PHIL'S COMMENTS
With last weeks health problems over hopefully. This week saw some very competitive matches and a league title deciding week.
Stopes Tavern journeyed through the swirling mists for what would surely be another very close game against the Pack Horse. With both sides enjoying a Topsy Turvy season, tonight’s encounter was too close to call!!!
The Tavener’s elected to go 1st & the initial momentum swung to the Pack Horse with a full house to Stopes 6 points, the lead was quickly reversed in the Individual Rd as the Pack Horse failed to score & Stopes crept ahead 11-8. The Pack Horse. were quick to strike back & registered 10 points in Rd 3 to turn a 3 point deficit into a 3 point lead. Rd 4 saw the honours even at 4 a piece & the Pack Horse took a narrow lead in to the 2nd half of the game.
With neither side capable of a consistent run of scoring the game continued to be nip & tuck & after 6 rounds the Pack Horse held the narrowest of leads at 38-40. With a collective groan resounding around the room following the announcement of the individual subjects, the Stopes lads were more than pleased with their 6 points, when they feared drawing a blank. Mike Pinder was probably just as pleased with his teams 4 points & the scores were now drawn at 44 a piece going into the final round.
In the closest of games the match would finally hinge on the very last question & Stopes deliberated long & hard on the name of a 7” long Game Bird, through a process of informed elimination!!??? Stopes finally plucked Quail out of the long list Stopes had compiled to run out very relieved 52-50 winners. And winners of game of the week .
A new derby match took place at the Hare and Hounds Holcombe where Rose and Crown Ramsbottom were the visitors. Peter Taylors cats are purring lately and would the Hairy Hounds make them take flight. Rose took an early lead in round one which was built on in the third and held until they were silenced by the Trappist monks in the stick or twist round for a blank, whilst the Hairy Hounds played safe, sticking for four not risking the Bachelor’s guess and it gave the home side a one point lead at the half. Rose promptly reversed this deficit in round five, but the Hounds barked again and took maximum plus a bonus on the four or two round six and then promptly zeroed on round seven with a wrong choice of individuals, and this resulted in the Hounds having a four point lead going into the final round. With the Hounds dropping two of the four lead in the last round things got nervous for the home side but they hung on for an excellent win and a close 45-43 point result. Just pipped for the game of the week.
The title leaders Rose and Crown Starling had a nervous and potentially big pitfall fixture visiting on-form Swan and Railway B’s who’s team of Harry Wilkinson, Enid Cathcart John Hill and Gordon Hubert had inflicted a heavy defeat on the visitors at this stage last year and where any result less than a win for the visitors would hand the title back to the Cricketers and it was in this tense situation that they took on the game. First round saw the home Swans increase the visitors trepidation by pulling out a 7 point to 4 lead and a disastrous individual round saw the champions elect fall further behind 12-7. Legend Wally had forgot his sonar equipment and nothing was on the screen. A third round full house and bonus levelled the score to ease the worries and a stick on 4 for both sides saw the half time score levelled at 20’s. With half time refreshments to ease the nerves the Rose took round five with a full house and bonus to go in front for the first time with the legend Wally now” tuned in” and Russian ice dance expert Kieran Goldsbrough back in the swing after his Siberian visit along with Anne Thompson the visitors started to score well. Four or two round saw the Rose score heavily with seventeen points against the home sides 10 to lead by ten points and a better second individual saw the lead stretch to fourteen and just a couple of points were required in the final round for the Rose to regain the title and so the final round went 6-7 to the Rose the title was decided. Well done Rose and Crown Starling League Champions again after a very hard fought season final score 45-60. Team of the week Rose and Crown Starling.
The Final match this week was the second place Radcliffe Cricket Club visiting the phoenix knights at there lair Heap Bridge Social Club. With the Cricketers hoping for a slip up by the Rose they had to win to keep up the pressure, the Phoenix lads have that potential to cause a slip up but on this occasion it seems as though Neville and the lads had gone on holiday as they succumbed to a heavy defeat 34-61. With results against them elsewhere the Cricketers have had to relinquish there grip on the league trophy for this year.
Swan and Railway A and SunDial were at the Oscars this week.
Feb 23rd week 19
The Final weeks fixtures in the league and third place table finish is up for grabs, Heap Bridge and Hare and Hounds, and Swan B and Stopes all have chances but in pole position is the Rose Rammy. Top match will probably be Swan b hosting the Stopes Tavern with the visitors back to form and the the home side playing well, this could be a cracker, on form away win just but a draw will not be a surprise.
Heap Bridge hosting the hairy hounds could be another good game with both wanting to finish on a high note but with the phoenix lads waning last week this is the hairy hounds for the taking. Away win just...
Rose Rammy have the Swan A’’s flying in and if there not careful they may be in for a surprise but the form book says home win maybe.
Final game is Packhorse hosting Barney’s harem, the SunDial. With the home side struggling this may NOT be as straight forward as it appears and Barney and the girls will want to end on a high. A draw may be on the cards but a home win just only just.
