PHIL'S COMMENTS
Last weeks opening games were very competative and this weeks games didn’t disappoint either. Our league newcomers are making an immediate impression, the Phoenix nights bounce back and Stopes Tavern think its Christmas.
Ramsbottom Cricket club hosted there first home fixture against league stalwarts Swan and Railway A’s and it seems Mavis’s tonic is not having the desired effect this year, as after a competative match in which the visitors scored heavily on the “Danny Boyle” question, not surprising as the Swan A contains most of the staff of the club which borders the pub car park but this was not enough and the home side ,Rammy Cricketers pulled away to win 47-42 and sit high in the table at this early stage of the season.
Swan and Railway B’s hosted the Radcliffe Cricket Club in the evenings derby match. After last week’s question slip up Phil Dodd’s men are showing good form and overcome the heavily tipped home side that couldn’t grab the lead on the night and probably looked on in astonishment as the question about the neighbours added to the disapointment. Another tip for a home win down the drain as the visitors took the honours 41-49.
Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook had the Pack Horse Affetside visiting on their match debut this season. Sue and the lads fought well but the home side seem to have form on their side again this year and took the match 49-40.
Rose and Crown Starling had the Phoenix knights from Heap Bridge Social Club visiting and this match was the match of the week.
Round one went to the hosts 9-4 and the visitors looked a little down but a draw in the individual round 7-7 seemed to lift the knight’s spirits and they took round three to trail by only two going into round four which both teams stuck on the oriental test. Halftime saw the home side of Kieran Goldsbrough, Bob Selby, Jayne Rowley and Lee Sawbridge clinging to a two point advantage 24-22. Round Five saw the visitors draw level on 28’s and level points scored in round six saw the atmosphere increase with the visitors of Neil Jones, Barrie Birch, Derek Lord and Steve Henry getting the bit between their teeth round seven individuals saw them take the lead by two when the home side had problems with rabbits and cats. Final round saw the visitors stroll further away for a deserved win of 44-49. For the second successive season the Phoenix lads beat the Rose at this stage.
Team of the week Phoenix Knights.
Final game had the Stopes Tavern entertaining the SunDial, with all matches being tight this week this was no exception until the later stages, Stopes winning the night with a score of 41-34.
Week 3 Monday 12th OCT
Swan A Host the Radcliffe derby this week and they have a surprising early season form team Stopes Tavern visiting, if all the questions were on local knowledge as were last weeks they may have a chance but on current form the visitors will take it.
The match of the week will be at Radcliffe Cricket club where the visitors are Rose Starling and in the clash of last seasons runners up and champions the early season form guide say’s the hosts will take it as they have overcome a tough set of opening fixture with quiet aplomb, whilst the champions slipped up easily last week. Home win but it will be close.
SunDial have the Hairy Hounds bounding in and may spring a few suprises for the visitors if they choose the right answers from the suggested list but Ian Openshaw has his team operating well on the real ale diet and will prove just a little too frothy for the home side. Away win but closer than expected.
The Phoenix knights have the Rose Rammy visiting and on last weeks form they would win but with three quarters on the team in Spain for sun, sea, sangria and bankrupcy from the exchange rate this will be very tough and Rose Rammy may score there first win but the knights will fight every scrap of the way and a draw may even be on the cards.
Final Game is PackHorse hosting the in form newcomers Rammy Cricketers with form on there side the Cricketers could consolidate there league position but Sue will have had the lads in training this week and I am thinking a home win but only by the smallest of margins.
Swan b are on the chaise lounge this week.
A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side. Contact details along with the league tables are on this website
