PHIL'S COMMENTS
The quiz league had to do battle with a repeat set of questions this week but our valiant and brave teams managed to complete the fixtures, with only one tie failing to post a result. Our question setter had realised the mistake sent from his team of setters prior to the league sending a complaint and sent an apology immediately on Tuesday, and has supplied a replacement set of questions for the week if required, if any teams feel that the quiz was unfair this week and are both willing to replay the match at there own convenience then that is possible. Please contact the secretary with thoughts or comments.
First match to report in was the match at Heap Bridge Social Club which was due to be played at the SunDial Walmersley Rd, however Helen was informed at midday that the SunDial had closed down, so Helen arranged for the fixture to be played at Heap Bridge, with the hosts playing as the away side. The match turned out to be lucky for the Phoenix Knights also as it turned out to be there first consecutive win of the season which pleased the knights immensely, score 39-54.
The final home matches for the SunDial will be re-arranged if required, and it is with regret that the team will be unable to continue next season unless someone takes over the running of the team as Helen has other time commitments; however team members are available for other teams.
The second match to report in on the evening was the match at the Royal Hotel, who had the league leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club visiting, with the Cricketers having to win to stay favourites for the title, this could have been a possible slip up but the memory test proved to go just in there favour as they ran out 49-55 winners.
Third match was this weeks Rammy derby with Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook visiting Ramsbottom Cricket Club in the top match scheduled for the week however it turned out to be a little different as Yosemite Sam reports:-
This week shall be known as the week of the reversal. Unlucky for some, 13 is the reverse of 31. It would appear that the questions for the Hounds visit to Rammy Cricket Club were incredibly similar to those on the 31rst of October when Rammy Cricket Club visited the Hare and Hounds! After an egg sighting arrival, the start was delayed by a beer exchange for the complete Hairy Hounds team. The Hairy Hounds chose to go first, a reversal of the last encounter.
In round one it appears as there was the usual anomaly it appears of one team getting two questions the same, when the Hairy Hounds got two organisation questions and the Cricketers received two four letter words. When the round one was over Ramsbottom’s Runners had opened with a 10-4, to which the Hairy Hounds had received the message. Round two saw Darts, Country Seats and Elements re-appear, whilst Yorkshire Dales had replaced the four letter words previously used. Hairy Hounds Clawed back some points hitting a six meanwhile the Rammy Cricketers ran just a three.
Round three saw the Hairy Hounds strike a four and the Rammy C.C. made a seven. Fourth round stink round went 4-2 to Rammy Cricketers giving a half time score of Ramsbottom Cricket Club 24 Hare and Hounds16.
Round five saw the Cricket Clubber’s maintain their 50% lead by taking the round 9-6. Round six two part questions was drawn at a dozen apiece (although the egg front had the Hounds winning at two dozen to nil). Round seven confirmed that déjà vu that most had been feeling; when a cricketer stated that in the earlier game the little chappie with the dark beard had come up with the devilish answer. Unfortunately for the Hairy Hounds Andy Ainsworth was away sliding down a mountain on planks of wood and the devilishly slippery slope was left to Yosemite Sam who was missing from the first game, and when asked “what do you need to sup with the devil? Yosemite answered “a Dodgy pint of Thwaites Wainwright” (see delay at start of quiz). Round score 6 all. Totals 54-40.
Round eight went to the Cricketers by a score of 9-4 giving final totals of Ramsbottom Cricket Club 60 Hare and Hounds 44.
So again the reversal appears with Hare and Hounds getting the same score as the Cricketers previously with the same set of questions. Beer leg went to the tie break and was taken by the Cricket team.
Stopes Tavern hosted the Rose and Crown Starling who elected to go first with both teams realising that the questions in the first round had been used previously, Round one saw the hosts take the lead with a bonus Carpentier for a score of 9-6.
Round two individuals had the familiar categories of Darts, Country Seats, Elements and Yorkshire Dales, the scoring went equal until the elements Plumbago was dropped by the Elves and was snapped up by the Rose’s Kieran with the Yorkshire Dales proving to much for someone else from the Rose, the Elves snapped up the bonus point for a score of 7-7. Round three saw the questions become un familiar and the Elves dropped the first three questions, Arsenal manager prior to the present Arsene Wenger which the Rose grabbed as a bonus, the Rose then proceeded to drop the next two questions also, losing a bonus point with Iolanthe but picking up a bonus Ruddigore both final questions were answered giving a score of 6-3 and totals of 19-19.
Round four stink round with a theme of a proper Charlie, saw the Rose race to four point and stick when Charles 7th went back to France un-recognised, the Elves of Roger Bolt, Harry Bullough, Paul Gardner and Ian Brealey raced to two points then stuck when Smirk went un recognised. Halftime totals of Stopes Tavern 21 Rose and Crown 23.
Round five saw both teams achieve a full house and round six Two part questions had the Rose score a maximum full house and pick up a bonus single point for the only question dropped with Cubism. The Elves scored two maximums and a two point Algeria for ten points giving totals of 39-48.
Round seven had categories of English Seaside Develish Proverbs, Scottish Birds and Film Festivals. The Rose dropped two questions with the first for the Elves to grab Dorset and the Scottish birds which again both went begging. Round score 7-4, for totals of 46-52.
Final round saw the Rose drop the Westwind but then grab a bonus Skylark and Journey into Space along with Wilt Chamberlain but give away the Larry Bird bonus for a round score of 3-7 for final totals of Stopes Tavern 49 Rose and Crown 59.
The beer leg went to the Rose by a single point. Tim Green was the evening’s master of Ceremonies.
The remaining match of Rose and Crown Ramsbottom and St. Mary’s B Radcliffe failed to post a score after contacting the secretary about the questions.
The Shoulder of Mutton were resting this week.

We the league have also been contacted by Sue Craft representing The Samaritans they are holding a much needed fund raising Supper and Quiz at Bury F.C. Social Club on Saturday 25th February , tickets are £8.00 per person and are available from Sue on 0161 7960235 after 6pm. The Bury Samaritans are mainly self funded and this function has helped them continue to operate this worthy charity.

Week 20 20-2-12
Week Twenty will hopefully be original this time.
Match one see the St. Mary’s B’s host the Hare and Hounds in one of two top of the table clashes and the hosts may well be just to strong for the visitors but they will have to be wary as the Hounds may pack down well and force a draw.
Second match top is Ramsbottom Cricket Club visiting the Rose and Crown Starling with both teams appearing to play well at present this will be close and the Cricket Club may well keep there bid for honours on song and end the Rose’s outside chances. Away win but close.
Third match has Stopes Tavern visiting Heap Bridge, with the Knights on form this match could well be match of the week , both teams will not give an inch and a draw is not far off. Away win just…….. perhaps.
Fourth match has the SunDial visiting Radcliffe Cricket Club with Helen’s Harem not on form this on paper appears the league leaders match but Helen’s Harem have a way of hitting form and may surprise the leaders. Home win.
Shoulder of Mutton are hosting the Royal Horseman this week and in another close encounter on paper this may also be top match this week, the Horseman have hit a poor patch of overall match form but are scoring well and the Shoulder wolves may well be hungry after there rest week. Draw possibly of close away win!
Rose Rammy tigers are sharpening there claws this week ready for a cup run.
New Players are wanted to strengthen team squads, contact the league secretary.
A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side. Contact details along with the league tables are on the website at www.buryquizleague.co.uk
