PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week 19 Mar 17th St Patrick’s day normally is a busy bustly affair but this weeks quiz just left everybody green and hung over by halftime it appears. All teams going first struggled with answers and all answers that were given, gave any opposition there equivalent answer in the round in effect, as well as handing over an simple bonus point. Match of the week goes to the game at Swan and Railway Radcliffe where the B’s were at home to the seasons finale for Rose and Crown Starling. In an extreme first round the hosts took a 9-1 lead which was increased to 16-3 in the individual round. Round three saw the league runners up burst into life and manage to scrape 6 points which was equalled by a strong B’s line up of Alec Fontaine, Harry Wilkinson, Enid Cathcart and Ann Marsh. The stick or twist round saw only one point added to the totals when the Rose Starling felt Westlife should have been the answer on the day but ended up feeling blue, score at the half 9-23. The second half saw the Rose pull back a point and then with Bob Selby and Kieran Goldsbrough excelling they scored 14 points to pull the Swans advantage back to just seven points after round six. The second individual’s saw the lead reduce to four going into the final round, with the home side scoring only two points to the visitors six after the legend Wally had finally woken, the final question of the quiz saw the Rose draw level for a final result of 40-40. Just pipped for match of the day was the contest at Heap Bridge Social Club where the new champions Radcliffe Cricket Club were having their final game of the season and in a close game the champions ended it on a winning note 39-43. With the third place in the league contested by four teams, the results above have given the winners of the final two games this week another chance of occupying that slot after both sides have slipped up recently. The Rose and Crown Bury had the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom visiting who have had some resurgence in form of late after slipping down the table, the Rose Rammy going second as there want, took the first three rounds and after both teams zeroing in round four, Rammy led by six at the half. Ian Openshaw’s Bury team sprang in life in the second half to score 31 points to Rammy’s 16 to close the match down with a win and final score of 42-33. Final game this week had the in form Stopes Tavern travelling up to the Pack Horse Affetside. Sue Pinder’s home side have had mixed fortunes recently but needed to win to stay in third place contention in a match that saw scoring difficult for both sides the home side managed to come out on top and keep the third place race open until the final league matches on March 31rst with a 40-32 point scoreline. Week 20 Monday March 31rst With the final league matches of the season this week, the third place spot is still to be decided. Match of the week for this week is the battle for the third place spot that could decide the destiny of that position with Heap Bridge Social Club hosting Rose and Crown Bury, this match is as close as the league positions and it will be that close at the end but the home side have been slightly more consistant this season than the visitors and may just have the edge on the match but it will be entertaining.. In the game at Swan and Railway the B’s have the in form side of Stopes Tavern visiting. The home side may slip up and out of the third spot race but the visiting Taverner’s will have to be on there guard as any drop in form and the B’s will be out of sight. A draw will not be a surprise but wont be the result for the home team. PackHorse Affetside host the SunDial and the visitors are fresh from a weeks rest and although having a very mixed season this year, the visitors may just spoil the party for the PackHorse third place hopes but once again any disputes against Barney and the girl’s and the Packhorse will run away with the match. Close result expected. Final league game this week is at Rose and Crown Rammy where the Swan A’s are fresh from a weeks rest with both teams having very good cup chances this will be a practise and a very entertaining match is expected, it would not be a surprise to see a draw as the resulte but a home win by maybe just a point is predicted. Rose Starling and the Cricketers are on a free week trying to come to terms with cup opposition’s bandit handicaps. Handicap Cup Draw. (Handicap points in brackets) Preliminary round. April 7 th A.
