PHIL'S COMMENTS
With temperatures plunging this week, all games had the shivers in the second half it appears for the sides going second. But a tactical switch by Barney had the Harem doing a sand dance at the end of the evening. Team of the Week - SUNDIAL WALMERSLEY RD. The Match of the week was at the Stopes Tavern where Swan and Railway Radcliffe B travelled the short journey for the Radcliffe Derby. Both sides battled and struggled for some answers throughout the match with the elves of Paul Gardner, Roger Bolt, Tim Green and Ian Brealey eventually creeping over the finishing line to take the match and probably end the rival chances of runners up spot for the Swan b’s team of Harry Wilkinson, John Hill, Enid Cathcart and Alan Clayton. Score 43-41. Contender for both match of the week and team of the week was the match at the Swan and Railway Radcliffe where the A’s played host to the PackHorse Affetside in a return match of last weeks fixture, which the Pack horse won at a gallop. In a match that the hosts did not win, John Heenan reports, a round, and were 15-23 down at the halfway mark, the Packhorse were frustrated in the second half as the Swan’s rallied round to overcome the visitors by 47-39 and ended the evening by doing a victory lap of honour around the bar and later lying on the floor doing the dying fly, Mavis’s Tonic has that effect. Heap Bridge Social club travelled to the Champions elect Radcliffe Cricket Club in a return fixture switched around from the web results list. With the Cricketers having a blip in form up to there break, they had to win one match to finally win the league this season. With a return to form Phil Dodd’s men overcome the visiting Phoenix Knights with a score of 56-32 to take the match and the title Congratulations to the Radcliffe Cricket Club this year’s league Champions, well done Phil and the lads. Final Monday game this week was the visit of Barney and the Harem of the SunDial Walmersly Rd to the Rose and Crown Starling, and in a tactical switch Barney elected to go second in the first half, which surprised everybody including the Harem, and it proved to be a master stroke. Round one had the SunDial take a 0-3 lead when picking up the Leeds Castle bonus but then they blanked the rest of the answers, was they decision correct, was the murmour. It left the Rose to score on the rest and pick up a bonus Ringo, missing the Mosquito Coast and French food. 7-3 round score and the lead to the Rose. Round two individuals had both sides expecting the worst and football fanatics quietly confident but the round went 6 each with both teams missing the Brazilian footballers. 13-9 score. Round three saw only the pink waistcoats of the Bank of England being missed by the SunDial and picked up by the Rose for a total score of 22-15. Round four this year known as the Stink or twist round had both teams flummoxed after the first question for just a point apiece and a halftime score of 23-16, similar to the Swan a’s score funnily enough. Second half, Round Five had both teams missing out on the Army Questions with the home side picking up a bonus Dragoon. The rest of the questions were all answered for a score of 30-22 and an increase in the lead for the home Rose side. The four or two round turned out to be the turning point in the match, the Rose scored just four points in total on the first and last questions, whilst Barney (Dave) O’Brien and the Harem of Helen Lee, Anne Nicolson, and Tony Webb scored two x four pointers, two x two pointers and they picked up two bonus points for a round score of 4-14 and a total of 34-36. Round seven individuals saw Terry drop the Spycatcher and the legend Wally miss Lisa Simpson and Anne pick up the bonus Archer’s Question as well as her own with Kieran scoring on the Victoria Crosses, the home side managed 5 points, but the SunDial had picked up the first three to score 6 and increase their lead to 39-42. Final round saw both sides score six missing the oxyntic defence (Chelsea play this formation this season) and Emily’s list for a final score and a well deserved win of 45-48 and team of the week for tactician Barney and the Harem. Nice sand dance as well. Final match this week is the Rammy derby which took place on Wednesday, hence the late report, between hosts Rammy Cricketers and the Rose and Crown. Peter Taylor Tiger’s will be happy with the awarded cup handicap and it seem’s to have galvanised them into true form, as the visit to and match against high flying Rammy Cricketers, who were chasing Runner’s up spot turned out to be close, but the tiger’s were just too good on the night and took the win with a 44-50 point score. Hairy Hounds had real ale for training refreshment this free week. Week 20 Monday 1st Mar 2010 Last week’s games were tough for visiting teams taking the traditional route of question choice it appears but one side did profit, to the Rose Starlings cost. Top match this week could be the first game when the battle of the Cricketers takes to the crease for the return match; the Rammy Cricketers visit the boundaries of the Radcliffe Ground. The Radcliffe Cricketers returned to form after a break and overwhelmed the phoenix knights to clinch the title but Rammy Cricketers are just gunning for runners up spot in there debut season but last weeks defeat did not help, and they need to keep winning to pressurise the elves. Rammy may just have the edge this week but the result could be very close and even a draw. Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook kept there eye in with a team quiz last week on there week off spies have told me, as they are also in the running for second place, but the Swan and Railway A are the visitors and with there tails up. The clincher might be the real ale, if the Swans have one or two many, they may fall down, and so a home win is the forecast but it will be close. Swan B entertains the Rose and Crown Rammy and after last weeks close game this one could go that way too for the home side. Cup favourites Taylor’s tigers burglar’s have stolen there excellent handicap so it may free them to run the Swan’s close. With an excellent win against the Rammy Cricketers last week, a draw is not out of the question in this one; however the Swans may just have the edge by a point. PackHorse Affetside have the Rose and Crown Starling donning the Crampons for the local derby and with both teams blowing hot and cold this will be close also. The visitors have an outside chance of runners up but there form has virtually ruled that out, a draw could be on the cards but the visitors may just and only just prevail. Final match is the SunDial who have the Stopes Tavern Elves visiting, and with the Elves trophy hunting the SunDial may find things tough, but if they play with the same conviction as last week, this will not be an easy game. Away win but closer than the Elves may expect. The Phoenix Knights are sharpening there swords this week on a free.
