PHIL'S COMMENTS
This week saw the weather changing to autumn proper and the closest set of matches in league history probably, team of the week is shared and match of the week goes to the question setters Century 21 who provided the most intriguing and excellent set of questions, our own match at the Rose, threw up very little in the way of bonus’s, and from the scores other matches were the same.
First match this week was at the Heap Bridge Social Club where the knights hosted last week’s top scorers St. Mary’s B’s. On paper, an away win was suggested, but the hosts played well and top scored on the night themselves. In what was a veritable thrashing on the night compared to the rest of the scores, the Knights won by a 4 point margin and a 48-44 result.
Newcomers Shoulder of Mutton, Holcombe visited the Elves at Stopes Tavern and again fought like lions to run the hosts close and losing in the final round by just two points 39-37, the newcomers will be sending shivers to any opponents on this form.
First of the weeks team of the week shared award goes to the victors of the clash at Ramsbottom Cricket Club who had the SunDial Walmersly Rd with Barney and the Harem riding in. The hosts had run the champions close last week and on that form alone the SunDial could have been looking at a difficult evening but they had also won their match in the first week and look as though the harem have had a diet of Britannica during the close season. No quarter was given and the SunDial managed to grab the win in the last round by a point to earn a well deserved share of team of the week, with a score of 34-35.
It was also a final round win at St Mary’s Radcliffe, where the PackHorse Affetside were the visitors against the oscAr’s. The lead changed hands four times throughout the close contest, but in the end the visitors, with recent “Come Dine With Me” contestant James cooking on gas, came out winners. Final score 33-40.
Second part of the team of the weeks shared award goes to The Rose and Crown Ramsbottom, Taylor’s Tigers reporter Margaret said the match could have gone either way and it went down to the final answer in the last round to overcome current league champions and visitors Radcliffe Cricket Club by a single point in another excellent match 45-44.
Final match this week was the visit of Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook to Rose and Crown Starling. In a predicted close match the lead changed hands just once, and that was in the final round. The visiting team of Yosemite Sam, the Great Caruso, Robert Stroud, and Dick Dastardly elected to go first and completed a full house with the home team failing to score with just the safari browser. 6-8 round score. First individual round saw the F.A. Premiership, Mr, Men and Double Acts all score for both teams but the more intellectual biblical fathers came up blank for both, six each 12-14 score.
Round three had the scoring appear as an exact mirror image for both the teams the home side failing on the first three, as answers were required on the terebinth tree product, chemical elements greater than atomic number 92, and cock robin’s bell toller, with the Hairy Hounds failing just on the elements known as lanthanides other name. Round score 2-6, 14-20. Stick or twist saw the Hairy Hounds play safe and stick on two not chancing Guyana for Jonestown. The home side went to four and stuck on the football question. First winning round for the Rose side 4-2, for a half time score of 18-22, no bonus points were scored in the half.
Round Five saw the Rose Team of Kieran, Bob , Lee and Someone else start well by picking up the first two questions and score the first bonus point of the match with Yorktown, and just like buses the Hairy hounds immediately picked up a bonus Caster Oil plant after both teams missed the nux vomica plant’s seed product. The Hounds then scored on their final two questions and the Rose picked up the last for a round score of 7-5, the rose had pegged back the lead to just two 25-27.
The two parters saw the Rose play safe throughout for eight whilst the Hairy’s dropped A. Trollope which although thought of wasn’t picked up, scores were now level at 33 each. Round seven individuals had both teams drop reality T.V. but the Rosy Lee did pick up the lovely Cat Deeley. The Rose sharpened its teeth on cuttlefish but both teams dyed on Cochineal. Respiratory System had both teams breathing easy but the Rose didn’t fly over the Cuckoo’s nest which the Hairy’s snapped up and further scored with the “Two Jakes” to level the round score and enter the final round at 38 each.
Final round saw the home team immediately drop the Shakespeare comedy in which Christopher Sly appears and the Hairies, crucially as it turned out, missed the bonus. Teams then correctly answered the next four questions but then the return Shakespeare of “The Murder of Gonzago” is the correct title of a play within a play in which tragedy, trapped the Hairy Hounds and the home team snapped up the crucial bonus, both teams scored the final questions, for a final score of 45-44 in favour of the home Rose side. Match of the week any other week, except this one!
View from Yosemite Sam: -
Week two and a packed Car park welcomed the arrival of the Hare and Hounds (well at least those who didn’t have to walk across the road) at Starling’s Rose and Crown. Lee, Kieran, Bob and someone else lined up against Dick, Robert, Caruso and Robinson (no, not Anne Robinson). In a bonus less first half the Hairy Hounds finished with a four point first half lead after playing safe and not guessing Guyana. By round six the odds were even and remained so at the end of round seven. Lack of a Shakespearian actor in the team cost the Hounds dear in round eight. Starling picked up the bonus on the penultimate question and so became victors 45-44. The Hounds full housed on 23 in the beer leg compared to the Roses 19. The 10p a go tie break wasn’t won by the Great Caruso but it was claimed by Robinson (well it was his biography).
The league tables make fascinating reading this week, especially if you’re dialled in.

Week 3 4-10-2010
Just four games this week in the fixture list but with recent results in mind there could still be a few shocks! The three early leaders in the league are all playing in difficult games. Match one has the Phoenix Knights visiting Rose Starling and with a full squad, the knights have proven there swords are sharp, this will be close and a draw is not out of the question but a little bit of controversy - an away win, just.
Radcliffe Cricketers host the Sun Dial and Barney and the Harem with two wins under their belt, the Harem will be a much harder prospect than previous encounters suggest and Phil Dodd’s men will have to play well but it will be a home win, though the harem will run them close, if they play with deserved confidence.
St Mary’s oscAr’s host the Rose Rammy. Taylor’s Tigers will be purring nicely after last weeks win over the champions but they could come unstuck against an OscAr side that have yet to sparkle. Away win, but it will be very close and a draw is a distinct possibility.
Final match this week is the PackHorse Affetside against league newcomers Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe, in another controversial prediction, this one maybe an away victory. But Sue has the lads on top form, so it will be very close but still an away win –just!
Rammy Cricketers, Stopes Elves, Hairy Hounds and St Mary’s B’s are all on a free night and are in training.
A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side
