PHIL'S COMMENTS

Week 19
The match of the week was tough to decide this week as predicted and runners-up spot was at stake. Firstly congratulations to the Radcliffe Cricket Club who have secured runners-up spot in their final league match of the season by winning a very close affair at Heap Bridge Social Club. Phil Dodd's men must have been sweating during the match as the Phoenix Nights former water rats ran them very close to lose by only one question. The final result was 47-49. Just edging it for match of the week though was the game at Rose and Crown Rammy where the challengers for the runners-up spot, form side Rose and Crown Bury were the visitors. After relishing the debating porn stars at Oxford question, Peter Taylor's Rose Rammy came up from 4 points behind to take the tie 41-37. Just missing out on match of the week also, was the visit of champions elect Rose and Crown Starling to the Swan and Railway B. Alec Fontaine had drafted in Alan Clayton to play alongside Enid Cathcart and Harry Wilkinson banishing the able Gordon Hubbert to the role of question-master for the night. The Swans took the lead in the first round and were never headed. Although the league champions came back to tie the game going into the final round, Kieran's knowledge of fern motifs could not pick up the N.Z. ladies rugby team and Bob Selby rued missing out on communist wives, but Phil Musgrove picked up the female star at Oxford as a bonus, strange that! With this match being repeated in the cup in a couple of weeks Phil said he'd have to redo the handicap which favours the Swans by a bandit eight points. The score 43-39. Final match this week was the Pack Horse Affetside hosting the Stopes Tavern. With the cup handicaps decided, cup holders Taverners have shown their true form by overwhelming Mike Pinder's Pack team 33-49. Sun Dial and Swan A had free weeks with Swan A winning 1-0 at an Old Trafford friendly. Week 20 Game of the week in this final week of the league season is the crucial decider for the wooden spoon, as such, between Pack Horse and Sun Dial. On recent form Barney's Sun Dial should be favourites but Sue Pinder will not want her team to finish bottom just a season after finishing runners-up. All to play for! With a 'what might have been' feel about it, Rose Bury visit the Phoenix Nights venue but with both teams playing well, this will be a very close match. Swan B host the derby match against the Taverners. In what could be a very tight match the resurgent Taverners will want to finish as high up the table as possible but Swan b will be on a high after beating the champions. This also could be a rehearsal of a cup quarter-final match? Final game is the visit of Swan A to Rose Rammy. Will Mavis's tonic have one last effect on the Swan A league season or will an in-form Rose side want to consolidate a fourth place finish. The latter will probably prevail but it could be close. The champions and runners-up have free weeks to prepare for short cup runs it appears. All team captains should have received the cup draw for rounds one and the quarter finals along with the handicaps. Volunteers to do a quiz, organise catering etc. for the presentation evening are sought. Plus we will be looking for contributions to a raffle on the night. |
