the away team may just have the edge over the home side.
Heap Bridge Social Club visit St. Mary’s OscAr’s and another close match is on the cards but the home side have been playing well whilst the visitors have suffered a marked dip so a close match but the home team may just have the rub of the green in this one.
Stopes Tavern visit the Rose Ramsbottom and a potential match of the week, Tailors Tigers will be purring after last weeks victory and the Elves are happy after a good victory too, the match may well be won in the last round and the points will be very close even a draw is on the cards but the visitors may just squeeze it.
Shoulder of Mutton host St. Mary’s B’s and another tight match is in prospect with the match again possibly decided on the final question the visitors may just have the form to win this one but the shoulder will run them closer score wise than many teams.
PackHorse Affetside have the SunDial Walmersly Rd visiting and if the visiting Harem have the lucky pen handy and are at full strength then they may prove too strong for the hosts but the contest will again be tight and competitive.
Contest of the week is the top of the table clash between the Hare and Hounds and league leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club, the Cricketers were run very close last week and they will have to be on top form to beat the Hairy Hounds, as it is a must win contest for the hosts to have a chance of the title and in a close contest the Hounds may have the confidence to just take this one.
