PHIL'S COMMENTS

The daft day dreamed up by card manufacturers to increase trade mid winter heralded another week of loving competition in the quiz league.
We start off this week with the visit of Heap Bridge Social club to St. Mary’s Radcliffe Oscars. A contest of two distinctly contrasting halves reports John Heenan:-
In the first half of the match between St. Mary’s OscAr’s and Heap Bridge Social Club or as we know them as the Phoenix Knights, the hosts managed to put the wind up the Knights when St. Mary’s managed to jump to a 21-17 point lead at the half way point but however the second half saw the Phoenix Knights take the wind out of the St. Mary’s Sails by getting every answer correct and managing three bonus points also to run out winners 43-52, here endeth our lesson. Praise the lord!!!
Match of the week this week took place at the PackHorse Affettside who had the SunDial Walmersley Rd visiting and a close competitive match took place where both sides were in the lead at different times it went down to the last question on the night and the hosts managed to grab the two points required for a win with points totals of 47-45.
Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe village had the free scoring St. Mary’s Radcliffe B’s visiting and with both sides in good form a very tight match ensued but the visitors form is soaring to very consistent heights at this stage of proceedings and the Shoulder let the visitors slip away to a six point advantage and a 49-55 point result.
A potential title decider took place at Hare and Hounds where the visitors were leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club. Yosemite Sam Reports:-
Monday night’s clash of current leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club away at Not So Young Pretenders Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook was a game of just one half. Doddy’s men of the Cricket Club decided to go first and developed a 5-0 lead after the first four questions, the Hairy hounds then rallied slightly during the final four questions of round one to trail after the round by a score of 4-7.
Round two saw the Hairy Hounds get two unanswered questions, whilst Radcliffe Cricketers only unanswered question was picked up as a bonus by the Hairy Hounds but it still was advantage visitors as they took the round 5-6. Round three was probably the decisive round on the night as the Cricket Crew picked up a full house and two bonuses to easily take the round 2-11, a disastrous nine point difference. Round 4 stink round saw the Cricketers having to stick on one, the Hounds managed to reach four before sticking so some points recovered to give telling, as it turned out, half time totals of Hare and Hounds 15 Radcliffe Cricket Club 24.
Second half saw both teams hustle for points but the Hairy Hounds couldn’t recover the first half losses and both teams ended up scoring 31 points. So a final score of Hare and Hounds 46 Radcliffe Cricket Club 55.The Hairy Hounds bid for glory had hit black ice but the beer brewed by Titanic went down well and was an enjoyable consolation. The Hairy Hounds took the beer leg thanks to a Mosque Man muscling in on Cricketers Angie Bowie Replacement.
Rose and Crown Ramsbottom had the Stopes Tavern Elves visiting and Taylor’s Tigers kept up the form hit last week by not giving the Elves any leeway and took the match 47-38.
Final match to report on this week was at the Ramsbottom Cricket Club who had the Rose and Crown Starling visiting. The Visitors negotiated the line dancing keep fit club successfully without joining in and chose to go first. The first round started with what seems to be the weekly question on the Tour down under scoring for the visitors but the Cricketers missed the Bellow with barely a whisper and so did the visitors, however the visitors then missed Blue Murder but picked up a missed Odessa for a bonus then missing the Dunlevy question themselves with all other points scoring the round score was 4-5. Round two individuals saw visitors Bob Harvest the corn for the first questions on cereals but neither side picked up the Scottish officials on their own but visitors Lee picked up a bonus Lord Advocate. The defiant ones beat the Rose but the Vikings scored the only points of the round for the host Cricket Club, Anne had the Shingles for the visitors but missed catching Measles for a bonus. Round totals of 2-6 and totals of 6-11. Round Three saw both teams miss the first Australian Saint and the ICON answer but the Cricket Club picked up a bonus Cardinal Newman to limit the visitors to a 5-6 round score. Round four Stink or twist round on Marsh Fever saw the visitors stick on one point when Roderick Alleyne could not be recalled with the hosts also sticking on two and not risking glory with catching a bout of malaria, the halftime score was Ramsbottom Cricket Club 13 Rose and Crown 18.
Round five saw both teams score a full house to increase there totals, Round six the two parters saw only Gaitskell defy the hosts and be picked up for a bonus to give a round score of 6-9 and overall totals of 27-35.
Round eight saw the host team of Mick Everett, Ben Dark, Ian Bell, and Rod Hamer pick right in terms of Categories and score a full house they also picked up a bonus “go compare” (who have just saved the author three hundred pounds on car insurance incidentally), this won them there first round of the evening 9-6. Totals 36- 41.Round eight final round saw both teams score on the first two but crucially the Rose picked up mulberry for a bonus and then drop the final answer which wasn’t picked up for a final score of Ramsbottom Cricket Club 42 Rose and Crown Starling 48. The beer leg turned out to be a draw and the tie break having to be asked the question master Pete Spencer had to calculate the answer and the Cricket club took the money.
The two Ramsbottom Teams that are yet to pay there subs for the year could they please provide payment to Margaret Chamberlain Rose Rammy at the earliest opportunity please.
A new league Secretary, web author and Bury Times reporter will be required next season could all interested parties put there name forward please.

Week 20 14-02-2011
A full fixture list this week is the final one for four weeks, and some tough matches are again in prospect.
Stopes Tavern have the Ramsbottom Cricketers making their longest trek of the season and looking at the form guide the match will be very tight but the Cricketers seem to have lost confidence recently in there answers whilst the Elves may just be turning the corner form wise so a home win is on the cards but only by a few.
Rose and Crown Starling host St. Mary’s OscArs in a match that will be very tight for the hosts recent form suggests. St. Mary’s A’s have had some close games and haven’t closed matches out the Rose Starling may have stemmed the flow of losing matches last week but it may only be a temporary halt. Home win but only just.
Heap Bridge Social Club host Rose and Crown Ramsbottom both teams won last week but the Tigers are roaring at the moment and will the Phoenix Knights tame them …. Not quite just yet as the prediction is Tigers but it will be close.
SunDial Walmersley Rd host Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village in a match that could produce the match of the week. Helens Harem missed out by just a question last week while the Shoulder played well but just missed out but with a good score also. This will be close but the visitors may just have the edge this week.
Radcliffe Cricketer Club host the PackHorse Affetside, if the visitors were at top form consistently this match could be match of the week but the visitors have had an ebb and flow of a season whilst the league leaders have hit top form since the turn of the year, so a home win is predicted but it may be closer than expected…
Final match this week is the probable match of the week, when St. Mary’s Radcliffe B’s host the Hare and Hounds Holcombe brook with both teams flying high the hosts though have been scoring consistently heavily with the visitors slipping slightly so a home win is predicted but not by many and a draw is not far off either.
